Anyone else be part of an Orchestra for a musical? What does your list consist of?

Some of mine include:

The Secret Garden
South Pacific
Les Miserables
Joseph and the Amazing technicolor Dream Coat
and yet more to come...

Huzzah for Into the Woods.

There were no violas, so I spent almost 7 weeks putting in 150 pages of viola music, transposing it on Sibelius, and printing it out so that we (the two bass clarinets) could play it.

I didin't really like Pit. So. I now work with the pretty soundboard and sound equipment in the soundbooth. ^.^

So far, I've done You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Once Upon a Mattress. For YaGMCB, we didn't even use strings or transpose parts (Our school's orchestra is like listening to piccolos tune. And that's a nice assessment.) For OuaM, I got stuck right in the middle of strings. I went home practically in the fetal position after rehearsal.

I want to do more musicals though. biggrin

That sounds like our orchestra.
We HAD a few really, really good people-- but most of them quit because our orchestra (because it was awful) and now play in the youth orchestra through the university.

This in my first year in a pit orchestra. We're doing How to be Successful in Business Without Really Trying.

Our orchestra is really small... for whatever reason, there's only four violins, which seems like too few, my mom (who used to play violin) said that you always had a bunch of violins in a symphonic orchestra. And I know there was a couple more people who wanted to do it that the BD simply didn't pick, but we could use more...

Good luck with that. smile I have a recording of it. Good musical. biggrin

Symphonic orchestra and musical orchestras work a lot different. Since you're trying to often fit everyone + instruments and stands in a fairly small area (both times I did musicals, we were on the floor between the stage and the audience because our auditorium doesn't have a pit. We had to work with like, 4 feet of space between the stage and the audience), you can't exactly have a full size orchestra, even in the best of conditions. Often times, there will only be one or two people on a part. Take the minimum of what you need, and that's it.

How is You're a Good Man Charlie Brown? I think that's the next musical that I'll be in with my group. WOW! 150 pages for transpositions! That's crazy! The most I've ever had to do was maybe 8....

Depends, I'm in it this year, but wasn't the year before. I know all the one that have been done since my brother's second semester freshmen year though. He's a senior now. We're doing Beauty and the Beast this year I think.
