A giant octopus?!

User Image
The giant octopus is one of 90 species of octopodes. This charming mollusk is probably the world's smartest invertebrate, as well as one of the most talented animals you'll ever see. It can change the color and texture of its skin within a second, squeeze through spaces the size of its beak, and figure out how to surpass obstacles to get to its food. Also, it can squirt ink, regenerate lost limbs, and go out of water for up to half an hour at a time- octopodes have been known to crawl up into fishing boats to catch an easy meal! They mainly eat fish, crustaceans, and clams/oysters.

Many thanks to Chalda for correcting me. ^_^

User Image

What's Sylvest like, then?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Now that Sylvest has become a healthy child, he's really come out of his shell (unlike his cousin, the nautilus)! This kid is now cutely energetic, and able to have a geniune interest in anything you talk about. His confidence has also boosted quite a bit- which might make him a little egotistical and.. well, overconfident sometimes. But when a challenging task is set in front of him, he's able to put aside that facet of himself and concentrate like no other.

Speaking of tasks, the task that helped him grow gave him a bit of a penchant for cooking. One of his favorite things is chopping onions- he's more or less made a sport out of it, and even asks poor Mouse to time him sometimes. And when he's making a meal, you can bet your name that it'll have some sort of marine creature in it. The Mighty Kraken is all about salty seafood, taking an oyster over a piece of candy any day of the week. It's without a doubt that he'll become quite the perfectionist with meal preparations.

As for his soul-oriented abilities... Obviously, he is a very good swimmer, and he has complete control over his octopus arms (possibly more so than his human ones). The arms can also take on a limitless variety of colors, patterns, and textures. He'll often make a little show out of it for people he meets outside home. Sylvest can also breathe underwater, but this has a dark side to it- he needs exposure to water for several hours per day. Otherwise he can get dehydrated and exhausted.

Mouse has also seen him trying to perfect his ink-spitting technique... friends, acquaintances, and foes alike should beware!

Sylvest's entries shall appear in dark blue.

User ImageName: Mouse Pachinkorelli

Gender: Female

Age: Early 20's

On some levels, Mouse is as her name implies: she's diminutive in size and nonthreatening in appearance with a bit of a high-pitched voice, but that either fails to be an obstacle or turns out to be an advantage when she wants to get into (or out of) something. Growing up in Aekea taught her to be resourceful and try to stay calm and collected in stressful situations; she sees the mind as her greatest asset, not having much in the way of physique or the brand of good looks that's socially acceptable for young women these days. She can, however, turn timid at the drop of a hat, particularly when a situation starts to get violent or when a problem presents itself that she can't solve with what she has on hand. Although she has a deep hate for hometown nowadays, she still carries the Aekean trademark love for machines. This shows the most readily in her car- it's a bit of a behemoth in size, and Mouse is clearly proud at how she dug it out of a junkyard for cheaper than the dirt it was covered in and fixed it up herself. One can probably imagine how much she'd like to see the machines in the Lab at work.

Why the girl insists on wearing so much green all the time is really anyone's guess. It could be out of a strange brand of environmentalism and love for the outdoors that she developed quickly after moving to Barton, though it's more likely that she just woke up one morning and decided to green-theme her wardrobe just to see how long she could keep up with it before getting bored and returning her attire to normal (or picking another color). Having a bit of fun in life is of great importance to her, to the point where she almost has a phobia of being bored for extended periods of time. If one could work up the nerve to ask for what she would like in a significant other, it's likely that one her answer would be along the lines of "someone who can keep things interesting, and maybe who's willing to endure a long drive to the beach in so we enjoy a long walk on one now and again."

Mouse's entries shall appear in black.

Reliisha is Mouse's very first companion in Gaia, and a great ride before she reached an anthro form. The two were a great team delivering letters for the Eoghan Slenin postal service, and are sometimes still called upon to deliver a package or two. Since she had five children with her life companion, Horus, she's settled down a bit and has taken up a hobby of flying kites. The appearances that she makes will undoubtedly be fun, as she seems to have a knack for children.

Reliisha's entries shall appear in indigo.

