What is absinthe?

Absinthe is a strongly alcoholic liquor made from alcohol and distilled herbs or herbal extracts, the main herbal ingredients are wormwood (artemesia absinthium) and anise, but also usually including other herbs such as artemesia pontica, melissa, fennel, hyssop and lemonbalm.

High quality absinthes are always distilled rather than produced from herbal essences, and have a herbal and and quite floral character and underneath that the bitterness of wormwood.
Absinthes are generally a pale green in colour, sometimes with a slight yellowish tone. Upon adding water, the abinshte louches (turns milky). Then there's the clear absinthes, with no color at all - often called La Bleue or La Blanche. They are simply made without the final coloring step, and sometimes also differs a bit in the compositions of herbs. But then, not many absinthes have the exact same composition, that's what makes them unique.
The traditional strength is 55% - 72% alcohol, or 110º - 144º proof. There are modern absinthes that are stronger (Hapsburg has one that is 89%), but they taste awful and nothing but alcohol. Throughout history the very best of absinthes were always made from a base of grape alcohol. This was however somewhat expensive, and to get cheaper production, there was cheaper brands that made theirs using grain or beet alcohols instead.

Absinthe is by far the most misunderstood drink ever. So many myths and rumours. Pretty much since the day of its "birth" it was called "La Fée Verte", or "The Green Fairy". That definitely puts even more into the myths of its seductive and very intoxicating powers.

Absinthe differs from almost all other drinks in containing a higher percentage of alcohol, and of course in containing extract of wormwood, or artemesia absinthium, to give it its correct Latin name. Wormwood is a herb related to the daisy family that grows wild in many areas of Europe. From ancient times it has been prized as one of the most valuable medicinal herbs. An Egyptian papyrus from 1600BC recommends wormwood as a stimulant and tonic, an antiseptic, and a remedy for fevers and period pains. Pythagoras thought that wormwood leaves in wine would ease childbirth, and Hippocrates also recommended it for period pains, as well as anemia and rheumatism. Today, wormwood oil, the oil obtained from artemisia absinthium, is used as a counterirritant in many common over-the-counter pharmacy products.

About the Alchemist

Name: Alchemist 'Alch' Crowley
Given Name: Won't tell
Age: 17
(gradually updating)

Day One.

(with handwriting fairly smooth)

I can't believe these fools. Putting me in an institution for something so silly! I merely have been telling them for years that my immune system is no good and my body is revolting in a tumultuous and bitter manner... it's not such a big deal is it? Pills and medicines, that's all I need! Just make me better, that's all I ask!

To lock me in this small room, taking these odd pills... Hrmph. I'll show them. I'll show them how sick I am, how these pills won't help me... I'm not insane; I'm ill!

Day Two

This is getting ridiculous. The... the stuff they make me drink is stupidly strong, and it's not making me feel any better. Someone prattled about it being considered an ancient cure-all, and it only made me feel better for a slight bit.

I'm still very upset about being here, and reluctant to even try going out to meet people.

For now, I will stay on my own.

Day Three

(with handwriting slight scribbled)

I feel drunk! That is how I feel on this green liquid, and I highly dislike it. How unfair. Trying to make me feel better by making me feel sick another way.

Distraction methods don't work with me! They don't!

Still no efforts to venture forth from this room. I don't want to see other people. If I stay here, I can deny that I am here against my will. I can say I want to be here.

Day Seven

I keep seeing flickers.

Flicker, flicker, flicker...

A rather fun word. I've made a list. i think.

Either way. I keep seeing flickers. They make me giggle when I miss them. I always feel silly on this medication... It's like being in a continuous dream, spinning, weaving, dancing...

Day Eight

This has to be kept up~

I missed many days, perv prei previously because of distractions due to my meda medicine.

I can barely focus. They've made me iller.

Day Nine

I didn't take my medication today. I do not feel up to acting like a complete and under imbecile under the influence of it.

I felt absolutely ridiculous when I read the previous two entries; I sound like a true maniac. I'm merely ill!

And these idiots, fools, buffoons... they've made me worse! How could they even dare! I'm going to contact Mother and Brother about this. I want to come home.

Day Twelve

I've bitten my nails rather badly.

These habits are killing me

Medication is hated I want to go home.

Maybe I should think more clearly, rather than have the Fairy tell me speak.

Day thirteen

There's a funny face I've begun to see in all my glasses; it makes me think of men in trees.

I don't think it's really there.

But it makes for a nice companion.

I call him Leaf, for now.

Day Fifteen

I have not taken my medication in a few days. I was tired of feeling so giggly.

But Leaf is still there, and I occasionally feel like he's whispering to me, and giggling with me when I cannot stop myself.

He's a good companion. I shall like to bring him home.

Day Sixteen

The medication has been retaken, and the giggles are back!

Leaf likes to make me giggle. He often mumbles silly things to me, or so I think, so I hope, so I dream and scream.

I think I scream.

Oh well.

So says the Hatter.
