And back outside. At least it wasn't raining today. Which meant this girl would likely have a bit easier time than the last one. The newt. Ah yes, that one. Well, anyhow.
Another defense class. Well this would be interesting.
Today's student would be learning to use a wooden staff. It would blend in, in the trees and was light weight enough to have with her even if she was climbing. Any weapon would get in the way a bit while climbing, save for perhaps a dagger. Those weren't the best for defense though, not unless you liked close range combat. He wasn't sure if the child did. This seemed a better bet anyhow. It was less likely to end up with someone hurt.
So out to a nice clear area he got to trek once again, this time with two wooden staves and a book. At least he could say there was less set-up than some of the classes.
Setting aside the two staves he quickly opened the book he had with him and began flipping through it. Ah yes, that's where he'd been.
Now hopefully the girl wouldn't be too late.

Alaqua trudged down the lane towards the clearing. After her last experience with a battle class, it was no wonder she was hesitant to take another, even if it was with a different teacher. The girl sighed as the walk was all-too-short and she ended up in the clearing where the teacher was reading a book. Well, he looked nicer than Lilly, at least.
The brass dragon trailed along, hoping that this teacher would try and kill the girl. He'd just have to keep an eye out for any little midget dragons that might be present.

Midget dragons weren't a problem. Not with him. He had someting far more effective for daling with disobedient students. Oh, he always hoped they'd listen. But if they didn't. Well he had no problem letting them know that he wouldn't stand for it.
So as the girl walked up she was given a quick glance before he snapped te book shut. He knew all about the disagreement with Lilly, but he wouldn't hold that against her. He wasn't too fond of the woman either. Then again, he didn't really like any of the other teachers. So she wasn't a special case.
"Good afternoon." He briskly stated before leaning down to deposit his book and pick up both staves before holding one out to her. "My name is Haruki Mitsu, I'll be teaching you how to defend yourself with a wooden staff. Listen closely and do as I say and we won't have a repeat of your last class." It was as simple as that. Haruki didn't snap at people for no reason.

Ala reached out to take the staff offered to her, blushing as the man mentioned her class with Lilly. He knew about that? Stupid woman. Ala managed to nod to let Haruki know that she heard him, though silently cursing Lilly the entire time. It wasn't her fault that she was kicked out of the class. How was she to know that she was supposed to actually talk back to the teacher?
Bob, thus far unaddressed by the man, took that to mean that he was not needed and stayed off to the side. With a sigh, he pondered about the inequality of the girl getting to take fun classes while he was just always sitting there.

"Good, now then." He watched as the dragon slunk off to the side to wait. Good dragon, he didn't have any real use for him in this battle.
Now, back to the task at hand. "The first step would be to get used to the weight of the weapon. You will need to understand it's balance to move it quickly and efficiently." This was a basic rule with most closer range weapons, if not all. Knowing what you wield was the first step to mastering them. "Once you know the center and balance you can use what weight the weapon has to your advantage." He Quickly spun the thing a few times to show one of the things you could use balance for. Not that it would be much good, but basics first.
"Of course, that's only the beginning." But they'd start there. "Why don't you try getting used to it for a moment. Just don't hit your head." Some children might try something fancy, which could result in such endings. He didn't ned to explain that the class was canceled due to the child whacking themselves with a stick. "While you practice, keep in mind that a staff is a larger weapon. This means that it is a bit slower at times than weapons such as a dagger, or a shortsword. However, you have a longer range. It is always important to know your strengths as well as your weaknesses."

Ala glanced over at Bob as well, Haruki's gaze drawing her attention there. Lucky dragon. She then turned her attention back to the teacher. Okay, that didn't sound too hard. She watched as he spun his own staff about a bit. Okay, that was cool.
Nodding after the last bit that Haruki said, Ala held up the staff. Grasping it with both hands, she moved it around, slowly. She shifted her hands some to make movements a bit smoother and tried some more, still slow.
Once she was a little more comfortable with the staff, she tried moving it quicker.

No, it wsn't that hard. It just took a moment to get used to. Once you understood the weight of the object and how to shift it you simply memorized the movements with your arm and trained them to be used to the workout. With those two steps would come speed.
Battle, like all things, worked with starting at the simplest and learning the more complex. Defending oneself from an attack was more complex, first she neded understand what she had to use. "Good, once you think you have an idea of the weapon why not try the same thing, but behind your back." There where two ways she could do that. One with both hands, the other with one. Though with one hand she was more likely to hit her legs, or head. Still he demonstrated both to let her choose. Really, this was just another way to prove she understood the weapon well enough.

