Life at home was happy. Nikki grew up an only child to a loving mother and father in Northern Canada. It wasn’t until she was in her preteen years that Nikki even noticed her family’s financial troubles. She had known that they didn’t have television like the rest of her friends, but she spent her time playing outside rather than glued to a screen. Her parents did their best for her and she appreciated it. At the end of high school, Nikki realized that her parents could not afford to send her to university. She set her sights on the college culinary program, but dropped out when her mother fell ill and stayed at home to take care of her, working in a small restaurant as a dishwasher. When she saw an ad in the paper for a job being offered in the Caribbean, she was thrilled. It was the opportunity of a life time and there was the possibility for her to advance in the company. Her parents were very supportive and she called the number in the ad, vowing to send part of every paycheck back home to her parents.
Obtaining the work visa was made incredibly easy by the representative of the corporation and Nikki quickly found herself on an airplane, followed by a helicopter. It wasn’t until she was surrounded by ocean for hours on all sides that she realized she didn’t even know the name of the company she was going to work for. The twinges of doubt she felt were swept away at the first sight of the gorgeous island and the next few days were a whirlwind of contract signing, manager meeting, and training.
This is where things went wrong. Nikki had never had much experience working in a professional kitchen, but she knew for certain that meals consisting of living insects and extremely rare beef were not normal fare for a resort. She did not learn the real nature of the island for many weeks however, as she had been relegated to dishwashing duty, and told to stay out of Delia’s way. Her first glimpse of a ‘changed’ islander was devastating. At first she thought it was an unfortunate physical deformity. The poor man had come to the Caribbean resort to get away from his troubles. So had the person behind him in line. And the person behind her. She ran to Delia for an explanation and it was then that her world came crashing down. The contract she had signed on the first day outlined precisely the way in which she had signed away her life and was never allowed to return to the mainland.
After a few days of wallowing in self pity, Nikki, true to character, decided to try to make the best of her situation. She felt badly for the poor people trapped on the island and everyday she put all her heart into the meals she made, hoping to make at least that aspect of their lives a little better. None of the regulars knew her, but she grew develop a fondness for the familiar faces and it made her happy to see her ‘friends’ alive and, relatively speaking, well.
Unfortunately, Nikki’s urge to help and her inherent clumsiness did not mix. As it is well known, Delia does not appreciate other people in her kitchen, but tolerates the nonsense for the help they provide, especially with the ever increasing number of people she needs to care for. Nikki would come to work everyday with enthusiastic energy, but it wasn’t long before a broken dish or a spoiled broth would get her on Delia’s bad side. After a particularly bad shift, Delia sat her down to discuss her future in the kitchen and on the island. It was obvious that Nikki wasn’t suited for the job, but they both knew that she had little choice as to what she could do about it. She went home with a heavy heart and mind.
The night was spent thinking long and hard on her options. She could be transferred in the company, but she wasn’t qualified for much more than janitorial duties, something she couldn’t see herself doing for the rest of her life. The only other option was to go out
there. With the changed islanders.
But Eulie, do you have permission to quest for a staff member?Chibi Hige
Eulie
I dunno if you saw my question earlier Hige, but I just wanted confirmation as to whether or not it's okay for me to quest for a staff member working in the kitchens as a dishwasher/assistant cook.
I don't see any problem with that. As long as it's not an existing established character. I won't say we'll write our posts around it, but for example, if she were fairly new when you get your serum we could integrate that.