Gingerbread is a Mozou that Mouse got around Christmas- thing is, she is quiet to the level of a proper Victorian-era woman. As such, Mouse and Sylvest often forget she's even there, but she doesn't seem to mind much. Sometimes she spends time away from the house, though, presumably to go to operas or something along those lines.

Unbeknownst to her folks, many of her trips are out to try and make a living as a burlesque dancer, and when not hiding behind the ruse of a polite woman with a shy giggle can be extremely provocative.

User Image
Gyiyg is a.... psychic dragon, and the obligatory household member with a penchant for hating everything. His hobbies mainly consist of putting crazy ideas in Mouse's head and seeing if she'll carry them out. Hilarity-- or injury, or a combination of the two-- often ensues.

Sylvest met Circe at the Eden Project HQ when he was still a leaf. They didn't exactly break the ice- at first Circe was convinced that Sylvest was his court jester, and then the pompous peacock kid became covered in ink! Hopefully they'll get along later on.

Madeline and Sylvest had a brief encounter at the HQ when the octopus lad was still a potted leaf. He was quite scared of her, but thinks that Circe is much more terrifying.

During a small beach party at which Sylvest finally emerged from his leaf, the octopus lad made friends with this primped beauty (Dante) who is actually quite nice under her superstar exterior. They even built a sandcastle together!

Sylvest seems to look up to Teagan a bit, but questions his taste for sugar cane. But despite one bad experience involving the sweet plant, it looks like these two have the potential to become pretty good friends.

Belinda was a very bored toddler at the Eden Project HQ, and Sylvest was one to help. She seems to really like his ability to change color- willing to make demands up to the point of sheer exhaustion for the boy!

Evarobby was encountered briefly at the HQ, and then again at the local aquarium- where Sylvest saved the fellow Eden from drowning! This invoked a huge boost in the octopus lad's confidence, and it would be imagined that they can be good friends.

Sylvest met Karoko very briefly at the beach, and again for a longer time at the Eden Project HQ. They had a pretty friendly exchange... Mighty Kraken is fascinated by her ability to make broken things work, and also promised to teach her how to cook and swim someday.

I've been hovering around the Eden Project HQ for a while now- the mixture of human and nonhuman traits is an amazing subject indeed! I love studying them... but I never thought I'd be chosen to take care of one. I recieved a leaf today. Apparently, it has the soul of a giant octopus sealed inside of it. What kind of magic would that be...?

Still, this is really difficult to comprehend. Rather annoying that I can't wrap my brain around this, truthbetold. I've seen more than enough evidence. I've heard the stories. I've even watched Feather, a good friend of mine, raise one! Even after all of this, I find it really difficult to believe that a child, of all things, is going to somehow emerge from this little green scrap of a tree. I guess it'll be easier to believe when I see the transformation, or birth, or whatever with my own eyes.

I'm getting this feeling from the leaf, actually... the little guy feels like a bundle of nerves. Very shy. I hope it'll warm up to me eventually. At least he finds some comfort in submerging himself in my glass of water.

EDIT: Oh, I can't believe I almost forgot! If this leaf is going to become a child, it's going to need a name. I'm so scatterbrained, especially with this Irish drinking song pounding out the inside of my head. Called "My Brother Sylvest".

...

Hmm!

I think Sylvest would do nicely, actually. The leaf seems to like it, too. So Sylvest will be his designation from now on! Glad that's out of the way. Now to go enjoy some homemade guacamole.

Okay. I don't know whether to categorize this as "weird" or "really annoying".

I get myself a glass of water. Sylvest appears out of nowhere and promptly dunks himself into the liquid. So I get myself another glass- and there he is. Sitting in my water. He doesn't even drink it, for crying out loud. He just... kinda floats there, and wiggles a bit. Like he's so proud that he's ruining my daily water intake. I should reprimand him... but he's already so shy. I don't want the guy to be terrified of me.

However, I think his behaviors make a bit of sense. Sylvest has the soul of a sea creature, so he would be fond of water, right? The only mystery that remains is why he likes to dunk himself in any water that's closer to me. I should be careful: who knows what might ensue if I start boiling water for instant ramen! Starting today, I'm going to establish some rules. I hope he'll listen.

