So I've had myself a copy of the I Ching for quite a while now, but couldn't get down how to use it for divination. My copy provides instructions for how to "use the yarrow-stalk/coin oracle" but they all seem confusing...does anyone have any explanations, or comments, about the I Ching and its functions? [as a book or an oracle]

I believe to use it for divination through the coin method you have to flip the coin 3 times to figure out one trigram and then you build off that by flipping another three coins to figure out the other trigram.
If you get yin(changing) lines or broken lines then you need to make another hexagram in addition to the one you already have. I'm not too sure on how many you have ot make or whether it is just two if there even if there're more than one yin lines
I will do some research! 3nodding

I ChingIt seems like a good site. I personally don't do I ching because I have tarot, but I might try it out later. =3 It also gives explanations of the hexagrams but I think you'd be better off using your book for those. Good luck! ^_~

Well, anyway, I've looked over it now, and this seems to clear up my confusion. Thanks again!

The I Ching is a study of patterns. The idea is that the universe's current movements will affect the coins/yarrow stalks in a way that allows them to be read.
I don't really like the I Ching, despite the fact that many people claim it to be one of the foremost studyies of Taoist sorcery. I think its more than a little confusing, and its greatest value to me has been in the study of the trigrams.

I think my mother is familiar with the rules for use. I'll see if I can get her to explain it (again) so I can pass it along. Again, as with any divination tool, I find its usefulness is dependent on the practitioner's affinity. For a lot of people, it's just a vague fortune-cookie type experience. I'm no good with divination tools.
