bishounen.comEpisode 1: BREATHLESS
Aoyagi, Ritsuka transfers to a new school and isolates himself from his classmates, despite the attempts of the well-meaning but very simple-minded Yuiko to get close to him. After school, a young man named Soubi claiming to know Ritsuka's dead brother appears, and Ritsuka finds his feelings stirring. Ritsuka finds out his brother was involved in strange magical battles. Together with Soubi, they were known as Beloved. It appears Ritsuka is destined to be one of these fighters too. His name is Loveless, and now through Seimei he has inherited the fighting unit Beloved- Soubi. Ai and Midori, collectively known as Breathless, appear to try to take Ritsuka away. I didn't realize it the first time through, but even though Ritsuka was there, Soubi actually fought solo (auto) on this one too, and not with Ritsuka as a Sacrifice. None the less, he beats Breathless. From the very beginning, Soubi states that he loves Ritsuka (even though they just met) and would do anything he asks.
Episode 2: MEMORYLESS
It became clear even in episode 1 that Ritsuka is suffering from the death of his brother and probably some other un-mentioned events. (His mother is also not stable.) Episode 2 reveals that he meets weekly with a psychiatrist. At school, Yuiko continues working on Ritsuka, but he ditches her after school when Soubi shows up. That evening, Ritsuka finds Seimei's will which reveals he was killed by someone called the Seven Moons. Not only that, but Soubi is there because Seimei told him to, and furthermore told him to love Ritsuka. Ritsuka resents the word love being used like that, just because Seimei told him to. Breathless shows up again, and this time Ritsuka participates as the Sacrifice. We see a little bit more about how Spell Battles work, and once again Loveless wins.
Episode 3: BONDLESS
Yayoi, who has a big crush on Yuiko is introduced. He doesn't take well to Ritsuka and Yuiko's closeness. Hitomi-sensei takes notice of Soubi. She also asks Ritsuka to bring one of his parents to Bring Your Parents day at school, at which he looks very upset. A quick flashback to Seimei treating Ritsuka kindly after their mother abused him. Outside, Soubi reveals that he is a college student. He also gives Ritsuka a cell phone, and promises to always answer if Ritsuka calls. They go to Yuiko's house where Soubi makes dinner and tells them he's an art student. Soubi's roommate Kio gets jealous of Ritsuka. Ritsuka's mother refuses to go to school with him. Soubi shows up and asks Ritsuka to pierce his ears. In exchange he promises to do anything Ritsuka asks. But afterwards, when Ritsuka asks about the Seven Moons, Soubi refuses to answer.
Episode 4: FRIENDLESS
Soubi once again refuses to tell Ritsuka about the Seven Moons, but promises to do anything else. Disbelieving, Ritsuka tells him to go take a picture of a rare mountain cat. Ritsuka is late to school due to an episode with his mom, and some girls break open the jam Yuiko had promised to give him. Ritsuka shows up and tells the girls they deserve to die. Hitomi-sensei asks Yuiko about Ritsuka, and Breathless shows up to talk with Ritsuka. He calls Soubi, but gets no answer. Breathless tell him that they go to a school for Fighters, and warn him that Soubi is a liar, and encourage him come to the school, where people will tell him the truth. Hitomi continues to worry about Ritsuka, noting how much his personality changed 2 years ago, and goes to visit his house. She runs into Soubi, who notices her interest in him, and tell her it will never happen. Just as she gets upset and runs off, Ritsuka shows up. He gets angry, but Soubi shows him pictures of the mountain cat.
Episode 5: SLEEPLESS
While all the characters at school (except Yuiko!) are tired from staying up worrying about their various problems, a new pair of fighters comes to town. Ritsuka meets with Soubi to ask him about Seimei again. Instead of answering, Soubi informs him that if he beats the new fighters about to appear, he'll get some answers. Sure enough, Sleepless shows up with an envelope thet say contains what Ritsuka wants to know. Loveless beats Sleepless fairly easily, though in the course of the fight we discover Soubi's teacher back at the spell battle school is a sore spot for him. But the letter turns out to be nothing but a string of numbers and letters. After the fight, Ritsuka and Soubi exchange a couple sweet emails.
Episode 6: PAINLESS
The school-side characters try to talk Ritsuka into joining clubs, but he refuses (because he has to go to his psychologist appointments). Soubi tries to follow him to that afternoon's appointment. He talks to Katsuko-sensei about the fact that when he's mother's Ritsuka returns, he will disappear. After a talk about life and memories, she takes him out for a date. Meanwhile, Hitomi-sensei tries to pay a visit to Ritsuka's house, but runs into a creepy pair of little boys. Soubi interrupts and the boys reveal themselves as the paired fighters Zero. While Ritsuka's date continues, Soubi fights, and we see flashbacks of abuse at his old Sensei's hands, where we learn that Zero does not feel pain. They seem to be doing pretty well against him in the fight.!
