Raven waited for his opponent to show up. The strange thing is, his opponent was his friend. Both had met up at the Academy and, thanks to Raven’s own upbeat personality, had become friends almost instantly. Although Raven had already chosen his classes, he wasn’t sure if Nikamura Tomashi had picked out yet. Regardless, both had agreed to meet up on the rooftop of Raven’s old home to get some practice in before classes started. The two new students wanted to get used to battling as much as possible before classes started.
His house was a pretty big house for a resident of the Rukongai. It was a testament to all his hard work. Since, he had to make everything from scratch. There was a warm fire and a single bed that sat under the stairs that led to the rooftop. Raven looked at his clean house and smiled, the wooden floors had a nice sheen to them. All was set for his guest.
After admiring his handy work, Hawthorne took up several large pieces of wood as well as two wooden training swords. He climbed up the stairs and opened the door to his roof. The torches were already in place and all Raven had to do was put more wood into the fires. One torch was placed at the four corners, giving the roof some illumination. The clouds had slightly covered the sun. So the lighting was slightly off. Not to mention it was a chilling 23 degrees feranheight (sp).
He quickly ran over to his door and unlocked it for Tomashi. His friend hadn’t arrived yet, but Raven didn’t want him to be locked out in the light snow. He walked back up the stairs and went back to filling up the torches with more wood.[11]

The sound of crunching snow could be heard as Tomashi made his way to his destination, Raven's old home. Raven was a new friend of his he met at the Academy Meeting. Strange enough, it didn't take Tomashi very long to become friends with him. Despite that, Tomashi didn't trust Raven entirely, it was just something he couldn't do in such a short time. Trust was something that took months or even years for him.
Lifting his head, Tomashi noticed burning wood atop a roof. "This must be it." He said to himself as he continued ahead. Tomashi was a bit nervous to be sparring. He hadn't wielded a real sword before. He had practice with a wooden stick which he carved into a sword shape, but that was about it. Standing before the door, he hesitated to open the door. The blistering winds drove him on to get inside and out of the cold. "Brrrrrrr. Freezin'." He whined, closing the door behind him. Pulling the hood off his head, revealing his jet black locks. "Raven.." He called out, his voice echoed throughout the room. Walking ahead, he spotted a faint glow at the end of a hall as well as that familiar chilling breeze. Following the light, it led to the stairs which would lead to the roof. Once he arrived on the roof, a cool breeze blew across his face. "Oh, there you are." He spoke up as he walked near one of the fires set in the corner.

Raven greeted Tomashi as he put the last plank of wood on the fourth torch. Raven laughed through his scarf. His shinigami uniforms were tied together by the long scarf and they also covered the bottom part of his face. His voice was slightly muffled but he could still be clearly understood. Hawthorne nodded to Tomashi and shook his hand.
The two walked over to another corner where six wooden training swords, each about five feet in length. Raven took two and tossed one to Tomashi. Raven smiled and stepped over to the middle. There was a silence as the two stared at each other for a moment. Raven ran his hand on the hilt of his training sword, it was made out of oak so it was slightly rough on the hilt, but it provided a secure hold. He had personally carved out intricate designs on the hilt for even more grip.
"Well, it's a nice day for a little fight, don't you think Tomashi? Before we actually use our zanpkatou's let's get our blood flowing," Raven paused for a moment. "Since you're the guest, feel free to make the first move."
Raven shrugged and placed both hands on his wooden sword and stood in a basic chodon stance, the blade in front of him with the tip pointed at his target's throat, the hilt slightly below belt level.--------------------- Weapon Stats:

Tomashi rubbed his hands together near the fire before catching the wooden sword. "Sure thing." Raising his arm, Tomashi held the wooden sword slightly behind him and a few inches above the floor. His feet were together and his other arm hung limp by his side. There was really no benefit to his stance, he just stood this way to begin the match. Leaning back slightly, Tomashi brought the wooden sword up and placed his other hand around the hilt. "Get ready.." With that, Tomashi charged.
Just to get things rolling, Tomashi came in with the basic attack, a cross slash towards Raven's chest. He wasn't very experienced in swordsmanship, he only knew the basics. There was no one there to teach him other attacks so all he did was slash and slash. That would be another purpose for entering the Shinigami Academy, he could be trained in zanjutsu, something he'd enjoy greatly.