Hah! Already I've been sucked into treating this little leaf like more than just a leaf. I pray that someone will shoot me if I start making clothes for him or something. Though, when he becomes a child, it would be quite amusing if he had a sailor uniform or pirate costume. The little guy doesn't seem like he would be much of a pirate, though. Maybe one of those stuttering lackeys at the bottom of the totem pole, but not a full-fledged thief of the seas.

Maybe I'll invite Feather and Alex over for lunch sometime. Making some friends for Sylvest before he's "born" would probably do wonders for his self confidence. Besides, I'm sure Feather will have plenty of useful advice for me. Even though it seems that our Edens are complete opposites.

Slightly nervous, Lis left a small, misshapen package on Mouse's doorstep. (She wasn't a very good gift-wrapper, that was certain.) She wedged a small note under the door, and scampered off on her bicycle.

Quote:
Hi, Mouse!

Congratulations on obtaining your new Eden. I thought Sylvest might like this when he grows up; I hope he enjoys it!

P.S. It's even water-proof wink

Summary of Group Roleplay

I went into the Eden Project HQ today in hopes that I could get some tips on how to raise him. I also hoped that a bit of social interaction would help Sylvest with his inane shyness, but no progress yet. But thanks to Lena (who seems to be the caretaker of a rather pretty Eden who looks like a daisy), I did discover that he has a taste for apple juice. Which I would imagine is rather odd- octopodes are carnivores, for crying out loud! But I shouldn't complain... maybe the sugars in apple juice will help him grow faster. I'll go buy a bit of it at the store next time I go shopping for groceries.

I conversed with DiYanni, Bird, and Feather, who seemed pretty enthusiastic and curious about Sylvest. He didn't like all of the attention, though- tried his best to hide from everyone. Silly little guy. It was good that I went up there, though- DiYanni got me thinking that I might want to invest in an aquarium tank. I hope I can find one that's large and cheap enough.

Also caught a glimpse of some of the other Edens, as well as Alex and Raven- I was a bit shocked to see that they were still toddlers, really. One would think that the two should have developed into healthy children by now. I do hope that nothing's wrong with them- they're both so charming, and I'm normally not too fond of small children. Surely they'll grow soon enough, and then when Sylvest finally emerges from that leaf we can have a little picnic at the park or something. Maybe I could invite DiYanni and Madeline, too: I think I saw that little arthopod-girl looking our way once or twice.

Right now as I'm writing this, I look at Sylvest floating there in my water again. He's all curled up and settled at the bottom, like he's sleeping. It's almost as if too much social interaction is both physically and mentally exhausting to him. Hopefully he'll break out of that shell when he's older, but I can't help but worry. He's definitely not the little sailor I imagined that he could be when I first got him.

Even with the window open to slightly cooler night air and the fan on at full blast, Mouse's bedroom was still as hot and stale as ever. It was amazing that she had managed to actually get to sleep. This must have been the hottest day and evening that she had ever experienced in her entire life. She had just managed to fall through the thin veil of unconsciousness just some fifteen minutes ago- the clock at her bedside showed in blocky, red digits that it was 3:41 AM.

Sylvest, on the other hand, was still restless. He was swishing around aimlessly in the pitcher of water at Mouse's bedside table. Perhaps he was drawing some sort of pattern, or maybe he was pacing around with concern for his guardian's well-being. Regardless of what his intentions were, his mood seemed to lighten considerably as the crackling, unpredictable summer rain started abruptly with a flash of lightning and a loud crash of thunder.

The rain pounded down mercilessly, spearing down the humidity that had been persisting for quite a few days with it. It was a great stroke of fortune that the wind was blowing away from the open window- Mouse certainly wouldn't have enjoyed waking up to a soaked living space.

Perhaps it was the sudden change in air pressure and temperature; maybe it was Sylvest exuding some degree of cheerfulness for the very first time. Regardless of the cause, the leaf's guardian was soon yanked into that marshy, foggy part of the mind where dreams- and the occassional nightmare- are concocted.

