I like Poppy Z. Brites stories a lot. Not too scary at all, but sad and poetic. I might share some of her short stories here.
Note: If you share stories too, make sure you give credit to the author, by naming the author at the end of the story.

Steven King and Poe. Other than that I like a few books by people but not enough for them to make my list.

I kinda like Robert Westall books- for example, my favorite ghost story "The Promise." But King's still the greatest.

King is all right, really.
My favourite is Michael Slade. They're more psycho thrillers, but it's the same sense. They're very well done - and quite odd.
I read a Poppy Z book and I can't remember which one...
I adore Poe.
Another one of the best, H.P Lovecraft. Beyond wonderful.

I've not read many hardXcore horror novels, but I'd say King is pretty durn awesome. Anne Rice's stuff isn't AAH SCARY enough fer my liking (It mostly seems to be sexualised horror stuff).. Poe's stories are pretty neat; I adored The Black Cat, Masque of the Red Death, the TellTale Heart and Pit and the Pendulum. And Christ, Fall of the House of Usher kept me up a few nights. o_O

I'd have to say stephen King. I also like that Kingdom Hospital series he made. The funny thing about his shows and movies is that he's usually in them as a side character with a small role. It's awesome because when you watch his movies, a good game to play is find Stephen King.
