Among the forgotten lies Mnemosyne, her existance recognized by neither the very people who dreamed of her nor her siblings who shared their non-life with her. Memories of an era long since having faded into obscurity has at last surfaced with her reincarnation.

  ____{ N a m e }
"Melanie" is a traditional Greek name, albeit with a more contemporary spelling and pronunciation. It derives from the ancient Greek word μελαινα (melaina) meaning "Black, dark" -- and her guardians' reasons for choosing this name for her should be obvious.
It is traditionally pronounced, of course, Meh-lahn-nee; her guardians stubbornly pronounce it Mee-lah-nah. Melanie answers to either, as well as any other shortenings of her name: Mel and Lain. Being a baby, she doesn't seem to have a preference one way or another.
Her true name, Mnemosyne (Mνημοσύνη; nee-MAH-sin-ee), "Remembrance", is unknown to everyone except those who explicitly knew her in her past life. In private, some refer to her as "Nemo", an explicit diminutive of her full name as in this form she is not truly the River she once was. Nemo also, ironically enough, happens to mean "No one" in Latin, a fact that none of the Greek spirits are actually aware of.
____{ Basic Information } date of birth» February 12, 2007 age» baby origin» the Greek Underworld river Mnemosyne skintone» extremely dark, black eye color» piercing aqua hair color» liquid blue occupation» a mystery likes» sleeping, being spoken to, bath time neutral» everything else dislikes» the spotlight or hot seat, being ignored favorite colors» neutral tones favorite foods» strained peas favorite music» lullabies essentially» it is a mystery
____{ Personality } A very quiet and somber child who spends most of her time sleeping or lethargically watching things. She does not seem to have very much strength and, if she is indeed curious about the new world around her, she does not do much to act upon any urges to explore.
For someone who caused quite a fuss with her birth, Melanie does not seem to much enjoy the attention; she is most content alone in her guardians' care, perhaps with one or two visitors, and does not make much demands for attention.
____{ Physical Attributes }
Her skin is dark -- very dark, and colorless, lacking even the color of the night. By sharp contrast, her eyes are a bright and piercing aqua, and her hair long, watery blue ringlets that seem somehow unaffected by gravity, instead floating as if she were permanently suspended in water.
Little rings of water gravitate around her wrists, unable to be caught or captured by any other means; so far it is unknown as to what purpose these serve.
She has faint markings -- one elaborate but unknown symbole scribed below her right eye, and other rhinestone-like markings speckling her cheeks and forehead.

As a baby, Melanie predictably has not shown any explicit displays of power yet. It has been suggested that she may very well never be able to use the true extent of her power, considering the pact she had made with Matilda to be reborn.

an old, inaccurate human-made map of the Underworld The Greek Underworld -- referred to also as the Hades, after its Lord -- is thought to lay below the earth and beyond the horizon. It is believed that when a person died, his or her vital breath or psyche left the body to enter the palace of Hades, king of the dead. The psyche once it had fled the body existed merely as a phantom image, perceptible but untouchable. The wall separating the living from the dead was virtually impenetrable. People still alive could concievably wander into the Underworld -- but those who did never returned.
Within the Underworld lay the great pit of Tartarus, as deep as heaven is high, where the Abyss lurks; those spirits judged to be damned for all eternity were thrown into this prison, falling for nine days and nine nights. At the very bottom runs together all the rivers, oceans, and streams of the world.
The land of the dead itself, ruled by the god Hades, and called the house or domain of Hades, is composed of various fields -- most notably the Fields of Asphodel, and the Stygia, Acherontia, and Lethian Fields. Souls not judged to go anywhere else wander through these Fields until reaching the Lethe, where they may drink from its waters to obtain a tabula rasa reincarnation.
The Elysian Islands reside in the Underworld as well, ruled by Cronus, where all the great heroes of myth still recognized and worshipped by the world above reside. The actual Elysian Fields -- Paradise -- ruled by Rhadamanthys is where all the virtuous dead and initiates in the ancient Mysteries were sent to dwell.
The five rivers of Hades are Acheron (the river of sorrow), Cocytus (lamentation), Phlegethon (fire), Lethe (forgetfulness) and Styx (hate), which forms the boundary between upper and lower worlds. Mnemosyne is only mentioned in whispers Aboveground between those deemed deserving of the knowledge.

____{ R i v e r } Certain Mystery cults speak of a twin river to the Lethe (known as the River of Oblivion, from which all shades of the Underworld must drink in order to reincarnate; to take a single taste of its water was to immediately surrender one's memories and be wiped clean for one's new life.) Known as the Mnemosyne, drinking the waters of this river would, instead of leading to reincarnation, lead somehow to eternal life...
Beyond what little rumors exist, little is actually known about the Mnemosyne, and the river is not actually recognized as an 'official' one. Melanie, so far, is not volunteering any further information.