Raven frowned as Tomashi came forward. The two had locked eye contant with each other and this gave Hawthorne time to relax and plan out his movements. Tomashi didn't have that much battle exprience, as was seen when he attempted a basic attack. Raven's eyes flashed a sharp purple and he bent down into his attack stance. As Tomashi charged, Raven did as well.
As the two inched together, Tomashi raised his sword and Raven saw the incoming attack as a downward chest strike. Raven's eyes glittered in the dim sunlight and his scarf fluttered in the wind behind him. The strike came within several inches of his face when Hawthorne attempted to stepside the attack by doing a quick dash to his right.--------------- Dodge Roll: 1D20 + 14 ---------------

((now since I dodged, I counter attack)) Raven smiled at his success, he saw Tomashi's shocked face. Honestly, Raven couldn't blame him. Nobisuke was also surprised by Raven's speed. The shinigami-in-training lunged forward at Tomashi's exposed left flank. The wind howled and his scarf fluttered as Raven charged forth, clearing the last two feet within a half second.
To Raven, a fight was a rush of intense feeling. Unmatched by anything else in the whole universe. His piercing purple eyes reflected the enjoyment he was and had while fighting. And Raven loved every moment of it, win or lose.
The fight was going to be intense, Raven thought to himself as he brought the wooden sword across, in a horizontal arc. The harder the fight, the more skill you will gain afterwords. His own personal experience told him this. Regardless of how it would end, the shinigami-in-training struck out, without any hesitation, and aimed for Tomashi's exposed ribcage.---------------------- Melee Accuracy Roll: 1D20 + 1 + 6 ----------------------

Tomashi had a strong feeling Raven would dodge his simple and basic attack. He hadn't counted on it landing. But neither did he count on Raven moving so swiftly and counterattacking just as swift. Tomashi moved his right foot back and brought the wooden sword up to try and block Raven's counterattack.
"Che. If the academy is gonna be like this. I better get the training more often." He thought to himself as he refocused on the charging Raven. Tomashi then began to think one more step further. If he were to block the attack, how would he counterattack? Perhaps a parry would leave an opening for a strike. Shifting his footing, he positioned himself to parry the strike towards his seemingly open ribcage.

Damage! Raven frowned as Tomashi attempted to block. It was going to be close, Raven thought. The world slowed down for Hawthorne as he closed in. The intense adrenaline rush was overtaking him. It was one hell of a warm up. The wind screamed and picked up speed, in favor of Raven's strike. The wind hit his face, and Raven pushed his arms hard.
It was going to be REALLY close, he said to himself. The tip of Tomashi's training sword barely scraped the back of his blade. Raven had gotten under his oppenents guard right in the nick of time. An instant slower and Tomashi would have successfully blocked. There was a loud thwacking sound as the wood hit the flesh. Raven smiled grimly at Tomashi's shocked face. It would not be that simple. Training meant TRAINING. The two fighters were training to fight for their lives. Hopefully Tomashi had learned this lesson now that he felt what it was like to get hit.------------------ Damage Roll: 1 - 1 ------------------

Tomashi saw that his attempts at blocking or even parrying the attack failed. Now all he could do was brace himself for impact. As the hit struck his ribcage, he winced in pain. "Ahh!" Stumbling back, Tomashi rubbed his rib. He wanted to see the damage, but he also didn't want to lose focus on the spar. Once the pain subsided just a bit, Tomashi regained his composure. Despite being hit, he was beginning to enjoy himself.
His rib throbbed continuously but he ignored it for now. That adrenaline was rushing through his veins, clouding his mind from the pain in his side. He soon realized the window he had to attack was now closed because he wasted too much time reacting to the hit. Another lesson to be learned. With both hands holding the hilt, Tomashi lunged at Raven, thrusting the wooden blade repeatedly towards Raven's upperbody.

Raven backflipped away from Tomashi after his strike hit. He saw the reaction in Tomashi's eyes. For the first few seconds, his opponent seemed very, very weak. The wind screeched again, as if in rejection. The sound from his scarf continued to bang with every movement of the wind. It steadily increased, like a heartbeat. Raven took these signs of the spirits to heart and gazed deep in his opponent's eyes. They flared with a fire Raven had not seen yet.
So, he still has the will, Hawthorne thought to himself as he brought up his blade back into the defensive stance. Hawthorne saw the fire, but he didn't see the level headedness that his opponent had eariler. A bad mistake, one must always keep a cool head even if the rest of his body is consumed with the flames of battle.
The adrenaline rush had not completely taken over Raven's opponent, as he did not yet suffer from the "Fighter's Frenzy." A state known to most fighters as the state of mind when a fighter loses all senses and attacks like a beserker. Few are able to actually fight efficiently in this state, and most experienced fighters avoid this state of mentality as much as possible.
Raven himself had to train a long time to over come it, and he still sometimes succumbed to it. But, in this sort of fight, it was not an option. And, if it was not an option in a simple training match, it was DEFINITELY fatal in an actual battle.
Hawthorne shook his head. He was also losing focus. Strangely enough, Tomashi had taken advantage of Raven's momentarily lapse in focus and lunged at him with a thrust aimed for his chest. Instead of dodging to the right, which would be expected since Raven had done so already, he attempted to catch his opponent off guard again. So, using the enviroment to his advantage, Raven attempted to step-slide to his opponent's right flank.--------------------- Dodge Roll: 1D20 + 14 ---------------------
