A chilling breeze rustled within the boughs overhead and rippled across the small river and into the face of the lonesome male. The seasons were once again changing and winter was fast approaching as the trees were bare and parts of the woods were frosted with patches of snow. Staring into his own reflection, Tasubaa laid by the banks of the soothing waters as he looked into his reflection.

What had he become?

Valex had taken away his sight from his right eye and his entire pack had been swayed to mutiny against him. And that wolf, Maverick, was someone he hadn’t seen in ages; the one who promised him a pack and a new life. Perhaps that was only a dream whose flames had died long ago. Maybe he was never meant to find happiness.

Resting his head upon his paws as his metal ridden ears fell back against his skull, Tasu closed his eyes and exhaled a long, sorrowful breath. “What else is there? Everything- nothing matters anymore and I’m tired of falling for false hope and dreams.”

Darkness in his thoughts, darkness seeking to consume his heart.

But he couldn’t let it.

He’d become just like-

“No, I’ll never let myself become like Valex,” he growled, gritting his teeth as he tried to conjure the strength to stand up and move on once again. Breaching upwards, his legs trembled as the great wolf lacked such strength and energy. Futile, Tasubaa tumbled down towards the ground and rolled onto his side. He didn’t feel so good.

Creeping over towards the water as his paws pulled him closer, Tasubaa dipped his muzzle within the river and began to drink slowly. Perhaps a good drink would make him feel better.

The harsh, empty cry of a crow rose into the air and echoed through the chill of the skeletal looking trees of winter. The sound of feathers beating the air joined it soon enough and a crow of a rusty orange hue landed on a high perch. He clicked his beak and smiled in a way only birds could, ruffling his feathers and peering down at the male in the water. But he was meerly an observer, for he had not come to converse, only to watch.

For within an instant the true visitor appeared, as if out of nowhere. The ninja bred wolfess acted in silence out of habit, or perhaps one could say out of how she was created to be. She was born a killer, there was no doubt. She was trained a killer. But malice seemed to be the last thing found in her curious crimson eyes. She did not make a sound, for she was unable to, as she watched the all too familiar face by the river with a curious look. She stood in the tree as if she were a bird herself, alive in the heights above the world.

Metal ridden ears flickered, perking upwards as the rustling of feathers within the air had caught his attention. The senses of the fiery wolf were more acute since he had lost sight in one eye and, to Tasubaa, it was an asset.

Lifting up his head, Tasubaa turned around and narrowed his eyes towards the twisted and sickly trees. For there, settled upon a high perch, was a crow. The wolf knitted his brows together and tilted his head to the side slightly. There was something about the crow that was familiar- all too familiar.

Shaking his head as his locks of spikes swayed to the side, Tasubaa huffed a soft breath.

"I'm just seeing things," he coaxed himself into the thought that it couldn't be the same crow, well- could it? "Looking up towards the skies and through the trees, Tasubaa sighed.

"Whever you are, Shanti, I still love you."

"Oh please. You big softie~" Blinding Dusk cackled in his crow voice, opening his beak in a laugh with a flap of his wings. He honestly didn't understand why Shanti even "talked" do this wolf. He wasn't at all worth her time, not the heir to the great legacy her mother had carried. But Shanti had been built for her job, and little had be worked on as far as her personality went. So no matter if he was bonded to her or not, she was a strange one.

Shanti moved her head to tilt the other direction in curiousity, her ears catching all of his words. Love still wasn't something she understood. It wasn't something that had ever been included in her life, not ever. Her mother certainly hadn't loved her. With a blink of her eyes she moved down like a shadow, onto the ground. And suddenly she was at his side, peering at him with innocent eyes that honestly didn't belong on the face of one such as she.

"So it is you!" Tasubaa laughed, ears perked up more alert as his fire tipped tail swayed behind him. It was the same crow who always hung around where Shanti was and if he was here there was no doubt in his mind that she was lurking about within the seclusion of the shadows and trees. "Even the blood thirstiest of wolves fall for love," he grinned with a broad smile of pearly whites, "and I have been taken hostage by it."

Settling down upon his haunches, Tasubaa thumped his tail upon the ground. "So where is-"

Sly and mysteriously, Tasu glanced to his side where the wolfess sat beside him. Her eyes conveyed innocent yet they were, like her, mysterious yet soothing. His jaw slackened as he fell speechless. The one whom he had sought for had returned and she had found him rather than he finding her.

A warm smile trailed upon his maw. "Shanti," he softly spoke, delicately burying his muzzle within her fur and nuzzling against her. "I don't want to lose you again and please don't run off. My heart is yours, take it. I love you."

Shanti wagged her tail at his touch, for it told her more then his words did. And in all honesty...whenever he talked about this she just got confused. She still didn't quite understand what he meant when she said such things. But she smiled and wagged her tail, pretending like she understood. He said it so often, it had to be important...and she liked spending time with him, so if it made him happy she would do so.

"Why don't YOU make a better effort to follow her?" Blinding Dusk squawked simply. Shanti was not going to give up her purpose just for some weird wolf who decided he was smitten with her. He wouldn't allow it and besides-she knew nothing else. She couldn't live normally, it was far too late for such a thing as that.

His words sounded so confusing and, looking at Shanti, things were left better by touch and actions rather than words. Having Shanti around made him feel like he could do anything! It was a feeling as if he was invincible and only assured him that he would do anything to keep it.

"I did!" Tasubaa snapped, "I followed both you and Shanti everywhere but I could never keep up. I can't climb trees or fly but I never gave up searching and prayed to the gods that I'd find her someday." Gritting his teeth, the fiery wolf narrowed his vision towards the crow.

"What is it you want from me? Perfection for her? I'll do anything to win her heart and even give my life for her." Stammering his right paw, Tasu shook his head.

"Even if it means sacrificing everything for her I'll do it."

Glancing back at Shanti with fire-like orbs that were serene and calm, he smiled warmly and licked her muzzle as affection was better said with touch than any spoken words.

"I simply would like to point out that if you can't keep up, what is the point? She has things to do and she simply won't stop because you flash a smile at her. She is not a gentle flower, she needs nothing to hold her back. Eh, Shanti?" Blinding Dusk clipped with a ruffle of his feathers and a shift of his bird-feet.

But Shanti wasn't really listening, for words had never been what she had paid the most attention to in the first place. She felt her ears slip back in unconcious shyness, for such touches by others were not common to her. But the feeling they gave her was sweet and lingering and made her feel as if he were talking to her without words, which so few ever did. She gave a gentle wag of her tail and a small, sweet smile, looking almost bashful as she rode over her confusion without much thought.

Tasubaa had tuned out everything the crow had said as he found his orbs to become unable to drift away from those of the wolfess. It felt so surreal and these sensations were overtaking him.

Shanti was different; shy and so elusive as it was apparant that she never had been displayed such feelings before by another. Love was foreign to her and Tasubaa only hoped that he could display how he felt without confusing or jumbled words.

Delicately brushing his muzzle against her, Tasubaa maneuvered his head to lay across hers. He wanted to make her feel safe, secure and-loved.

"There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you," he whispered softly as his body seemed to wrap around hers.
