I'm talking about most awkward, heavy, cumbersome member of the marching group.

I would have to say the one I choose to march with... the baritone saxophone. It's hard to maneuver on the field.

I wouldn't know the hardest, but I do know that flutes are very hard to march with, even though they're not heavy and cumbersome. You have to keep a flute perpendicular to the ground in playing position, which kills your arm if it's done too long, and it's the only instrument that's held sideways, meaning that a right slide is extra hard.

I've never actually marched it, but I play it in concert band. Marching a contra-bass clarinet would suck. You can't see a thing in front of you cuz the neck goes up, and then down

The bands that literally have shoulder-propped tubas.
My band has sousaphones, but I've seen tubas that rest on shoulders.. Ow.

In my band, though, I'd have to say the baritone. It's the biggest instrument held upright, like a trumpet. :3

Marching a contra-bass clarinet would be suicide. It's plumbing. xD; I'm not making fun of it: I am a clarinetist.

I agree with the bari.

Yeah I think it's the baritone horn. I play it and it gets so tiring! Our brass instructor plays the trumpet so he doesn't know what it's like to carry that baritone around. He's always bugging me about putting my horn down but it's only because it's so heavy.

But at the end of the season, you get some mean ol' guns to arm wrestle with. It's pretty cool to be able to flex.

i actually march with bass and and contra bass clarinet... i is sooo hard becuase the shoulder strap and the body strap always give me a pinched nerve... and there was one time that i trip over my contra bass clarinet... and got jab in the head with its mouth peice...

To me its the Sousaphones at my school xD;
We don't have pads and such so the tuba rests on the shoulder the whole time, you get used to it sure, but when you first start it hurts like hell.
And when doing a right slide it rams into my side so its hard to take a big breath xD;

I would have to say flutes, trumpets, sousaphones, and bari's
My friends all play one or the other and my brother has marched, a bari.
The worst Instrument to march though, is the piccolo. It kills the elbows, chest bone, and shoulders. Plus, if it isn't in tune or a wrong note is played, it will hurt your ears and the rest of the band's ears

exactly thank you! i would rater carry the extreamly hevy sousaphone which distributs weight acroos the shoulders chest and arms then having a incresed amount of pressure and strain on the bicept of a single arm T.T but still i wouldn't change instruments cuz i <3 flute too much

sousaphones gets huge bruises across their shoulders though

Hmmm, I guess I'd have to say tuba or sousaphone is the hardest(we don't have any sousaphones though)
Although marching with a valve trombone that weighs like 10 to 15lbs is kinda hard since we have to hold the like a trumpet player...and then when we're att attention none of our instrument can touch our body.....painful after a while but I get muscles in the end

Im sticking by my choice...clarinet.

I have found that they are the most tempermental instrument. You can't tune them in cold weather, you can barely hear them, and if it is cold enough or wet enough they just shut down altogether. Really they shouldn't be marched with. I don't know why I am marching with it!

The Tuba must be difficult. I have great respect for those people. We have 4 and I it is suprising how strong they are. My director puts me in sets where I have to dodge Tubas left and right because he knows I am pretty much the only person who is not afraid. However, in those sets I have to dodge them because they can't. I don't know how they do half of the drill!
