Oz hadn't been to the lake yet. Nearly two months since making the mistake of stepping off that helicopter and he still hadn't seen all of the Island. But its size was incredibly deceptive, and he began to wonder if all of the Island had been explored yet. He'd purposefully packed his swimming shorts into a small duffel bag, just in case the whim struck him to go swimming.

But since it was wonderfully sunny and pleasantly warm, as was common in this tropical clime, he scrambled onto a bank and laid back, sunning himself for a short while.

The Sabin imposed lock-in over, Sayuri was outside. Fresh air in her lungs, the scent of water and mud got stronger as she neared the Lakeside. She was alone after all, and as she looked out from her hair that she had left down today, she wondered if the squid guy was there.
Her tail hung from the slit in the back of her yukata, and her flippered feet moved with care, picking her way along in a fashion that would hopefully stop her from falling over.
'Oh...' the small word slipped out as she saw the one person she had either hoped not to see..or really wanted to see. There was nowhere to hide and she imagined he would have heard the slap of her flippers by now. She turned, hoping to pad off before he did turn around.

"Where do you think you're going?" he asked with that playful tone.

He had indeed heard someone approaching, and upon hearing her little utterance and glancing quickly from the side of his half-open eyes, it wasn't hard to recognise Sayuri's delicate form and demure posture. Although, something seemed a little off. He couldn't quite pinpoint it.

Oz lurched himself up to a sitting position, reaching for his t-shirt and slipping it back on. He knew she was a little uncomfortable around nakedness.

'Away..' she muttered, gathering up the skirt of her yukata and trying to hurry. She bit her bottom lip that had begun to tremble, the images - seared into her mind and replaying from when she had last seen him.
Her feet wouldnt co-operate though and she slipped, catching a patch of moist grass and falling to her knees. Her hair covered her face and her hands were muddied but she attempted to push herself up onto her feet again.

"But I've put my shirt back on now," he said, laughing, heaving himself to his feet.

He began to walk casually over to her but stopped suddenly. Was she...running away from him? He'd never known her to try walking hurriedly with her flippers, since she'd always tried so hard to walk gracefully with them.

"Sayuri? Whats wrong?" he asked with a furrowed brow as he jogged to her side, offering to help her up.

Sayuri shrunk away from him, still trying to stand on her own. She couldnt quite make it so she sat, shaking, trying not to look at him. If she did she would hear the..noises - see the moving bodies in her mind again.
What was wrong? She wasnt sure how to even begin to put it.
'Why Oz not like me?' she finally managed, trying not to cry. Bad enough that Sabin had finally told her in no uncertain words that he wanted nothing from her, now she had to face the one person she thought had liked her, after what he'd done.

What was wrong with her? Why was she shaking so much? And why did she recoil at his touch? Something wasn't right.

"What? What made you think I didn't like you?" he asked her, quite baffled himself.

He kneeled down so that he was at least close to her eye level, fidgeting around so that he could actually see her face, despite her determination not to look at him.

Maybe what she'd seen had been false? He didnt seem to know what was wrong. Or maybe he really didnt care.
'I saw! I saw you with white woman!' Sayuri exclaimed, her voice edged with hurt and she covered her face.
'I saw..you have no feeling. No one have feeling.'

OH s**t! How could she have seen!?

Whilst his little mind tried to battle with just how Sayuri had found out and actually managed to see it, his physical appearance didn't do much to deny Sayuri's claim. He remained facing her, but couldn't bring eye contact with hers, and his bulky body resigned to a sitting position now. He rubbed the back of his thick neck with his large hand.

"That...didn't mean anything..." he said, at first trying to think carefully about his answer, then plumping for the first thing that came to his mind.

Sayuri dabbed at her eyes with her yukata sleeve, trying to compose herself before she faced him again. Her tail coiled around her, the fin part gently curling over, betraying her despondent mood.
'How you say that? You were..rolling. No clothes. You sleep. You look happy.' she said, sounding more like a kicked puppy each time she spoke.
'She make Oz happy.'

Ugghhhh, he hated to see women cry, and even worse...this was because of him. Oz looked about as hurt as she did, chewing his lip until it bled slightly.

"Honestly Sayuri...sex is supposed to feel good. Sex doesn't always equal love," he began, that slightly aggrivated sting slipping into his voice. "Just because I slept with her doesn't mean I love her."

He had to compose himself for a moment, a part of him quite angry that he had to justify his actions. But considering Sayuri's sheltered life, she wouldn't have known that men could be like this.

He really should have told her sooner.

'I do not. I not know why it hurt then,' Sayuri looked at him, eyes red rimmed, tears pooling in the lids.
'It hurt here when I saw.' she placed a hand over her heart. It was because she had left him that day. Because she hadnt done the same.
'But you not love me. And you - voice. You are angry..at me?'
Her eyes closed and the tears ran down her face.
'Danna does not have feeling for me. He not want me. I wanted to be yours.'

"I'm not angry!...I'm...just...frustrated I can't say...this right," he began, the semblance of a growl in his throat.

Oz sighed heavily. He knew what he meant inside his head, but the only way to get it out was to get it past his mouth, where something seemed to be getting lost in translation.

But...why should he be explaining himself? He'd been able to do this before and never give it a second thought. So why now? Why the huge gaping hole of guilt in his innards right now. Sayuri had forsaken her Danna for him, she'd been willing to go against the very fibre of her duties...

"I'm...I'm sorry, Sayuri," he began after a contemplative silence. The excuse of 'I'm just a man and following my hormones' fell far too short to explain himself.

"But I don't care for her. I care for you," he said, a gentle smile forming as he reached out to brush a tear away on her cheek.

Sayuri shrank away a little at the tone and the odd noise he had made. She couldnt simply get up and run away because her legs would not support her now, she was shaking too much. Her head lowered and she ran her fingers over the scales on her tail, trying to distract herself, as she waited to see if he would speak more.

When he apologised, she relaxed a small amount, and she looked up to him again when he touched her cheek.
'Oz-san..' she whispered. She turned her face so that her mouth came near his hand and she kissed his fingers.
'I do not want hurt.'
Her whole posture pleaded it. Don't hurt me anymore. Dont hurt me again.

Oz melted at Sayuri's kiss, quite ready to just lay down all pride and principles and let her have her way with him. That is, if she still wanted to. He wanted to lean in, to hold her, to reassure her.

"I didn't want to hurt you Sayuri," he said, voice soft and honest. "I can't explain what I did, all I can do is ask you to forgive me."

Had Sayuri ever been put in a position of such power? She could choose what to do - break his heart and make him work for forgiveness, or trust him from now on.
