Discuss what genre you think they fall into.
Personally I'd say pop/punk, sad but true. They are damn good for their genre however. It really depends on what you consider 'punk' in the first place. sweatdrop

They have changed quite a bit from 1039/Smoothd Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk to Shenanigans and American Idiot. I'll have to agree. They are still really good though.

They weren't really EVER punk. The only album where they were was 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. But I won't insult them by calling them Pop. But...when you think about it, they are Punk-Popish. Personally, I think they fall in with the Cure now...they're kinda Goth Rock now.

Well, according to Real Player...they were Pop Punk in their earlier albums, but now they're more General Alternative. I'm not sure what exactly General Alternative is though. xp

They are Punk Rock people, why do you think they have a history of the rebirth of punk rock?
They sound like punk rock and they were considered punk rock when they came out. Dont try and change what genre they call themselves. - -;

I have no real idea what I would put them under... But why bother? It's not like I care. I'm gonna like them no matter what genre.

I've made this comment concerning their 'genre' in a forum, I think it sums up my belief. Quote: "We never fit in completely to [the punk] scene because we were writing love songs that were heartfelt and endearing. Some of the punks didn't know what to make of us, but I finally realized that was what made us punk. We sang what we meant, from the heart, and didn't worry about what anyone was going to think." - Billie Joe Armstrong Another great one. Exactly true again. Yet, if you look punk up in the dictionary (under slang of course, otherwise you get Chinese inscence) these are the definitions: 1. Of poor quality; worthless. 2. Weak in spirits or health. Now, that seems to harness the essence of punk music. It wasn't ever really viewed as anything worth importance. That's exactly what they've had to go through- the feeling of being a poor qualitiy of band because some didn't understand why they wrote things about real life situations. Damn you mainstream crap.
