I don't know where I am right now, but I am writing this out in order that someone may know that I am alive and well. I don't know exactly what happened, but one day I was at home sleeping, I had been at a party and I guess I had a fairly good time. Next thing I knew I woke up in the back of a car. Someone, a man, a woman, I am not really sure who or what, took me to a building and left me here.

It is in this building that I am writing this note on a paper that was left here. I can hardly see so I don't know what the writing is like, but I hope that someday somehow someone will get the note and know that I am alive and well. Well, alive at least. I miss my friends. I miss my brothers and my sister. I miss everyone and I hope they are all doing well.

Maybe somehow someone will find me.... please.

A note by Sylas' hand found in the street.

Avani skips along the street, holding onto Silvia's hand. Sudddenly, she sees a small scrap of paper, quivering from the wind, on the ground a few feet ahead of her. With a small cry of "Mommy!" she lets go of Silvia's hand and runs to the paper, picking it up and reading it, or at least trying to.

After a minute of trying to decipher the writing, Avani gets frustrated and tugs on Silvia's sleeve, and holds the paper up to her. Silvia smiles and indulges her by reading it. As she gets farther down the paper, a worried look comes onto her face, and by the end of the paper, her hand is shaking.

"A-Avani, where did you get this?" Silvia asks in a shakey voice.

Avani looks up at her, a puzzled expression on her face. "I just saw it on the ground. What does it say?" She tugs on Silvia's sleeve again, and she slowly reads the note again, out loud this time, for the benefit of her daughter.

As she gets to the last line, 'maybe somehow someone will find me. . . please,' Avani looks up at her mom. "We have to help him!"

Silvia shakes her head slowly. "Even if I said yes, there's nothing we can do for him. We have no way of finding him. This is the knd of thing we sould take to the police. We'll let them take care of it." She pockets the note, and takes Avani's hand again and starts walking.

When she feels a tug on her arm, she stops, looks back, and sees that Avani hasn't moved a step.

"Avani, come on honey, we have to go. We'll stop by the police department on our way home. We can't do anything for Sylas."

Avani reluctantly continues walking, but her little mind is working furiously. If Silvia won't help, then I guess I'll go rescue Sylas on my own. . .

Several hours later, having received numerous worried looks from Silvia, Avani goes up to her room and pulls out her small bag and throws it on the bed. She throws a doll in the bag, a set of clothes, a flashlight, and a compass.

Strapping the bag onto her back, she creeps downstairs into the kitchen and proceeds to raid the pantry for dry foods. She thought of leaving a note, but since she couldn't read, let alone write, she just left a small flower on the counter.

Walking to the front hall, she reaches into the jar on the table that held spare change and a few dollars. Avani reaches in and takes several bills and numerous coins, and stuffs them in her bag. Looking around one last time at her house, she turns and opens the door, walking out into the sunlight.

She walks down the path leading up to her house, and she walks slowly, her head down, as she plods towards town, the crumpled note written by Sylas in her hand. She jsut realizes that she has no clue what she's going to do, as she has no idea where Sylas could possibly be.

Avani stops and thinks, and she decides that she might as well try and go back to the place that she found the note. Keeping her head down as she walks, she doesn't see the various sympathetic looks she's getting from the passerby, mainly the women, as she walks alone with her bag on her back.

~*~

Silvia sits on the couch watching TV. She was worried about Avani, since she hadn't heard a word from the child since they got back from town. She gets up from the couch, and softly walks up the steps into Avani's room. Gently knocking on the door, she only hears silence, and she pushes the door open.

The room is empty, a drawer in Avani's dresser remains open, and she notices Avani's favorite doll is missing. Oh, no. Oh, please, no. She runs back out, the door slamming into the wall, and runs into the kitchen, looking for the crumpled note they found on the street.

It was missing.

On the counter lay a small, delicate white rose.

~*~

Avani reaches the spot where she found the note, and stands near the stoplight, looking around hopelessly.

The darkness was crushing, its weight tangable to the boy that loved the sunlight so much. He couldn't see anything unless the doors were open, and even then the light hardly filtered back to him at all. The people in the other room spoke in silent voices about what they were going to do with him, and how they would make a fortune selling the little angel boy.

Sylas obviously wasn't all that thrilled at the idea of being sold, he knew that it was something that needed to be stopped. How could he though, tied as he was in one place, the ropes not only thick but seeming to be centered with some kind of flexible wire that he couldn't get through. The idea of somehow trying to remove his hand had crossed his mind... no not crossed, it lingered there.

Family, friends, loved ones and even people that made his life hard and painful, he missed them all. They had never done something like this to him. The note he had managed to get out was long gone, time having passed and him being unsure if it made it into hands that could do any good. For all he knew it had been found, yet the people hadn't commented.

Hope was all he had at this point. Hope, hunger and fear.

Avani stands near the spotlight, trying to work her little mind furiously. She eventually decides to ask the people walking around her if they've seen Sylas.

