i recently saw a short extract of a TKD practisinng with a fan,
is this common in korean arts? i always thought it was a chinese thing, then again i was never interested much in it.
does anyone have information on the use of it or history?

Yes I believe that it is in several Korean arts. I know that the fan is in Kuk-Sool-Won. although today is not so popular as the staff or sword. however I dont really know vrey much past the fact that in Kuk-Sool-Won it originated from the Royal court branch.
(Note: KSW has three main roots: The Royal Court, The Tribal, and The Bhuddist martial arts)

It's not so much common in TKD (unless they're exagerating for demo purposes as such) but more so in Korea's more "folk" or so called "traditional" arts. Kuk Sool Won is one such korean art that claims inspiration from Korea's "ancient martial arts" and it is the most "chinese" looking of all korean arts. You have to realize that because of the history and geography of Korea, that Korea's societal and religious culture (while always proud of their individualism) were heavily influenced by China during the dynastic eras. As such, it is likely that the fan was a common accessory or royalty just as they were in China.
