It was a little confusing, but basically it showed the world of VFD and the organization behind it, without involving the Baudelaires. The purpose was pretty much to explain how VFD worked and who the enemies of it were. There were hidden messages using the Sebald code. When you see underlined words in between "ringing," it had a hidden sentence which was usually a message to Snicket. It also explained the schism and who were on what sides, as well as the basic history of Lemony Snicket's role in VFD.

It's not really meant to make TOO much sense. After all, VFD is a rather secretive bunch. As para said just then, it's mainly about VFD. But confusingly so. It really asks more questions than gives answers.
But, my idea is, soon as the thirteenth book is out, it'll all make sense.

DarkDragonDemonica It's not really meant to make TOO much sense. After all, VFD is a rather secretive bunch. As para said just then, it's mainly about VFD. But confusingly so. IT'S THE SNICKET CHILDREN!!! *Calms down and clears throat* If you look closely at the child to the far right, he is slightly shorter than the boy and girl to the left; The boy at the left is Jacques, and the girl is Jacques's sister, Kit.