She hesitantly grabs the jacket sleeve of a young man passing by. He looks down irritably, and Avani seems to lose her voice. He stares at her for a second, then shakes her off his sleeve and keeps walking.

Avani looked at the man's retreating back, then turned around and spotted a yong woman, and again grabs her sleeve. This time she manages to stammer her question to the woman.

"Um, e-excuse me, b-but have you seen a little boy? H-he's taller than me, with blue eyes and blonde hair. . ." She trailed off, seeing the puzzled expression of the woman. "No, sorry, I haven't," she said briskly, then walked off.

Avani stomps her foot in frustration, and the small sound attracts the attention of a sweet looking old man in a newspaper stand nearby. "Hey now, what's with the temper? Life can't be that bad for you, you're still young. For me on the other hand, it's been a damn nuisance since my back gave out, and this newsstand isn't helping any either. . ." he said with a kind smile to Avani.

"Now come over here, tell me what you need, and I'll see if I can help any," he said with another smile.

Avani found herself trusting the old man, and shyly walked forward. "I-I'm looking for a friend of mine, his name is Sylas. He's a bit taller than me, he has blue eyes, and blonde hair. . . I-I think, something bad might have happened to him." she said, her eyes starting to tear up. She handed him the crumpled note she had found, and the old man read it, his eyes scanning the paper several times before he looked up.

"Well. . ." he started, and Avani's hopes immediately rose. "I've been here all day, and I haven't seen anyone matching your description." Avani, crestfallen, started to turn and walk away when the man's voice stopped her. "But Frank here was on duty yesterday, so he might've seen something. Hold on, let me go ask him." The man turned and their were some quiet voices talking, and Avani heard her description of Sylas being repeated.

The man turned back, and he had a smile on his face. "Good news, kiddo! Frank says he saw the kid yesterday at noon, and he knows the general direction they went in. He said he's willing to take you, if you'd like."

Avani was a little bit hesitant about getting in the car with 'Frank,' remembering her mother telling her to never get a ride with strangers. But she felt that the situation warranted it, so she nodded. A middle-aged man came into sight in the newsstand, and he gave her a warm smile.

"I have my car in the parking lot, I'll go get it and bring it around." Then he opened the side door, and dashed to the sign saying 'Parking.'

"Don't worry, kiddo, Frank's alright, he'll take you where you need to go," the man said, reassuring her. "Oh, and by the way, my name is Paul."

Avani smiled, extending a small, bark covered hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Paul. I'm Avani," she said with a slight curtsy after shaking his hand.

There was a honk, and a metallic blue Nissan drove around the corner, with the man, 'Frank,' in the driver's seat waving. He pulled alongside the curb and put his flashers on while Avani got in.

The car ride was a quiet one, mainly Frank playing soft rock from the radio and humming to himself. He stopped the car about 15 minutes after starting, and said, "This is as far as I saw them go. I'm sorry I can't help you anymore, but make sure to come by and see Paul once you find your friend. I think he'd appreciate it."

Avani nodded, and opened the car door, shutting it behind her and watching as the Nissan drove away.

Avani looked mournfully at the crumpled note she held in her hand, and looked around at her current area. It was a disreputable looking place, and there were various warehouses with many broken windows standing around, looming above the shy little banir.

She looked around again, thinking of what she could possibly do, and spotted a staircase going underground, with a man standing at the top of it, looking as if he was guarding something.

Oh no, Avani thought. What if Sylas is down there? What could I possibly do? How am I supposed to get in there? Her mind wracked with thoughts, plans, and questions, she went to the wall of the closest factory, keeping the staircase in sight, and just sat down, staring at the man and the staircase.

((sorry it's short, I have to go in like 2 minutes. . .))

Avani rested her head on her drawn-up knees, plotting and thinking of how she could get in. This definitely wasn't meant for kindergardeners. . . she thought to herself. Wait. . . won't the guard change?? Her little mind thinking as rapidly as it could, she was suddenly struck with a brilliant plan. I'll just sneak in when they change the guard!!

Giggling to herself and mentally congratulating herself on her new plan, she sat back and waited, hoping that the guard change would be soon.

~*~

Avani had dozed off, but woke up suddenly, and stared at the staircase, noticing something different. She thought to herself, then realized that the guard wasn't there. She didn't think, she just stood up, grabbed her pack, and slung it over her shoulder. Not looking around, she ran as fast as she could and dashed down the stairway, her breath catching in her throat as she descended into the enveloping darkness.

((mehehe, and the suspense rises pirate ))

Sylas knelt in the dark room, hearing strange sounds all around him. From the smells that he could not recognize he was in some kind of warehouse. Oil mingled with sawdust and shaveings, and with that came other strange smells of metal and sulfer. He didn't like it at all and he balled himself up into a corner. Most things didn't bother the rather shy boy, but the darkness being around him for so long was sapping his will and strength. He wanted to cry but he couldn't find the tears.

