Playing Maureen? XD I think we're a bit beyond that, hun.

Wicked into a musical; what rumours have you been hearing?

Wicked is still a giant, world-wide phenominon of a musical. To release a movie right now would be fruitless. I'm fairly sure that a movie of Wicked will be released, but, like RENT, not until they have squeezed as much money as possible out of the show. When tickets sales begin to fall in five, ten, who knows, twenty years, then we will see a Wicked: The Movie being released.

So, seeing as Idina is already much older than Elphaba the character, I don't think we'll be seeing Idina in the film, no.

I have already addressed this on the Wicked Guild, and I'll say it again. Steven Schwartz stated on playbill.com a few months ago that there are NO plans for a Wicked movie ANYTIME in the near future. As for the Kristin and Idina rumors about it... I have also been told by a reliable inside source that yes, Idina and Kristin had it in there original Wicked contracts that if a movie was produced, they would be considered for their respective roles, BUT there was nothing that guarantied the roles to them. Only that they would be considered. In my opinion, they are far to old play the parts one SCREEN. Stage and screen are totally different genres

Like Ariies, you need to look at it from the producers’ points of few. They are still making money on the show on stages all around the world. They will milk it on stage for YEARS until they can't get anything else out of it before they think movie. It will come at a point when they need to put new life into the stage show with a movie.

Rent took nearly 10 years to cross over to film, Phantom of the Opera even longer. It will be at LEAST that long before a Wicked one comes out.

I agree with everyone else... they'll wait until ticket sales slow. RENT and Phantom ticket sales sky rocketed after the movie came out, and they'll do the same for Wicked.

I think Kristen and idina are too old for their characters, and will definetly be when then movie comes out.

My personal favorite Elphie was Stephanie J Block... so I'm hopefuly for her but... eh, we'll see. I'm sure some day a movie will be made... but part of me is terribly frightened about it. I mean, I would go see it in a heartbeat, but nothing compares to it on stage, and it'll be the first movie musical I'll have seen the on stage version of (I saw Phantom after the I saw the movie, and I'll hopefully be seeing RENT on stage in March-ish). Defying Gravity is the scene that has me the most frightened... but it could be really cool.

Basically, I don't really care when the Wicked movie comes out, if it ever does. But I do want to see it.

I agree with the folks who say there probably won't be a movie until the stage show is losing steam, but not for monetary reasons. Instead, I think (hope) that producers will look at the example of the movie version of Annie which was either so bad or received so poorly that it affected the stage version so negatively that it ended up closing within a year!

I was watching Kennedy Center on PBS a while ago and their guest of the evening, Stephen Schwartz was saying that Wicked was originally going to be made into a live action, not-so-musical movie, but some order of events conspired against that plan and it became a Broadway musical instead.

As for it being a movie in the future, it's a very possible thing, I believe, but as a lot of other folks have said, probably not for a good couple of years. They're going to milk this cash cow for all she's worth.

alright. thanks guys ^.^

as for idina-and-kirsten-onscreen for the movie: look what they did for RENT. I think she could still do it... but i appear to be in the minority there.

Of course she could still do it. When your as good of an actress as Idina, age doesn't really make a difference. But, taking into consideration that the movie will probably not be for another 5 or 10 years, no matter how incredible an actress is, audiences won't believe that a 40-something year-old on screen is an 18 year old. It's different on stage, and it's was different in RENT, bumping 20-something year olds up to older 20-something or 30-something year olds.

very true. didn't think of that.
I guess they could use one actress for Shiz and Idina for the runaway.

Also, i wonder if they would base it on the movie or the musical...

hmm, I don't know. I mean it was a really wonderful musical, but I think it requires some time before it goes into pictures.

Yes, Demi Moore purchased the rights to the book WAY back around the time the book first came out. She wanted to produce it with herself as Elphaba but the production never took off.

I know I'm about to get killed for this but... she DID looked WAY to old for the character in the Rent movie. They ALLLL did except for the new cast members. I'm sorry, I'm a Renthead and I love the original cast, but I'm not gonna lie. Of the original cast the only one I thought was good was Jesse.

Pay two actresses to play the same part? Yeah right. They'd never use two actresses for the same character when the age difference is that close together. If it was the book, then I'd say yes two actresses because that is a drastic change in time, but the musical is only a few years. Five, six years tops. Why would they waste that money?

I only kind of agree with you there. I really despised Rosario Dawson, but I do think that some of the original cast did look a bit too old. Adam did, Fredi would have, if she was to be in the movie, but I don't think Idina or Wilson did at all.

Well, Stockard Channing was 35 when she played Rizzo, so you can never be too sure about them casting someone too old for a high school role. Though I still hope that they would get a different person who's a much better actress to play Elphaba, though Kristen Chenoweth is certainly short and high pitched enough to reprise her role.

I thought they all looked too old for the twenty-something year olds of the stage show. But the story was different, and they weren't trying to be those twenty-something year olds. Not only were they older, but they were playing older parts, I thought.
