It was a warm winter day, the sort where the ground was covered with snow but it was the sticky kind of snow, warmed by hours of sun. One days like today the two-legger kids would be making things out the snow to throw at each other, and the Soquilis would be out prowling, enjoying the sun.

Or in Ladius' case, the water.

With great energy, the doberman colored mare was swimming laps of the cold water spring that sat in one corner of 'her' personal meadow; never mind the fact that ice floes floated in said spring as well, as far as Ladius was concerned it was a great day for a swim.

Death floated on the rifts in the air, not entirely sure why it was so cold up this far north since she lived so much further south than most Soquili. Her wings batted the cold winds as she let her ebony mane and tail float out on the wind behind her, her soft grey eyes dazzling in the sunlight as she whinnied up to the clouds even further above her.

Swirling down towards the ground, because she'd much rather have been on the ground to play in the snow that was there, Death let her ebony hooves tap the ground for a moment and she smiled. Birds exploaded from the trees to her side and flew up into the sun as the mare smiled and settled her wings on her thin back gently, admiring the hoof prints she was leaving in the light snow.

Ruffling her feathers to release a little heat, the ghostly mare trotted around in circles to try and find at least some sort of food to eat. She'd been flying for many hours, at least a short meal would make her happy.

"Whoof-da!" Grinning from ear to ear, Ladius burst to the surface of the water, whipping back her water-logged braids with a toss of her head as she climbed out of the spring onto the grass, shaking her body vigorously and sending water droplets showering onto the snow. Nevermind she herself was soaking wet and standing in the snow; there was simply nothing as pleasant as a swim!

But now that that was over, time to go raid her apple stash for something to munch.

Words caught Death's white ears and the little ghostly mare turned to look at a dark colored mare with braids. She was dripping wet, the obvious cause being the little pond there she'd walked out of.

Grey eyes danced as Death smiled at the other and swished her ebony tail gently against her back legs.

"Hello cousin. What makes you swim on a day so cold?" Death's ghostly soft voice rang across the distance between the two and she nodded her ebony head, her thick black mane swishing with the motion just enough to show the tattoo under her eye. The Eye of Horus glittered from it's spot under her eye and the tiny mare's white fur seemed to make it stand out all the brighter.

At first, Ladius was taken aback at being spoken too; she hadn't even realized that there was anyone else there until that eerie voice came seemingly out of nowhere. Obviously she needed to beef up her training if she could be snuck up on this easily.

Still, it only took her a moment to find the source; a white and black mare that simultaneously stuck out and blended in with the snow. Now wonder Ladius hadn't exactly seen her...that, and she'd been distracted with her swiiming!

Still, no reason not to be hospitable, as long as the mare gave her no reason to. Bowing her head slightly, Ladius gave the other mare a nod, her dark eyes calculating the measure of the white mare. "Hello to you as well, friend; I swim becasue I enjoy swimming, cold or no. But what brings you here to my secluded meadow?"

What brought her here? Well that was hard to answer.

"The wind." She answered slowly in her gentle voice. Her gray eyes shimmered as she glanced up and down the wet mare. "Sorry for asking about the swimming. It just intreigues me so since I can't swim easily." One of her wings fluttered to explain why through example.

Of course she didn't delve far too much into the lives of others unless they felt like divulging that information to her. It wasn't Death's right or her privelage to ask unless they were friends and she barely knew this larger female.

"It wasn't my intentions to intrude on a secret place however, so if you'd rather be alone I'd gladly bow out." She smiled disarmingly at the other female, her ebony tail flickered once more and she nodded.

"The wind, huh?" Well, that didn't seem too crazy a concept, not when the white mare's wings stuck out like pair of sore thumbs. Ladius had always thought it would be nice to have wings, but she'd never cared much about it one way or another.

She shook herself out once again before walking down the meadow, sizing up the white mare. Upon closer inspection, she could see that the other was actually a great deal smaller than she herself, and frailer looking as well. Not much of an athlete, probably. "Swimming is fun, but in this weather not for everyone. If you don't swim much, then you shouldn't take on this coldness." Not that it really mattered much.

At Death's question, she simply shrugged. "Nothing secret, just a place to call my own. As long as you don't bug me, I couldn't care less whether you stay or go." Maybe a bit abrasive, but that was just how she was.

The gray eyes watched the other female silently and the ghostly female refrained from speaking for a long moment. She didn't really have any place to call her own. She had Khairi's special place, he'd allowed her to call that home ever since they became mates, but she didn't have a place just for her.

The little mare nodded, she respected that.

"Well, if you don't mind that I eat for a little." Death said, shrugging her wings gently and looking down at the snow covered grass again. It froze her muzzle to eat it but she needed to eat before she took off flying again. "It takes quite a bit to lift a body up into the air with just two wings."

Ghostly laughter lit up the area for a moment before the white mare leaned down her head and chewed gently at the grass again.

...Ok, this mare was a strange one. A little creepy. Not scary, but definitely creepy; there was just something about her that made all the hair on Ladius' neck stand straight up and stay there.

But whatever. As previously metioned, as long as the mare didn't annoy Ladius, she could do whatever. It wasn't like she was one of those frickin' territorial males that had ego complexes which required bolstering by incessant prattle about 'territory'. Yeah..

"Snack all you want; it's not like there's not enough grass to go 'round." Shrugging her shoulders, Ladius finally decided that there was no threat here. She could deal with this easily enough."

A chuckle came from Death's white muzzle again and she chewed at the grass a little more before dancing over to a new spot. She wasn't beyond eating when she was told, it wasn't as if she were stuck up.

She knew that there were females in the world that didn't really care all too greatly and the mare actually felt bad for them. They were enough of idiots to do what stallions told them to, though she had to admit that some of the wingless mares had to deal with not being able to fly away from that sort of thing, but Death didn't see any reason why they couldn't just leave.

Swishing her tial and looking over at the other, she thought deeply to herself for a moment before opening her muzzle to speak again, "So what made you choose this place then cousin?"

After giving the strange white mare her relative seal of approval, Ladius had simply walked past to a grazing place of her own a few yards away; she wasn't the type to get all buddy-buddy with strangers, after all, nor was she the type who was fond of close contact. Well actually, scratch that; she was more than willing to get close if it was in the course of a good fight.

But this wasn't a fight now, was it?

Still, she wasn't so far away that she couldn't hear the other mare's question. At first, she simply went on chewing her mouthful; if the white one was going to ask questions of someone with a mouthful, then she'd simply have to wait for an answer.

But even once she swallowed, the drak mare was silent for a moment. Why did it matter? "I just like this place." Nice, short, and to the point.

Nodding her head simply so that her black mane floated lightly in the air. She was all but made of wind after all.

"That's fair enough." Death said, lifting her gray eyes to the sky. It was about time she got home, Banhi and Khairi would be worried about her.

So with a faint smile and a nod of her head, Death called over the words 'good bye' in her gentle voice and kicked her ebony hooves to the air to take off. Large wings spread out to catch the wind and she hovered for a moment over the ground before she floated up into the air higher and grinned.

Khairi wouldn't expect her home this early.
