Hey Everyone, I have been playing guitar for about 2 years, I sound out alot of the stuff I know, but I am having alot of trouble with my actual guitar playing. Does anyone have any tips that helped them with their speed and finger strength when they were starting out and still helps them? thanks, you guys rock!

Play for any selected amount of time each day of the week, say, 1/2 hour each day (I'm sure you can spare more than that, but a half hour is quite acheivable). Then for each week, pick a goal to work toward. If you want to be able to play the Ionian Major scale at 150 bpm using sixteenth notes then you work toward that. If you achieve your goal before your week is up, then just keep working beyond your goal. ie: 160 bpm.
The biggest key to practice is USE A METRONOME! I can't stress how vital it is that EVERY musician practice to a metronome, whether you're a drummer, guitar player, keyboardist, vocalist... it all doesn't matter so long as your timing is down.
I hope that helps a bit.... xd

Demonic Roman thanks alot guys, and lol for ash thanks alot for that one (no im serious) and what exactly is a metronome, i know what it does, and how much does it cost???? It's been a while since I bought one, but you can probably get one that works well for pretty cheap, and you can take it with you at all times. the other option is www.metronomeonline.com . This site offers a simple metronome to work off of if you're sitting in front of your computer while you play guitar.

Yes, metronomes/drummers/drum machines are very important when learning. My playing has gotten alot better since I got a G-Dec amp since it has a built in drum machine.

Basically practice EVERYTHING YOU KNOW! surprised
Do finger excercises a couple of times to a metronome... start off slow and build your way up... DON'T FORGET TO ALTERNATE PICK!
Make sure you really DO have all your songs down... if you don't, don't feel pressured playing a song fast. Slow it down till you get it then you can speed up and eventually play at the speed you want to play at.(I knew this when I first started but never really did it till someone told me to)

Heya, what always helps me alot is talking to fellow musicians and playing in a friendly socialble enviroment with them. I'm in a Music Group/Band at school where all the musicians of the school come together to play music. I often watch the other guitarists who are better than me and I ask them lots of questions. They teach me songs and show me new chords I don't know. I also have a clear file with all my chords in them so I can quick reference them when I need to. Going to lessons with a kick a** teacher also helps. Check guitar forums too they give you plenty of help. Um... I can't think of anything else, 'cept practice. Someone once told me that it's not the quantity of pracatice you pack in each day, it's the quality of the practice you pack in that really counts.

As far as stretching goes, I sometimes do this exercise with my fingers where I use my other hand to stretch out the space between my fingers. Then my finger flexibility is close to twice the flexibility of before!
