Starla shivered in the cold evening air. Winter was close at hand, and though it wasn't quite chilled enough for snow it was getting close. Enough so that she could see the mist of her breath when she breathed. But it wasn't the wind or the temperature that caused her to shudder. It was the rain.
No matter how many storms she weathered, or how many rivers she crossed she never seemed to get over her fear. It was binding, like a chain, locking her in the fear and memory of that day where water had taken away her life. So she continued to fear it and hate it with every fiber of her being. Which often left her a reck, as it was now.
She stood crouched under a pine tree, the only thing near that could have offered any shelter since the leaves were gone. Her muscles were tense under her striped fur and her nerves shot and she shook and growled at the drizzle outside. The waited, tortured, for it to end.

The pleasantries of Marzipan's youthful summer had melted away, as had his body. He was strong now, and large and burly. He had always been content with the fact that he wasn't the prettiest wolf in the woods, but now he couldn't help but to admire his new musculature. Everything rippled beneath his thick, silky coat. Granted, he was almost over the thrill of being fully grown.
The air was chilly tonight. In front of his face, he could barely see. The meager light that escaped from the blanket of clouds overhead was just enough to illuminate small clouds floating up from his nostrils as he exhaled. It wasn't the air that bit him the worst, however. The drizzle was making fast work of his thick coat, racing to touch his skin and chill him to the bones. His toes were already numb from the precipitation, and he was hardly aware of their existance as they padded dully over the wet leafbed.
His eyes cleared and lifted from his thoughts as his nostrils flared. A scent was bogged down by the rain, but it was near enough and recent enough to be noticed. His raven eyes scanned the dark, the night vision enabling him to spot a soggy form huddling close to the protection of a lone tree. He turned his body, taking in her scent more closely. She was scared, most definitely. Giving his tail a shake to slick the rain from it, he padded over, taking cautious steps as he neared her. He didn't want to startle her, afterall... being not the most attractive wolf in town oftentimes struck fear into the hearts of those he meant no harm to.
"Hello, there." He called softly, ears pressed forward against the plummeting drops to catch the fragile sound of a reply.(If you have AIM, I'd appreciate a tag on there where I can hear it <3 The sn is x la chupaflor)

But Starla did jump, much like a startled rabbit. Her limbs sprang like a rubber band as she whirled to face the sudden, unexpected call. Her white ears were pressed hard against her skull, her jaws parted to let her gasp and make a sharp intake of the cold air and show her teeth at the same time. But not matter how fierce she tried to be, she was meerly trying to keep her sanity and sooth her shot nerves. But anyone coming upon her near water, especially when rain was the case, would only see how very little control she really had and how sad it was.
Seeing it was another wolf she did the best glare she could in she shaken state, pressing her body closer agains the prickly, uncomfortable truck of the pine. "What?!" Her voice was sharp and clipped, but it quivered like the rhythm of the rain with her fright.

When she jumped, his posture straightened. He had been ready for her to snap back at him; he could smell her fear. Yet still, now that the frightened face was coming into focus in the dim light, it took him a moment to recollect himself after the mild shock. Scared and defensive were two traits Marzipan knew usually happened together, and one as a result of the other. He took a slow step forward, one numb set of pawpads taking weak footing on the slick, rainbeaten leaves.
"Excuse me," he started immediately to her stabbing answer. It was in his nature to be polite first and foremost, as he was bred of polite and reserved parents. His whole family, for the most part, was like this. "Is there something I could help you with? You seem frightened."

"Unless you can stop this sinful rain, then no you can't!" Starla spat without hesitation. But it was clear her attention had slipped away from him as she tilted her head, her bright amythest eyes peering up at what sky was visable from where she stood. It was as if she expected the clouds to part and hell to swallow her whole. In her mind it was nearly the same, for she avoided the raindrops like acid.
She didn't respond to his comment about her fear. She didn't need to be told she was afraid. She was very much aware of her fear. In fact, she felt quite right to be having it. She honestly didn't understand why others were so relaxed around water. It stole lives just as it gave them.

His piercing red eyes stayed steady on the striped form in front of him. Her harsh words couldn't cut him, as he could see right through them. Yes, her fear was blatantly obvious, and the anger she showed towards him was just an outlet for her hostility towards the rain. He couldn't comprehend how someone could be afraid of something as innocent as a drizzle. Yes, it was a pain to dry out a coat, especially a thick one like his own... but there weren't flash floods around here, and that was the only dangerous thing a rainstorm could bring.
For a moment, he pondered sharing his upbringing with her. He was a master of the water, in so many words. He lived by the riverbed in his family's packlands, and thrived off the fish it provided. He drank from the crystal pools it formed around the edges, puddling up between clean rocks where it couldn't sweep the bed clean. After a moment's reflection, he shook the thought from his mind.
"Perhaps I could keep you company under there?" His words were still casual, as was everything else about him. Casual, yet proper. That was how he'd always been. As much as he enjoyed being around the water, and had enjoyed a childhood living off the water's provisions for him, he did not like the thought of standing in the rain to confront the scared she-wolf. Afterall, his coat was thick and once he was soaked clean through, it was all over as far as warmth. He stood and waited calmly for her answer, the rain running off his nose and ears.

"I don't need your company!" Starla said fiercely, turning her head to fix him with a glare. Her body still quivered from her broken nerves and from the chill, and by the way she pressed herself against the tree in hopes of protection there was more then enough room for him to sit if he wanted. And she didn't say no. Because in her mind that was a no, she didn't want him there. She didn't want anyone anywhere near her. They were a waste of her time. The only person she needed to find was her sister, and that was for a dirty and acidic feeling as revenge. She had never been a social wolfess, even before the accident, and she wasn't going to start now. Hell no.

"All right." He said, letting his eyes sink slowly into hers, as if he was touching her in some way. Then, he broke his gaze. "You looked like someone that might want to talk, is all." He murmured, picking himself up off his rump and shaking the excess water carefully from his coat, so as not to assault her with the thing she seemed to hate most.
"If you need me, I will be over here." And with that, he moved to the other side of the tree, where there was a small, cramped space of dry, and laid down, resting his chin on his paws and waiting for the chilly air to aid his coat in drying once more.

"Hmph!" She snorted, shaking raindrops from her nose with a shudder and curling even closer to the tree, pushing the intensity of his gaze to the back of her mind. She wished as if she could vanish into the wood and just make the damn rain stop. But she couldn't always avoid the water that she feared, and this was one of those times. She closed her eyes, as if it would make the rain, stranger, and chill disappear and leave her well enough alone. She just wanted to be alone.