He could hear talking in the other room, speak of getting him something to eat before getting ready to ship him off. What were they planning, were they getting ready to sell him to someone. Sylas deffinitely didn't want to become someone's slave or something but it seemed that was what they had in mind. They were going to ship him off like everything else in this place.

Getting up he started to walk around, his hands out before him as he felt along crates and boxes that were placed all over the room. They hadn't been back in there in a while and so he couldn't remember the placement of where the boxes were.

"Hey, Gino, go check on the boy in the back.. Fritz is going to be showing up soon."

The voice came to him from somewhere else, and Sylas dove into a crate to hide. He just wanted to go home.[/color

Avani, having gotten into the underground complex unnoticed, hid behind a wall, now wondering on where they would hide Sylas, and thinking of how she would get there.

She shrugged inwardly, just deciding to follow the walls and hope not to get caught. She pressed herself against the wall, glad for once for her dark skin, for in the dim lighting one wouldn't be able to see her unless they looked really hard. She crawled along the wall, until she came to a three way intersection. Standing in one of the available directions, she stopped, puzzling over which way to go.

Deciding with the right, she continued along, narrowly avoiding getting stepped on by a humongously tall man. She paused, watching him as he retreated from her view, as he went the way she hadn't, and thought she would try to follow him after she tried this path. Turning back around, she continued on, wrinkling her nose as occasional unpleasant smells came floated by it.

She stopped when she saw a man just standing in the hallway, leaning against the wall. What caught Avani's eye was that he was standing next to a door, guarding it, seemingly. This must be it! Avani thought. This must be where they're hiding Sylas!

But her hopes immediately crashed, as she was fairly certain that the guard-change trick she used last time wouldn't work. She slumped against the wall, sitting on the floor and thinking of how one little elemental could possibly save her friend.

Avani looked up at the sound of the door entering, and she stood up, thinking of a rush-in as her only possibilty. Shrugging off her fears and apprehensions, at least for the moment, she ran out of the shadows, ignoring the two men's exclamations of startlement, and ran to the door, pulling on the iron handle, and teh door slowly opened with a dull screech.

The men hadn't moved, apparently still in shock at the sight of a little girl, an elemental no less, down in their 'base.' Finally opening the door wide enough for her to slip through, she dashed into the cell, her heart pounding, looking in the dirty, dank room, at the various boxes, searching for the one shape she came here for. The dim light flooded into the room, exposing the tops of many hardwood boxes, and one small, pale, huddled shape. . .

When the ability to react finally settled in on the men they slammed the door down hard, now trapping both kids inside. Yeah, they were a bit upset that there was now another little brat in there to deal with, but they were also quite happy at the chance to double the amount of money they would get for them. One kid selling made profit, two kids being sold made double the profit.

Inside the strange warehouse area Sylas continued to hide, not wanting to reveal where he was since he could now hear someone moving around. What if it was one of the men?

The small angel trembled and hid his face, trying to muffle the start of sobs riseing in his chest. Lifting his head he noticed that the figure that suddenly was very visible to him. (since his hideing place didn't seem as good as he thought it was) Looking at the figure he tried to figure out who it was. "D-don't.. h-hurt me..."

Avani''s startled raections caused her to rush at the door a moment too late, and it was slammed in her face. Turning back to where she could have sworn she saw a pale form, she heard a small, strangled sob. At the sudden sound of a soft, stuttering voice, she rushes forward, only to stumble on an invisible, or nearly, box, crashing to the floor.

Slowly pulling herself into a kneeling position, she clenches her small hands in her lap atop her knees, and she feels tears at the thought that now both of them were stuck. She shook her head, and quickly wiped her eyes.

"I could never. . . hurt a friend. . ." she said quietly, "Sylas. . ." At this, she burst into tears, curling up over her knees. "I tried. . . I tried so hard, Sylas. . . but what else can I do? I ran away from home, left my mother, and these two kind men who helped me, but it was all for nothing!" Her sobs wracked her whole body, her body visibly shaking. "What am I supposed to do now? I tried, and I failed!"

Someone else was in the prison with him. Sylas had no idea how long he had been in the room, and how he was going to get out, but he now knew that he wasn't alone. Someone else was near and he had to get to them. Crawling out of his hideing place, the pale angel moved across the floor, doing his best not to disturb anything that would cause Gino or Fritz to come back to look for their precious cargo.

"Who is here..?" He whispered softly, his breath hitching in his chest as he moved slowly toward the sound of the crying. "Avani?" How did he know it was her? He wasn't sure how he could be certain, but he did know. "Avani.. please, where are you?"

The thought that his friend was so close, but unreachable was getting to him more than the thought that he was going to be sold. If he could just get to her side, he wouldn't feel so lost in here. If he could just get to her side he would be able to at least calm down and think.

Then he ran into a box. The crate above him started to wobble but the darkness in the warehouse kept him from seeing the box as it started to lean toward his slender frame. "Avani?"
