Now, onto the amazing post about how, and why?
Confusion spreads easily towards the little newbies when they heard that these two are cousins. Of course, since they are cousins, it can't ever happen. It's absolutely impossible for them to be paired together. Right?
Wrong. Absolutely wrong. If anything, they have a pretty good chance of getting together. There are many reasons behind that, and the most obvious would have to be the things people chose to ignore.
Naruto is supposed to be a more historical manga (unfortunatly, Kishimoto's brain is kinda DEAD, so he puts a TV in Sasuke's room) and in the past, family marriages were very common, and usually not an eyelash was bat when someone found out their friend was marrying their cousin.
Unfortunatly, again, Kishimoto made Naruto into a modern-history manga, which kind of pisses me off...
But anyhoo - even in Japan now, cousins are allowed to marry. There's only a 3% chance that their children will be deformed, and that's if they have bad genes. If the family has a very good gene, like, let's say an amazing running ability, then that gene might pass onto Neji and Hinata's children, making them incredible runners. Oh, and it's a 3% chance
Now, onto more basics, about how this would work for the characters, not really worrying about logic - it's obvious that they each care for each other, even if only in a brotherly-sisterly way. If they were to fall in love, and get married, that relationship would bring upon amazing opportunities for both of them.
Another more logical mention - okay, seriously...Hinata is the heiress to the Hyuga clan. Neji is a prodigy. Hiashi would be absolutely pleased if they fell in love, because do you realize how awesome their kids would probably be?
And even if they didn't fall in love, and Hiashi arranged the marriage, I truthfully believe that they would fall in love. Each of them would weigh out the others faults and personalities.
And this would also give an amazing chance to Neji. He's been suffering as a cadet branch born child, and now, I think he'd finally have his chance. Being married to the clan leader, and having children with her would give him a chance. And knowing Hiashi, he'd favor his nephew and daughter, and give their children a second chance for Neji and Hinata.
In other words - letting their children be main branch, even though the father is cadet.

How this would effect Neji and Hinata's lives
In my opinion, this would do a lot for both of the characters. Especially Neji, if I may say so myself.
People enjoy countering my love for NejiHina by saying that Neji was the one who made Hinata weak, and made her so shy. But the one who made her weak, was her father. Neji just happened to hate the main branch, and she was the closest target of his anger.
Isn't it true though, that each of them cared for the other deeply, sibling or otherwise?
He did call her cute, after all, no one can deny that he thought of her as a cute girl at one point - I'll bet he still does, and is just trying to hide it.
ALSO - Having Neji marry Hinata would be a great opportunity for him. After all the pain and the suffering he's been through due to the main branch, marrying Hinata would give him a chance to escape this pain, and it would also probably free his children. If he married Hinata Hyuuga, heiress to the clan, it's obvious Hiashi would favor both of them - Hinata's his oldest daughter, and Neji's a freaking prodigy. He'd most definatly allow their children to be main branch for Neji's sake, if not because he wanted main grandchildren. :3 Hiashi as a Grampa!
Hinata is a gentle person - if she finally took over the clan, and married Neji, I'm basically positive that the cadet branch would show more trust in the main branch. Hinata would do her best, with Neji's help, to solve everyone's problems, to help things become more normal. She would be that kind of ruler.
This would make Neji happy, and that's exactly what he needs. Happyness. It would probably make Hinata happy as well - she'd have a chance to be with the person she loves, and to take care of her clan. How is that not great for both of them?
Even if the arranged marriage thing turned up, I believe that their love would still prevail, and that each would become closer to each other, even if it took more time.
That's my view, at least. I know I've converted people though, so I won't keep it...I'll end up repeating myself. xD

Neji x Hinata - Canon or Crack?
It's been considered both many a time, even in my book! Most certainly, there are hints and tips pointing towards NejiHina, even if they are small hints. Then again, there are other things that seem to provoke this pairing, making it seem like it deserves the lable of 'crack' until there is such an improvement in Neji and Hinata's relationship.
If you ignore the basics of History, and the basics of Japanese relationships, then you're bound to come up with NejiHina as crack. Of course, Kishimoto-san will probably end up neglecting his own culture a bit (he already has, adding a TV in a ninja's room) and might even forget that cousin to cousin relationships are not frowned upon in Japan, because Japanese people are smart and know that babies do not get deformed over cousin to cousin relationships - actually, they do, but only three percent chance.
Isn't love worth that chance?
I most certainly think I'd do it if I was really in love.
And also, Kishimoto can hardly overlook the fact that all of the Hyuga's have the same eye color and hair color which would be impossible if they weren't all pure blooded.
And even if you don't believe it, NejiHina has been hinted at, once you start getting over the fact that logic makes it very, very likely. It's obvious Neji cares about Hinata, she cares about him. Yes, Neji did throw his anger over the main branch at her, but wouldn't this make for an interesting development in the two of them, and their relationship?
In Japan, saying "I will protect you" is usually an exclamation of love. People don't say "I love you" they say "I promise to protect you." Obviously, Neji wants to protect (love?) Hinata, and so does Hiashi.
"If Hinata were here, I'd ask you to protect her." he says, during one of the fillers. Neji gasps, then calms, looking sadly into his tea. Yes, it's a filler, but don't the directions have to know something about what Kishimoto is thinking?
Unfortunatly...The fillers lead us in a three-way triangle. NejiHina-NaruHina-NaruSaku. So it's very confusing. Hopefully *dives from bricks* it'll turn out NejiHina and NaruSaku...But who knows?
Kishimoto is the all-seeing eye....
However, I've gotten a bit off topic. But that's about all I have to say about NejiHina having a chance to become a canon pairing.

I'm a NejiHina Supporter, I mean since Neji suffers being in the cadet branch, if he married Hinata, He would be in the main branch. thats my #1 reason for this pairing =). Add me to supporters list whee
