LAVENDER
the scent

Quote:

User Image

The lavenders Lavandula are a genus of about 25-30 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native from the Mediterranean region south to tropical Africa and east to India. The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, south Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia, and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens world-wide, they are occasionally found growing wild, as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range.

LAVENDER CALMS THE NERVES. SOOTHS THE SOUL

User Image

"Layli...quiet, like a whisper on the breeze, loving and gentle. Luka...a people person, the embodiment of hospitality. Both so gentle, so helpful...both with soft voices only for lullabyes, soft hands, for calming nerves, both entwined with the beautiful whispering scent of lavender."

"To see her move, is to watch a lava lamp. So flowing, so mind-numbingly beautiful that it makes you awake and asleep at the same time. To hear him talk is to listen to a stream running so slowly, to make you think only of the noise, to make all your problems vanish. To have the twins together is to sit alone and watch a sunset. To be unable to look away, or think of anything else. To have not lived until that point, and to feel as though nothing could possibly go wrong, as long as it is in your view.

ENTRY ONE
David was tired.

This is not unusual, as David was generally tired all the time. Whether he’d stayed up too late, eaten something rotten, slept in, gone for a walk or, let’s face it, woken up at all, he was tired. David never did understand why he was tired all the time, nor did he particularly care. He was much too busy watching TV or sleeping to care, after all.

“Get some more sleep,” Urged his doctors.

“Get some more exercise,” Encouraged his sport teachers.

“Try and eat better,” Suggested his dietician.

But no matter what David tried, he would have much preferred a comfy bed with a nice soft pillow, and as much sleep as he could possibly manage between school. It’s not that he didn’t want to get better, oh no; he was just far too tired to do anything about being too tired. Despite all this, David managed to hold together a band with his school mates in his two-bedroom apartment. David was pretty much naturally gifted at just about anything he had the energy to set his mind to, so learning guitar was a breeze.

The band had been over today, turning the day from a restful Sunday, into what David called a ‘Long Day.’ What David classed as a Long Day varied from bad midday television, to running out of milk, to band practice; anything that involved the slightest amount of thought, effort or boredom.

“You should try incense therapy, dude it totally worked for my mom,” His bassist had suggested during practice, when they had to take a five minute break because David’s arm had gone numb holding his notes on guitar.

At the time, David scoffed at the idea, but once he was alone, it kept slipping back into his mind. In and out like a pesky mosquito, humming in the back of his conscience. Eventually, the thought manifested itself into David crawling out of his comfortable sofa, snatching up his keys and walking out his apartment door.

Admittedly, David had stopped a good few times on the way, and turned back, but eventually he made it to the information desk on the ground floor of his apartment building.

Smiling kindly to the woman behind the desk, David asked her, in his quiet American voice, “Can you tell me if there’s any local shops that sell incense burners, miss?”

A nod, and a rain of keystrokes on her desk computer, the woman looked up to David blankly and stated, “Just down the street, first left, third right, second left and down the end of the street. I can get you a map if you’d like?”

David would have asked for her to carry him there if he could, but instead he nodded politely and smiled. He took the map as it was printed and handed to him, and trudged out the door before he could change his mind. It took him about an hour to get to the place; despite that it was only a few blocks away. Stopping out the front and unfolding his map, David looked up to the sign up top and back down to the arrow on his map.

“Solace…” David mumbled to himself, folding the map up again and stuffing it in his pocket.

Inside, he was hit in the face with about a million different smells, all tantalizingly good, all dizzyingly strong. David breathed deep and peered around the shop. Empty. Well, empty of people, and, as far as David was concerned, anything particularly interesting. Shelves and shelves of delicate-looking glass bowls, candles in small boxes, and millions of bottles of burner oils. Breathing deep, David wandered idly towards the scented oils. He scanned absently through the hundreds of labels, until his eyes fell upon a purple bottle, labeled “lavender”.

David had a deep emotional connection to the scent, ever since his mother had burnt it for him as a child when he had nightmares and couldn’t sleep. Plucking the bottle off the shelf and turning it over in his hands, David knew he’d found the one he wanted. Now where was the blasted shopkeeper?

David was not a bad kid, nor a rebel and especially not a thief; it was just that the shop was abandoned and, well, he figured he could just come back and pay for it later, right? So what he did next was incredibly out of character, and would most likely keep him up all night with guilt. He stuffed the bottle into his pocket, alongside the map, then snatched up one of the many identical glass burner bowls and a few candles. He turned and ran from the shop, as fast as he could, and didn’t stop running until he had turned back down all the streets, burst into the apartment block, flew up the stairs, flung open his apartment door and slammed it shut behind him.