____{ S t y x } The tenth ring of Oceanus, with a tenth of the world-river's waters flowing through him, Styx surrounded the Underworld and was largely meant to keep the souls of the dead imprisoned and the undead away. Like his siblings, any physical contact with his waters would have deadly results; Styx in particular gave off plentiful, noxious mist that was meant to ward off any living visitors. It was rumoured that his waters could lend someone immortality, should that person be able to become submerged in the river and somehow survive.
Oaths sworn by the river Styx are binding by divinity; any of the gods pours a libation of his water and is forsworn, he or she would lie breathless for a year, never tastes Ambrosia and Nectar and would become spiritless and voiceless. After spending thus one year in sickness he or she would be cut off for nine years from the god's councils and feasts and could not return until the tenth year.
The River Styx itself was known as the River of Hate; Styx' daimon, the personification and goddess of the river, was the daughter of Oceanus.
Considered one of Mnemosyne's 'sisters', Styx has long since abandoned his mythological role as the river of hate and has been solidly up to no good for the past thousand years. Very little is known about his background since having emerged from the Underworld -- not as a River but as a rogue spirit -- or even how he has spent all his time, except probably not productively. It is only recently that he has even begun to acknowledge and display his own River heritage once more, with the rebirth of two certain girls.
Styx is very coarse and abrasive, caring little for all opinions and advice that are not his. Thankfully, he does know when to put up and shut up -- many, many years on the streets has taught him that -- but he nevertheless has an intrinsic overall wariness and dislike of all other people.
Perhaps his only redeeming factor is his sheer aversion to lying; he is absolutely truthful all of the time, even when it does not help his case to be so. And even when telling the truth, he never bothers to sugarcoat or lend any consideration to another person's feelings, which probably lands him in even more trouble than any falsehoods would. He takes promises and oaths very seriously, looking down on anyone who would break them, and never bothering to make any himself.
He is a creature of bad habit. He regularly chain smokes, drinks, gambles, and collects all sorts of junkish, mostly improper oddities that he leaves strewn around wherever he feels like. Nothing makes him happier than having good reason to loathe someone, though he is perfectly content to do so without. He also greatly likes other people's loathing as well -- not only directed towards himself but towards each other, as well; achieving this is a game to him with rules only he understands and regularly breaks.
To a person with absolutely no sixth sense, Styx looks innocuous enough; he has thick, wavy black locks that have the appearance of either being rarely washed or else often attacked with hair gel, often bound into a long low ponytail. His skin is a light olive, and his eyes are pale and narrow. He is rather tall and lanky, and may give off a sense of being oddly proportioned. Depending on the strength of the viewer's sixth sense, they may or may not see that his hair is perpetually damp and very definitely has a watery consistance at the ends, his skin slightly tinged purple as if deprived of oxygen, and notice a rather foul odor to him (that may otherwise be brushed off as cigarette smoke.)
His best friend and partner in crime is Acheron; he is simultaneously extremely overprotective of and completely bewildered by Melanie. Her sister, Lethe, is someone he likewise adores, fears, is disgusted by, and has absolutely no interest in.
____{ A c h e r o n } The second greatest river in the world, excelled only by Oceanus, is the Acheron -- the River of Woe. Acheron flows opposite Oceanus under desert places, and surfaces at many places in the world into above-ground rivers and lakes bearing his name. Acheron is said to come to the Acherusian Lake, where the souls of most of the dead remain, some for a longer time, some for a shorter, until they reach the Lethe and are reborn.
The Acheron, in Earth geographical terms, would be defined an offshoot of the Styx (in truth, the same water flowed through all the Rivers -- except the Lethe and the Mnemosyne -- though mutated and transformed by the journey.) Charon ferries the souls first through the Styx, then the Stygian Marsh, where all the rivers (except the two previously mentioned) joined and mixed together, and then through the Acheron.
Acheron, like his namesake, is a very quiet and melancholy sort of person, who is truly only happy when it rains. He rather enjoys bad news, complications, and, yes, is even somewhat partial to teenage angst and what results of it. (Sometimes he appears to be accompanied by his own personal stormcloud.) He is quiet and thoughtful, always thinking his actions and words through beforehand. He reads quite a bit (he is a lot better at languages than Styx is; neither are fluent in English, never having to use it much before, but Acheron speaks a fair bit of French, Italian, and German as well as having studied Latin.) He also spends a lot of his time writing bad poetry and being amused by the current state of the world's affairs, keeping up to date with the latest political, economic, and geographic disasters.
He is much more congenial than his brother Styx -- but outwardly comes off as much creepier and deranged in his own quiet way. Styx wears his thoughts and emotions on his sleeves; Acheron has perfected the art of saying one thing and completely meaning another, and as thus, his intentions always seem to be called into question.
Even so, like all of his River siblings (with one notable exception), his motives are never truly malevolent -- even if his actions don't tend to lead towards what's in the best interest for most people.
To those who are not able to recognize him as a spirit, he seems like a nice enough young man; he is much paler than his brother, and his eyes are a rather light but unplaceable color, but they have the same hair -- dark and wild and wet (though Acheron does have an odd streak of white, lending him a rather sophisticated and wordly air in his mind only.) Acheron keeps his neat and combed and makes some attempt at taming it, though it does not stop it from stubbornly curling in odd strands that shouldn't. Those with any amount of sixth sense may see that his hair, too, is dripping with an odd, almost dark neon-blue liquid, that his eyes are in fact bright yellow, and he really does have this weird sort of storm-cloudy mist accompanying him that threatens to perpetually rain on anyone in his vicinity.
Of all his siblings, he is closest to Styx, and though they bumped into each other often on Earth, they rarely stuck together before Lethe and Melanie's births. Melanie is more of a toy and curiosity to him than anything else, and already he has very high aspirations for her. Lethe is someone he desperately wants to like but has a hard time justifying.
____{ P h l e g e t h o n } Unknown....
____{ C o c y t u s } Unknown....
____{ L e t h e } The River of Oblivion, and the first of them to truly be reincarnated. She is an object of mystery to her siblings, with motivations and will completely unknown. She was once the most innocent of the lot, forgetful and sweet and never recognizing any of their faces; if any of these elements are present anymore, they're very cleverly disguised. As a Fa'e, she is neither clearly human nor River and the fact frustrates her more than anything else, and is (quite frankly) a point of discrimination against her by the other River spirits.
So far she seems to be unaware of Melanie's birth. Given their circumstances -- and the circumstances of her own rebirth -- it seems to be in her best interest if she never found out.

Melanie currently lives in a room in the GotP headquarters along with her guardians Styx and Acheron (who work under Ianna for their room and board.) She is not very easily reached without their permission.
