Choma approached the mouth of the crevice and stopped what she thought to be a respectable distance away, seating herself on the gravel with a minor clicking of small stones. Though he had declared himself an exile of the pack and had made it abundantly clear he wished nothing to do with her or their pup, knowing the grouchy male was nearby made her feel obligated to occasionally check in.

"Aboki?" she ventured, awaiting a response.

There was a long beat of silence, which would lead one to believe that the crevice was currently unoccupied, but at length, faint sounds of stirring could be heard from within as Aboki, having just begun to doze off for the afternoon, was rudely awakened by a gratingly-familiar female voice.

One lip twitched, threatening to show teeth, as he collected his feet beneath him and rose.

"What?" he growled up the passageway, letting the echoes carry his irate question to her.

Choma's ears twitched at the sounds of stirring and then flattened at his single nastily-spoken word. Why did he always have to be difficult? Just once, she would have liked to have been greeted with, at the very least, indifference.

"Will you come out, or shall I come in?" she half-inquired, half-challenged. If one did not get the upper-hand early-on in a conversation with the snake wolf, she'd learned, the conversation would be completely useless.

Aboki growled at this and gave himself a brief shake, sand and leaves flying from his earthen-colored pelt in a flurry and pattering against the inner walls of his sanctum.

No. She would NOT come in. He tolerated few presenses in his home and Choma's was not one he wished to entertain now or ever.

Narrowing his eyes, the lanky male stalked up the uneven incline that brought him out of his warm den and to the surface where the spicy winds of autumn were becoming the cold breath of winter.

"What?" he asked again, narrowing his eyes and shivering a bit against the chill as he glared at the alpha female.

Choma inwardly smirked, though outwardly she kept her poker face. "I thought you may like to know that our son has been growing quickly." she informed him. "Another turn of the moon, and he may be ready to rule alongside me."

Perhaps if he wasn't happy to see her, he might at least be happy to learn that their single surviving pup was doing well.

Aboki noticeably flinched at her first statement and flattened his ears in dislike.

"Don't call him ours." he grumbled. "He's -your- son." He rose to his feet and turned to pad back into his den. "And I don't care what you OR he does."

He thought they'd already established this when her belly had grown big and she'd come to inform him of "their" impending litter. He'd made it clear he wanted nothing to do with them, and he hadn't been bothered when she'd later brought him news that there had only been a single survivor of the original four.

Why should he care she'd groomed their little accident into a headstrong dolt just like herself to masquerade as a leader for the rest of the dysfunctional idiots she'd amassed to follow her?

"He asks me at times what you were like." Choma said to his retreating back, trying her best not to grow indignant. "I don't like to tell him that you live right on the mountain and don't want to talk to him. I've told him you were killed by one of the humans' firesticks."

She had, indeed, told Quetzel this, if only for the reason that she had quite enough problems to sort without the added drama of an astranged father and son right within easy distance of one another.

For some reason, this made Aboki stop short as he stood, letting this soak in a moment. "Did you?" he asked dispassionately, turning to fix her with his yellow eyes.

"And how exactly did I die? Heroically bringing down a buck? Boldly venturing into the human camps where no one dared go before me?" Just what kind of bear dung had she been feeding this pup? For that matter, what other sorts of ridiculous illusions had she been feeding the others who looked to her for guidance?

Gods, she was a terrible leader.

Choma rose to her feet and turned her back on him.

"No, actually. I told him you died on your back, wetting yourself, and begging for your life. It gives him something to aspire NOT to become." At this, she gave him a dismissive flick of her feathery tail.

"That was all. I'll leave you to your misery now." she snorted, jotting a quick mental note to herself to simply not bother in the future.

Aboki, relieved at her departure, turned once again to return to the warmth of his den. He would have done precisely that, really, had something not caught his nose.

Something familiar and overpowering that kept him rooted in his tracks and then forced him to look over his shoulder at the retreating gold female. It was the same scent she'd brought on her the evening he had come to refer to as The Mistake had taken place.

Well, then, good thing she was leaving and taking it with her. Let her bumbling male followers turn themselves into slobbering idiots and fawn over her. He wouldn't be taken by its bizarre power.

"Had other reasons for making the walk, did we?" he heard himself say.

....blast it.

Choma stopped and turned, blinking at him.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded, though she already knew. Her heat had been upon her in full force only a few days ago, and she had waited for exactly that reason before making the walk.

Like Aboki, she recognized their breeding to have been a mistake, and she didn't wish to repeat it. Not for Aboki's reasons, precisely, but Choma considered it to be fairly solid proof the gods didn't approve if three out of a four-puppy litter turned up dead shortly after being born.

For her, it had been heartbreaking business, awakening to find that only one of the tiny curled forms next to her was still warm. If was for this reason she didn't desire more children.

Aboki turned the rest of the way and padded toward her. "What AM I talking about? You tell me." he challenged. His hackles tingled as he sifted through the tangled coil of feelings that had reared their head suddenly, desperately seeking anger.

He was not going to surrender himself....at least not before making it clear that he thought she was a spiteful deceitful snake who was out to ruin his life.

Keeping her eyes firmly on his, she planted her hindquarters on the ground once more. "You're talking about making assumptions." she growled. "If that is what I was after, there are plenty of others who'd happily be up to the task. Others who might spare a thought for their children now and then." Her words sought to hurt, but she put little force behind them. It was hard to hurt someone who cared abotu so little.

"Others..." Aboki parroted mockingly, walking a wide circle around the sitting she-wolf. "And where were these others the last time, Choma?" It was no longer the scent, now muffled, that incensed him so much as the opportunity to get the better of her for once did. "I assume you had males lined up for you, so why me?"

The alpha's lips curled back to show her fangs. "It was wrong." she replied. "And you're in agreement with me on that, so why bring it up?" She shifted her weight a bit, not sure where or how she lost the upper hand in this conversation but looking for the first chance possible to regain it.