They were on... a ship? It seemed to be sinking into something that definitely wasn't the sea. And this vessel, instead of being made of steel plates and sails, was composed mainly of tree bark and enormous leaves. And who was "they", anyway? Mouse and Sylvest... were there other people there? Yes, there were. Sylvest was a fully-grown man, dressed like a sailor, though faceless. He was trying to say something to his guardian in a child's voice: she couldn't understand a word of it, but it seemed very important. Or perhaps it was the insignificant garble that always showed up in dreams, and it seemed like he was talking about something important because she imagined his voice to be more whispy; more subdued.

No- whatever Sylvest was talking about, it had some significance to it. He was gesturing towards the other people and insisting on something. Before Mouse could protest or ask anything, her surrogate son dove into the substance that the tree-ship was sinking in.

The teenage female woke up reluctantly and uneasily. She immediately looked at Sylvest, who at last decided not to shy away from her gaze. It was 7:28 in the morning, and the dream was already fading like the clouds up in the wet sky.

Wow. I still can't believe my luck:

I went shopping for groceries yesterday- I couldn't buy as much as usual because I'm running low on funds. Whoever did the bagging really sucked, since halfway home a few of my pears decided that it would be a good idea to fall out of my bag. I naturally chased my favorite fruit down the sidewalk like some sort of ninny. Lo and behold: the house that they stopped at was having a garage sale.

And there it was. A tank.

I don't know how many gallons it holds or whatever, but its measurements are about four feet by three feet; two and a half feet high. It should work for a little while... and it only cost me about 250 gold. And they even threw in a little cart-thing for free so I could actually get it home. They asked me why I wanted it... I couldn't say that it was for a child with the soul of an octopus, so I said that it was for tropical fish. So they also threw in a filter and a bucket of this "Artificial Ocean" stuff so the water would have livable saline levels.

I don't think I'll set it up quite yet, though. Besides, the thing is unbelievably filthy... I'm going to have to lug it outside and give it a good scrub. But at least I got something that'll work, if even for a little while. Hopefully Sylvest will be able to tolerate being out of water when he's born, too.

Kakui decided to leave the unbelievable heavy sack at the sidewalk. Considering how much she'd been taking out of it, she'd have thought it would be getting lighter rather than heavier. Checking the address she had written down, she carefully placed her gift and a note by the door before leaving with the bag dragging slowly behind her.

Quote:
Dear Mouse,

You probably don't know me, but I've been around the Eden Project HQ a few times while no one was there. After looking around, I've decided that I'd really like to get to know those involved, and what better way to meet people than through gifts?
I've heard that your Eden's one of the newest additions and I must say that I can't wait to see him when he grows. I'm sure he'll be quite adorable.

(I've also included something for him to hide in while he's still a leaf)

For once feeling quite content with himself, Sylvest twirled and swished around in the personalized glass that he had gotten just this morning. Mouse couldn't help but share the leaf's contenment- it seemed that he had finally become accustomed to his guardian and the household. Now he barely even flinched when she looked at him, which was a huge improvement from just a few short days ago. His guardian was quite proud... if one could feel pride for a leaf.

From an undeterminable distance to the northeast, a particular call was sounded. Many would have either ignored it or wondered what the hell it is, but it was very familiar to Mouse. An Eoghan was coming her way; more specifically, it was Reliisha. Smiling inwardly, Mouse counted down: "Five... four... three... two..."

"Mooouuuse!" a purple, griffin-like creature called from outside the window, causing Sylvest to jerk in surprise. "It's so good to see you!"

"Likewise, Rel. The door's open," Mouse replied. A few seconds later, Reliisha arrived in the kitchen in her anthro guise. Immediately, her attention was drawn to Sylvest. Accustomed to Mouse's gaze but not to anybody else's, he tried to hide behind the yellow octopus decal on his glass.

"Oh, is that...?" Rel asked, unsure of how to finish her question.

"Yep, that's Sylvest. He's only a leaf now, and a paranoid one at that- stop hiding; Reliisha's our friend, dammit. But if I'm right, he should somehow become a child soon," Mouse explained.

The Eoghan nodded, remembering her mate Horus's personal accounts. "Yeah... aww, he's scared of me?" She inched closer towards the glass. "Come on, now. I'm not going to hurt you."

Sylvest refused to move from his hiding place. This was going to take a more work than Mouse originally thought...
