Hello! I'm looking for good video editing software. Stuff that isn't stupid.. If anyone knows some nice programs for Windows, it'd be great if you could tell me. I'm trying to find a replacement for the Ulead Videostudio I have now..but the other program I have scares me..so i don't really like using that. I think I'm basically looking for a windows equivalent of Imovie..
Now..why did I put this here..well, it's the most active of the guilds I'm in, I didn't want to just shove it in the normal forums..
So far.. Sony Vegas Movie Studio 7 has caught my attention.
Personally, I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the Vegas Movie Studio+DVD Platinum Edition 7 and the Vegas+DVD Production Suite. I think it's just the Suite has other things with it too.. Looking at the difference in price though, and a comparison between the two, it seems it's not just that..
Considering I might be able to get this at the 'academic price', the platinum would cost $159.00 and the suite $544.00. Australian prices, of course. Which means I may have to wait a while before I get it..or just keep using free trials.. whee
So..if anyone can help, I'd be grateful. Beyond that..I don't really care what this thread turns into..even a debate over PC and Mac...a war between apples and oranges..turnips and lettuce..(note that I chose things other than potato, carrot, peanut..uh..what else..)

Unfortunately, I can't help. The only video editing software I ever used was windows movie maker. Sure, it majorly sucks, but it's also free...

Movie maker is the stupidest thing I've come across..I tried to put music under a clip and it wouldn't even play properly after that..
Anyway, forget all this..I ended up giving in and using the program I was scared of. It's..okay, but it's very...well, professional, I suppose. And still scary..and takes a lot more work to figure out what everything does..and I don't like the way you have to cut things..it's a little more finicky..

Final Cut Pro is an industry standard...... Because the film industry is full of idiots who don't realize the total awesomeness of Sony Vegas.
I've used both. I'm fully trained in both. I hate Final Cut with a passion.
You see, you might realize when you are cutting a scene "Oh, marshmallows, I need to fix that Audio." Vegas is built to edit audio just as well as it does video. Plus, you don't have to wait giraffe-loads of time for monkey brains to finally render out (though that's a problem with the computers I've used... But Vegas is more user friendly then any system out there besides Movie Maker, which blows bubblegum).
I edit every short film I make on Vegas. It's fast, and cheaper, especially for a sound guy like me.
Mod. Edit: Bad language leads to brain disease.

Have you used Adobe Premiere Pro? I'd like to know what people think about that one..
It seems to me almost everything I do seems to be pointing me towards getting a mac. I was reading a book for goodness sake, and one of the characters switched from windows to mac..I opened a catalogue for some place and it had a full page of macs just staring at me..

Premiere is like the middle ground between Windows Movie Maker and Real editing programs.
Please, at least give Vegas a good try. It's the best program out there.

I'm giving it a try. I'm just asking about the other stuff out there as well and giving them a try too. Honestly, I'm just asking an opinion. Everything I've seen seems to say Premiere is better, in any case. It'd probably be more what I'm used to, in any case.
Besides, Vegas will be harder for me to get than any of the others. Beside a mac. Although they've got it at school, I'm sure. But so far, I don't really like it. Much. I mean..it's okay..

Movie Maker is so not user friendly. Movie maker is stupid. Imovie is user friendly. For some reason I have 'Unfaithful' in my head..

Ahem... As if I would do such a thing...
On the video editing debate, I use iMovie. It doesn't do everything that a professional would want by any stretch of the imagination, but it is easy to use, you can cut and move clips and sounds dead easy, it looks good and the new version has a fair range of effects.
My only major issue with it is exporting stuff from it. All the options it has either look terrible or the file sizes are too big.
I realise this only helps if you have a Mac... but still...
Oh, I do know a girl who does fantastic videos in RealPlayer format so I assume she uses the RealPlayer editor thing (whatever that's called) and it seems to work well and the quality is excellent. So maybe that might be an option.

So maybe that might be an option. Well, you happened to turn up at the right time.. rofl Yeah..Imovie is my preference at the moment. I do hope we're still in the mac lab for multimedia..but we're using stop motion pro at some point this year..so..that's in the other lab.. If we're still in the mac lab though, and they haven't updated Imovie to HD..I think I'll just go and update it on my computer and Timelady's. The new version gets rid of the tiny preview screen for effects! That thing hurt your eyes after awhile..and you can move both ends of the lightning.. There's a real player one? Well..it's not really going to help me..I don't even have realplayer. razz What do you mean by 'it's on now', Newski? smile