David stood for a moment, huffing heavily to regain his breath and leaning against the door. Very slowly, his breathing returned to normal, until eventually, David sighed and made his way over to the kitchen table. He flopped down in one of the seats, and, setting the glass burner down and pulling the oil and matches out of his pocket and setting them next to it, David knew for sure he wouldn’t sleep tonight.

ENTRY TWO
David was scared.

There was entirely no way he could deny the jittering in his hands, and the fact that he hadn’t slept a wink yet. Besides; it was past midnight, and he knew he’d be almost unconscious from lack of sleep if he didn’t hurry up and get some soon. Sitting up, he threw off his covers and decided to watch a little TV to put himself to sleep. Trudging down the hall in his pajamas, David’s mind wandered back to the source of the panic; the lavender.

Of course, how silly could he be! His mother used the stuff to get him to sleep when he got like this as a little baby, why didn’t he think of it earlier?

Quickly, David moved to the kitchen table, where the three stolen items still sat. He plunked himself down into the seat, and pulled all three towards him, unscrewing the lid of the lavender bottle as soon as it was in his hands. David breathed deep the familiar scent, and felt himself relaxing at once.

He tipped the bottle upside down, wanting to burn as much of the stuff as possible. It poured thickly into the small glass bowl, filling it a little faster than David had thought. Before he could tip the bottle back up, it’s contents had emptied and the glass bowl was overflowing with thick, purple liquid, dripping it onto the table in huge amounts of heavily scented oil.

David sighed a little, in annoyance, taking up the candle and opening its packet. He slid the small, white candle into the steel holder underneath the bowl and breathed deeply again. The scent was shockingly strong already, and he wondered how thick it would be once he lit it.

Heaving himself to his feet, David moved into the kitchen, opening the cupboard and digging around inside for a stack of matches, which he kept for some unknown reason. He flicked the packet open, drew out a match, struck it, and moved back over to the table, carefully shielding the naked flame with one hand. He gently stuck the match on the wick of the candle, watching with heavy eyes as the waxy piece of string slowly caught alight. He pulled the match back, shaking it to put it out, and dropped it on the table next to his newly steaming oil burner.

The scent was, as David had guessed, overwhelmingly strong, and he found himself slipping into sleep within moments. As his eyelids slipped shut, he saw the steam pouring from the oil was not grey, nor did it billow up in a gentle, normal fashion. Instead, it was a hazy purple, and swirled outwards in two different directions, almost as though

…no, it couldn’t be…

As though two burners were going at once.

“Impossible…” David whispered, as his head hit the table. His eyes were already closed, and, before he knew it, he was in a deep sleep.

LINGERING ON THE BREEZE

Lighting the lamp will only be the start of the mysteries, my dear...

BURNER
As a beautiful little incense burner, filled a little too much with the lavender colored/scented liquid so that it overflows, spilling its precious cargo onto the floor. What careless person filled it this much?

BURNER [lit]
The same overflowing dish of lavender liquid, but the flame burning below reviels our first suprise. The colored smoke that billows from the burner issues out in two directions, almost as if two different burners were going at once, next to one another. How odd...

CHILD
What's this? Luka and Laylie have finally emerged. The twins wear identical lavender sweaters, with thick lavender knee-high socks, black leather school shoes and a sprig of a lavender plant hung on a fine neckchain. Laylie wears a small, grey pleated skirt, while Luka wears shorts in the identical color. They have lavender eyes and hair, and fair skin. Luka's hair is a little shorter than Laylie's, but both have long bangs around their tiny faces, and a stripe of white through their soft hair.

ADOLESCENT
The twins, having grown, now opt for much tighter-fitting, elegant clothes, with adornments of beads and jewlary hanging from every limb. Luka has gotten his ears peirced (my god) and Laylie is, erm, 'shaping up' to be a very pretty young woman. Their tops are identical dark lavender jackets, almost unbuttoned over a pale petticoat. Laylie wears a similar skirt to the one she wore as a child, while Luka wears long grey trousers. <3

Hmmm... Well, I like the idea of having twins. But I'm sure it would cost double the listed price to get them.

Also, I think you need to flesh your characters out more. Personality is probably the most important part of developing a character, and it seems like you didn't spend much time on the characters.

I think this could be an adorable concept, but it seems like there wasn't that much effort put into it thus far. Flesh it out more, and I'm sure it'll be really cute. x3

Once you have more up I'll offer some more critiques. o:

More evaluation, of course, but I love the thought of twins! Mm, especially lavender - that's probably the most soothing scent in existence. I see twins and think The Shining, then think creepy (but not to worry, yours are very, very sweet). xd
