This spectacle was just one of many we witnessed in the course of a 13-month study of the Spanish yellow, or common, scorpion Buthus occitanus, one of four indigenous scorpion species in the Iberian peninsula.

We soon found that the animals hide under large, flat stones, where they wait at the entrance to their burrows. They're skilled excavators, carving out their living quarters with their legs, and using their tails to remove the earth. Each animal has its own burrow, to which it returns after its nocturnal wanderings.

Scorpions are totally carnivorous, and they employ two hunting methods. The first is the ambush, standing guard at their burrow entrance, claws at the ready, waiting to take passing animals by surprise. The second involves running into potential victims during a nocturnal patrol. The yellow scorpion's favourite meals are other arachnids, especially spiders, and insects. It's also prepared to tackle lizards or even young rodents.

Territorial loners
Scorpions are very intolerant of each other outside the mating season. Once, we'd spent almost an hour following an adult scorpion during one of its nocturnal walks, when another individual appeared on the scene. We watched as the adversaries came face to face, like a pair of sumo wrestlers. Then, suddenly, they were embroiled in mortal combat, each trying desperately to sting the other. Several minutes later, after various judo holds, losses of balance and numerous stings, the fight was over and the victor devoured its opponent.

The Spanish yellow scorpion has a whole series of enemies that reduce its population, including wild boar, shrews, hedgehogs, eagle owls and lizards. Its greatest foes, however, are humans. One day, while working on a photographic shoot in Soria, a rural area to the north of Madrid, a shepherd approached us with his flock. We tried to explain what we were doing and to tell him something about scorpions, but when we finished, he still said we should kill it. The scorpion's malicious reputation is extremely deep-rooted and it will take a long time to change popular opinion. But once we understand these small, wonderful creatures, we will learn how to avoid them and respect their rights as fellow inhabitants of the Earth.

Scorpions are arachnids, relatives of spiders and ticks.

Distribution
Our study focused on Buthus occitanus, a yellow scorpion, which is found over a wide area of the western Mediterranean (southern France, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and North Africa) as well as in Israel and Egypt. It spends most of the day under stones, but can also be found under logs or tree trunks, though this is less common. It lives in arid and semi-arid areas with little vegetation, preferring highlands and rocky landscapes.

Physical description
The Spanish yellow scorpion grows to 8-9cm long from its head to the tip of its sting. It has four pairs of legs and one pair of claws (pedipalps), which are used for grasping. It has eight eyes: two central ones and three on each side, though its sight doesn't seem to be very highly developed.

On the underside of the body lie the genital opening and sensory organs. Most obvious here are the 'combs', structures with around 30 spines, which are used to feel the surface as though they were hands groping their way along. They also have a sexual function.

Reproduction
A female gives birth to between 30 and 40 young, which are replicas of their parents but white in colour and with a softer, weaker appearance. As the young are born, one by one, they immediately clamber on to their mother's back, clinging on to avoid falling or simply to avoid being eaten by her. They stay there for one or two weeks, which is how long it takes to moult.

The young, which are about a centimetre in length, feed on their reserves for the first few days of life. As they grow, they develop the characteristic yellow colour. At 7-10 days, a daring few get off their mother's back to be followed by the rest. They soon learn to catch small prey for themselves, and undergo six more moults before reaching maturity after about a year. They live for several years.

The Spanish yellow scorpion, a common inhabitant of the Spanish highlands, does not usually live close to people, and encounters with it can be avoided. It will always be inclined to flee, but if it is interfered with or cornered, it will try to defend itself by using its sting.

The poison
The sting is bulbous, very hard and ends in a sharp, black point. Inside, there are two separate sacs of poison that are emptied via a duct. Each sac is surrounded by smooth muscle tissue, which expels the contents when it contracts. The contraction is voluntary and vigorous.

The poison is neurotoxic (attacking the nervous system) and causes partial paralysis or death of other small animals. Our studies and consultations led us to the conclusion that scorpions are immune to their own poison, but this depends on factors such as the individual's health, where it is stung and the dose of the injection.

Symptoms and treatment
Scorpion stings are common in Spanish rural areas. The victim feels a very sharp pain around the sting, but it is often very difficult to locate the exact position of entry, and the inflammation is so great that the victim feels the area will explode. Later there may be a violet rash, accumulations of liquid and even blistering. The effects of a sting tend to last between 24 and 48 hours and are of medium danger.

Treatment involves giving a local anaesthetic in the area where there is most pain and an analgesic and anti-inflammatory to combat the main symptoms. There is no need to take the medication for more than a day or so. The seriousness of the sting depends on various factors, including the health and age of the patient (it is more dangerous for children and the elderly) and the location and dose of the poison.

Serious cases can involve anaphylactic shock. Other symptoms may include vomiting, fever, headaches, breathing difficulties and temporary loss of consciousness, which only occurs in very few cases. Nevertheless, medical attention should always be sought for a sting.

The strength of the poison of yellow scorpions can vary, depending on the geographic location of the scorpion. Some are more dangerous than others. It is always worth avoiding being stung in the first place, by procedures such as always checking beneath a stone before putting your hand under it and always checking your footwear before putting it on.

Scorpion stings also pose a danger to domestic and farm animals, particularly hunting dogs, puppies and cows. The symptoms are similar to those in humans, and similar treatment is given.
