I've always spelt it theatre. I only use theater when I'm reffering to the band Dream Theater (cause that's how they spell their theatre). I said theatre too many times eek

I always use theatre...but then again, I have always spelled pretty much everything that British way for whatever reason. I'll use "theater" sometimes in reference to a movie theater (and yet I just used theatre there XD) or such.

When I was younger I always spelled it 'theater'. But I eventually learned that 'theatre' is the grammatically correct spelling. But to each his/her own I say.

I don't much care one way or the other. I mean, I usually spell it theater, but I'm not gonna bite anyone's head off for spelling it theatre. And it all sounds the same when you're speaking, anyway.

I didn't want to mention it before, but I do consider it more British to spell it 'theatre.'

sprite_of_the_shadows Someone once told me the two different spellings actually have different meanings one is just the building and the other refers to everything involved the people, the building, and everything together. Though, I can't remember now which was which... I have a feeling T-H-E-A-T-R-E is the whole experiance and T-H-E-A-T-E-R is the building.

From everything I have found out for various writing purposes, the spellings have no real different meaning, and as long as you are consistant either is fine. Although many people do use theater for the building. Theater is one of those words that was changed from the English spelling theater in the 1830s to purify American English of British spellings and seperate us from them. However, the American theatre/theater was still mostly made up of British actors, etc, at the time, so the word "theatre" sort of stuck.

I've always spelled it theatre, but I've been told that that's weird and british. Even by other theatre majors. But I can see I'm not the only one who spells it that way, so I'm not too worried. Especially since so many of you agree! rofl

I always spell it theatre. But that's not American, I'm told, it's British. Hey, it's spelt (another British spelling) that way on the Playbills, isn't it? Then, it's fine.