Alaqua blinked. Behind her back? She twisted one arm around, trying to repeat what she'd done before. "Ouch!" The staff hit her foot and the girl jumped.
Bob made a sort of laughing sound from where he was watching. The koala girl glared at him, but to no avail.
Sighing, Ala tried again, this time using both hands. It was a bit more awkward than using just one hand, but she didn't hit her foot this time at least.

Yes, that was what he'd thought would happen. Though that dragon should have known better than to laugh at it's keeper. Still, that was between the two of them. She could deal with the creature later in her own way, it just needed know better than to disrupt class and it would be fine.
He watched for a moment as she got used spinning it behind her back before nodding. "Good, now let my explain how to block attacks with a staff. These are just basics, I will expect you to be more creative and learn ways to incorperate this into more useful complex ways with time." He wa meant to give them the basics. "We will only go over this once. Then you will be expected to be able to see the attacks coming and block them."
He waited to let the girl get a better grip on the weapon so it wasn't behind he back before swinging the staff down at her slowly. "An attack that is a swipe from any direction is simpler to deflect. Keep your hands apart and use the center of the staff as a bar for the weapon to hit instead."

Ala relaxed as the teacher began talking again. When he said he was only going over them once, she concentrated to remember what he was going to say. It would not be good if she forgot half of it.
As he brought down his staff slowly in an attack, Alaqua quickly brought her own staff up, using the center area between her hands like he said to block. Not too hard, at least at super-slow speed.

Good, she'd blocked that. "This will work on all types of attacks like this." He demonstrated by mimicing the movement from the side, after moving to the side to it was aimed more at her stomache, and lastly from below to up. "This type of block is most likely the easy and used type. Of course there are others."
He didn't wait for her to ask him what they could be, but instead moved into the next type of allack. This was more a jab. Keeping the staff straight so it would only hit a single point rather than a line like a swipe would. Once again he moved slowly to let her memorize the motion. "This is best block by redirecting the weapon. Trying to stop it by puting your own staff before it leaves too much room for error. It also has a lower hit area, making it easier to dodge with redirection than a swipe." This type of block had multiple ways it could be done though. Which made teaching it a bit less simple. "The best way to go about redirecting the blow would be to use your own staff by spinning it. In doing this you can get around the other weapon in oder to be able to force it away. Of course, this is a bit harder to learn. The other mothod is simple to once more use the center of the blade to push it to one side. Just make sure that you don't wait too long to do this, or you won't have enough time move it farther away."

Ala watched as Haruki demonstrated other directions a swipe could come from. She flinched a bit before realizing that he wasn't going to hit her with the staff, just show her what he was talking about.
Then he changed the type of attack all together. As he explained how to block the attack, he was slowly using the attack against her. Ala decided to go for the easier blocking method, spinning her staff to knock the teacher's to the side.

He nodded as she swept it aside. "Good, now these are just some basics. You'll need to master things with time. But fortoward learning to block basic things like this will do." Yes, he was telling her to practice on her own later, but he told all of the students that. Revon was blessed with hearing it everyday. So this was nothing special. "I told you I would only show you once, so keep your eyes open and watch. If you get hit it's your own fault for not using the knowledge you were granted."
And with no further warning he quickly swung the staff at her side, no longer going nice and slow for her. Of course, he wasn't going too fast yet either. He wasn't completely evil. Still, wether she blocked, or not the next swing came this time diagonally from above. Down towards her should. He'd just attack with this one way to start, get her used to that. Then maybe he'd let her try mixing both types of blocking in.
((this means yes you can assume they get to have a little spare session. He's just only using swiping attacks right now. *Nods.* You can say if you block or get hit. So if you want to say there's more attacks you can say where they came from))

At least she got a warning before he started attacking. Still, Ala was startled and clumsily made the first block, but couldn't recover in time to block the second attack. The sting on her shoulder made her wince a bit. She gripped the staff tighter and made the block on the next attack.
Bob's tail swished as he watched, grinning. He wasn't laughing, at least, though one could see he clearly wanted to. This was fun to watch!

Haruki didn't flinch in the least when she took the hit. It wasn't his job to fawn over the children in their battle classes. He wasn't goig to kill her, but someone she was fighting someday might. So if he stopped to ask if she was ok after each time she slipped up, or flinched and stayed his attacks he'd be doing her more wrong than good. She might be left believing that life was, infact, filled with nice people who played fair in a fight and waited for you to get back on your feet.
Life was far from that.
He continued up with just swipes for a while before deciding that she'd had enough practice to have the basics. Include both swipes and jabs. "Think about how you move and balance. There is a rythme to moving any type of weapon. Once you figure it out this will be a lot easier." Which meant he might be hitting her less. Good for her, it didn'tmatter much to him. She just neded to learn to move between each stance to another.
Afterall, they weren't just swinging sticks around.
