I posted this in the Tech Forum but sometimes it takes a while to get an answer there and some of you know a lot about computers, so I wanted to see if someone here could help me out with this. Insomnesiac My old computer has been running slow for a long time and I could never find any viruses or spyware on it after running Norton, TrendMicro, SpySweeper, Lavasoft AdAware many times. I looked in Add and Remove programs, didn't find any strange programs. I tried everything possible that I knew how to do. I took it into Best Buy to get it repaired for an unrelated issue but asked them to run a system check on it. They ended up finding spyware and said that was the reason my system was soo slow and that if I already tried everything the only thing left is to restore the system. So I tried doing that. All I have in terms of recovery CD's are Driver Recovery, Application Recovery, and OS recovery. I tried the Driver Recovery one twice but I've noticed that all it does is restore the original software. I have no idea how to restore its system to it's original settings. What I need to know is, how do I get this laptop back to it's original settings so I can go ahead and reinstall everything? It's a Compaq Presario R3000, runs Windows XP, and is over 2 years old. Thanks. ^^ I already got a new computer but the only reason I'm bothering is because my dad said he wanted it. -_-;; So how do I reformat/restore a computer to its original settigns? Thanks guys. Note: If you're going to say something like 'Tell your dad to buy his own computer" or "Get a Mac" those are NOT options and don't bother if that's the only thing you're going to say.

~<3 As much as I feel like doing that it's not an option. ...It's old so I really wouldn't get any insurance on it anyway. >_>;; It doesn't help that all people are saying is "Follow the spyware sticky to the letter" I already tried all that crap. ><

Enter at... ...Your Own Risk Ok first off I would like to point out that I am 99% sure Bestbuy has a a "tell them it's spyware"policy so they don't have to fix things for free. my lovely laptop here has had a crap load of problems and have taken it into Bestbuy and everytime it was spyware except the last time where my hard drive crashed and I took it in the guy started to say "It must be the spyware...I mean a hardware problem. ******** for your problem ummm I think there is software out there that will wipe your computer so you can reinstall everything but this software isn't cheap.

In my opinion, Best Buy is the worst place to go for anything. Their customer service is horrible. Hmm.. I'd reset the computer by reformatting the harddrive, reinstalling your OS, then installing the important programs. That's what I did every time my old computer died. Hopefully I'll keep this one in good shape so that won't happen. My old computer's been reset about 4 times. XD;

My labtop is gona be 3 in september! -snugs it- And its still faster then most of my friends. and its a compaq Presario 2500 i think. -snugs it- I just wish it was built alittle harder, so it dident die every time I droped it. Do you still have the origional manual? I could find mine if you don't but the best thing is to go online and go talk to a teckonal profesional or to call in and they will walk you through the process. <3

@Alain: Yes this laptop's system malfunctioned. -_-; (Normally I'd laugh but computer stuff is making me scream right now. All the tutorials I'm finding are too technical. x_x
@Peles: If there wasn't one more year of warrenty on this thing I would have taken it to another shop. But I've looked into that software. Some of the prices. @_@ I wish I had money.
@Shoy: Is there a "Reformatting for Dummies" guide or anything like that around. Does using the windows XP disk that came with the computer wipe out all the softwarebecause if it does it would be great on this computer.
@Sin: Closest thing I have is a start up guide and windows manual that explains nothing. I'm trying to get some help from them now. Long wait times suck. -_-;

Well what I did first was when I bought it I copied everything to a disk and onto the harddrive's thingy.
So if something like that happens all I need to do it put the thingys not on the original disk to another disk and then erase everything.
Then re-do the whole thing and upload the other stuff from the other disk.
I know this only helps after you ge it fixed (via COMPUSA) or by buying a new computer harddrive thingy.

Techical support said they wouldn't help me unless I bought an extended warrenty from them. Hahahaha no, no more money on this old thing.
I wanted to keep this as a back up but my dad claimed it so it's his now. I'm going to put in the Operating System CD and hope for the best.
I only got a day left before my break is over, I don't want to waste any more time today on this thing. And it was a good computer before it got all f-ed up. :" (

This is actually my second Compac. It's not the computer itself. Any computer can get crap in their hard drive. This thing ran like new after my last hard drive got fried.
But my newer lappy is a Toshiba so xp
--------
It won't let me install the old OS unless I delete the old one and I can't figure how to do that either. ><;;;;

Step 1: Give Ezzy a cookie. Step 2: Get a stick of dynamite. Step 3: Put hole in modem. Step 4: Insert dynamite into hole. Step 5: Light dynamite stick. Step 6: RUN! Step 7: Get a new computer. Step 8: Give Ezzy another cookie.
Ta-da! Problem solved!
No, seriously? o.o I have no idea. Good luck, though!

Good luck, though! *gives cookie anyway* I wish it was that easy to solve this problem, anvils on the computer would be good too. ^^ If doing a new instillation of Windows XP Pro won't override the old files then I'm out of ideas. Add and Remove programs didn't even have an option to remove windows. T-T If this doesn't work, it's my dads problem. If he wants the computer so much he can have it and deal with fixing it. He needs to stop asking me about every computer problem. ><;;;

Reinstalling an OS should. How to delete the old OS I have no clue how. I'll ask my dad at dinner. :3 He's the one who's done it for me before. XD
