Accoustically, nosebleed is the best way to go. I don't know why. It has something to do with the way the sound knocks around and everything it sounds....I dunno, fuller. I've never had to sit in the farthest balcony because I've got some....err....connections. That is, all the maestros love me because I was part of a VERY imposing director's city choir for a number of years. And I helped out with the pit during a few operas. Yay.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the loge (1st balcony) because the sound is still really good and you can see everything. Plus, the seats are ususally at a steeper angle than mezzanine (2nd balcony) so the idiots who all lean forward in their seats really aren't a problem.
Mezzanine isn't so bad, but it's too far away for my taste. If I can't see the actors' facial expressions, I start making them up myself. It's a weird quirk of mine. People begin thinking I'm crazy. So it's easier to just fork out the extra $40 a ticket for loge seats.

I like balconies. If not than a seat next to the aisle. Thankfully, my grandparents have seasons passes to the Mulroy civic center. We have balcony 7! smile It has the best (and most professional) shows in Syracuse. mrgreen

I like box seats, but that's just me. I love being able to see backstage. 3nodding

Personally, I think it depends on the the theatre.
Like, take the Gershwin in New York. It's huge! And the balcony is set far back. I would say that the overhang is over row R. So in a case like that, I think that the "best seats" would be the front center orchestra right about the point where it starts to elevate back. So like, row 'G'ish?
BUT, in smaller theatres like the Imperial where the balcony's over hang is like row K, then I think that front Mezzanine is actually better then sitting down stairs.
I don't like ever sitting in the back of downstairs, because the balcony over my head makes me feel claustrophobic, and I don't like sitting in the balcony section of the theatre because I feel like I am to far from the stage and in many cases I sometimes get a case of vertigo! Hehe... I SWEAR that the Palace theatre should have seat belts in there balcony seats.
Ha, thankfully at this point I know many of the theatres in New York well enough to know where to get tickets and where not to. DON'T GO UPSTAIRS IN THE BROADHURT OR ST. JAMES! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

See, I'm so used to sitting in the first balcony, I can't sit many other places without going crazy.
As for the WORST seats in the house, the floor, under the balcony. Not only can you not see a blasted thing, the sound is all wonky and delayed. eek Oye, it drives me insane.
For some reason, at the Ohio Theatre, Palace and Great Southern, nobody is allowed to sit in the boxes. Of course they're tiny. There are usually lighting fixtures in them. Sometimes pontiffinal brass sections do their thing up there cause it looks cool.
I still stand firm on loge being the best. If you're not afraid of heights. I was in loge for The Producers and a Mandy Patinkin concert/comedy show thing. Best freaking seats ever.