Episode 7 TEARLESS
Ritsuka calls Soubi, but he doesn't pick up. Soubi finally beats the Zero boys by using an attack which lowers the temperature. They're apparently weak to it, but since they can't feel anything, don't realize how cold they're getting. (This idea comes from a flashback of quite harsh abuse from Ritsu-sensei.) Just before they go down, Youji puts a nail through Soubi's hand for the fun of it. In another conversation where he attempts to put off Hitomi-sensei, he tells her it is better if he is alone, and is completely controlled by one person. Ritsuka senses something is wrong, and eventually catches up to the injured Soubi. He manages to hide his hand, but Ritsuka notices the blood afterwards. The next day when Hitomi tries to confiscate a game someone brought to school, they say something that reminds her of the conversation with Soubi and she over-reacts. She also tells Ritsuka about Soubi's injury. It also seems Soubi has taken in the Zero boys since they had nowhere else to go after their defeat.
Episode 8 TRUSTLESS
Ritsuka's therapist tells him people can lie when they like someone. Ritsuka goes over some of the Seven Moons stuff again, and then orders Seimei to tell him from now on when something happens. Kio flips out at finding the Zero boys at Soubi's now. Kouya and Yamato are introduced, and get mail from Nagisa telling them to go fight Soubi. They identify themselves as zero and pull him into a fight. He tells them he's not going to call Ritsuka. They hurt him pretty badly by attacking his previous injuries. In the end, he quits fighting and lets them hurt him, saying no one ordered him to win. Ritsuka finds Soubi and demands to know why he broke his promise not to fight alone. Soubi can't walk and ultimately passes out without answering.
Episode 9: SKINLESS
Youji and Natsuo help Ristuka get Soubi back to the apartment. While he sleeps they discuss the nature of fighting units and Sacrifices, and the fact that Soubi likes taking orders. "It's what he wants. Seimei kept him like a pet." They point out that Ritsuka's real destined fighting unit, the one that shares the name Loveless, is out there somewhere. Meanwhile, Nagisa-sensei is unhappy with Ritsu-sensei's reaction to her "victory." Then Kouya is distraught because Nagisa said it was possible to trade Sacrifices with the zero series, and Kouya is afraid of being separated from Yamato. As ordered by Nagisa, they go to challenge Loveless to a second match. In the process, the two zero pairs come face to face. Soubi wakes up in time to have a quick emotional moment with Ritsuka, and they agree to the fight.
Episode 10: NAMELESS
Yamato comes to Ritsuka's school and talks him into going for coffee with her by talking about Seimei, who she says it's good Ritsuka is not like. He spills coffee on her. She jumps up, and then goes to clean it off. While there, we see flashbacks of her early time with Kouya, and there is an interspersed phonecall between Soubi and Ritsu-sensei. This collectively reveals (to the viewer) that the zero girls defeated the boys by temporarily switching Sacrifices, and that Yamato was willing to use such reckless tactics because the zero mark is fading from her chest due to genetic engineering bugs. On their way to the fight that evening, Ritsuka tells Soubi he thinks Yamato can feel pain, and to use that in the fight. Eventually Soubi does cause Yamato to cry out, revealing to Kouya that Yamato's zero qualities are fading. Soubi tries to finish them off but Ritsuka stops him. Kouya abandons the battle, ending her role as a fighting unit. The girls decide not to die, but to start a new llife together. Meanwhile, Ritsuka wonders more about what Seimei was like as Soubi's master.
Episode 11: WARLESS
Kio shows up at Katsuko-sensei's office and reports on his worry about Soubi's behavior. He reports following Soubi, as Soubi followed Ritsuka, Yuiko, Yayoi, and Hitomi-sensei on a trip to Yokohama. They went to an amusement park, and it appeared that Ritsuka was kissing Yuiko in the ferris wheel car. Soubi runs over to take him on the ferris wheel himself, and Ritsuka gets furious that he's even there. Next we hear the tale from Hitomi's point of view. Her whole worry is that she's seeing Soubi everywhere. When they went to Chinatown (which isn't far from the amusement park in Yokohama) Soubi was finally nice to her and she was happy. At last we get the tale from Ritsuka's perspective. It turns out he and Yuiko were just trying to catch a butterfly, and she stumbled. Later, when they rode the boat to Chinatown, Kio told Ritsuka that he hadn't liked Seimei's effect on Soubi, but that Ritsuka seemed to be good for him. In Chinatown, Ritsuka had such a good time with everyone that he forgot to take pictures. He finally learned how to accept being liked, and liking others.
Episode 12: ENDLESS
Ritsuka is invited by Yuiko to play games at Yayoi's house. He notices something mysterious- a location and time for a net game that looks like the letters and numbers in the note he got from Sleepless. Without contacting Soubi Ritsuka concentrates on the game, and is suddenly overcome by drowsiness. A hand gently pats the sleeping Ritsuka's head. And as though ushered in by that hand, Ritsuka sees...
