Through personal experience, I can can say that the type of wing you want comes with the type of style your character has.

This character has been specially drawn to look cute, so there is not a great amount of detail on the wings.

This character is far more mature to view, she looks more grown up than the previous, and notice the detail on the clothes, hair and face. There is far more detail, so you must have a pair of detailed wings to match.
Wings follow however much detail you've put in to the rest of the character. Dont draw a really simple character and give her massive wings with huge detail on every feather, as well as if you draw a detailed character with folds in the clothes and everything, a simple pair of wings will not suffice.
