For most of the semester i've been using gouache as per request from my illustration professor, and i gotta say i do enjoy working with them. I use watercolors alot and when i switched to gouache i wasn't sure what to expect. I think i've gotten pretty good at them, but i want to see what you guys think. I did this the other day on some spare foam board from mounting stuff for my final critique. I read somewhere that using colored paper works well with gouache, but i don't know if the black was such a good idea.

Don't highlight with white and don't shade with black.

I think that will improve your painting tenfold.

ah. Probably because of the board. I actually don't have red gouache at the moment so i was using red watercolor, so it might just be the board showing through.

I really wish people would stop saying my stuff is anime. I'm trying to get away from it so bad. And besides large eyes doesn't always mean anime character.

I like it a lot, I've never used gouache ( I got -1 on visual literacy on a test because I didn't know..).

The only critique I have is the iris and pupil should be larger. The whites of the eyes are two dimensional, so you should try adding highlights and shadows. Maybe shade the glasses a little?

They're pretty easy to use. The best description i ever heard of gouache is that it's the b*****d child of watercolors and oils. And it's pretty true. You can layer them on thick like oils or you can thin them out since they're opaque watercolors. the only downfall about them is that they dry a bit darker than when you apply.

It's almost like I'm saying that except that I'm not saying anything even tangentally similar.

Anime is mostly devoid of subtlty. That is really one of it's defining qualities - it's exaggerated, extreme, super-saturated, super shiney. It's a style that prioritizes the idea of being easily produced and eye-catching.

Traditional media is great because of the subtleties. Texture, brushstrokes, and technique all show through. It's strongest advantages are actively in opposition of what anime is about.

I'm sorry If I stepped on an entire continent's only form of artistic expression there, I didn't realise what a huge ******** bigot I am.

I think some anime can look good in traditional media. Depends on what kind of media, etc etc.

Anime in oils... eh, that would be pretty awful.

Acrylics, on the other hand, would be quite good for doing an anime picture. Probably one of the best alternatives to digital because of the ability to get nice straight lines and smooth colours.

Plus, if anyone has seen the box art for the anime Samurai 7, I think it looks just fab, even though it's traditional media (I think it is anyway). Here
and here.

As for the picture... I'm not really sure, but there's something I don't like about it. It just looks kinda messy, and not really shaded well. Like.. around the chin/nose areas, and in the right side of the sunglasses. I've never use gouache, but I'm still pretty sure you could have either: a. smoothed the whole thing out a lot more, or b. made it more blocky and choppy and dramatic. The way it is now... it just looks sloppy. :/

Traditional media includes pencil, pen, crayons, colored pencils etcetera. So basically you are saying you should only draw anime on the computer. That's pretty lame, since I think it's harder to draw traditional than CG. It takes more talent to mix your own colors.

It would be like saying that, if that had a different meaning, and I agreed with it. 4laugh
