A former member of the Unity Walkers laid underneath the stars in the grasses beyond the famous Pridelands, staring into the inky blue and black twilight of the in-between hours. His very busy and, really, fullfilling life played by his eyes as he questioned his purpose. Who was he now...? Why did the pride he'd known since birth not feel like home anymore after all this time?
Matifu had wandered far from home, leaving his remaining two sons to share the burden of his former title. He was just getting old, and he'd seen so much in his time... He'd been just a cub when the pride split apart, and watched as family after family abandoned the lands. As their priest had died and left only his sister to lead the pride when the plague struck later on, and his own sister's first litter, followed by the death of all but her one son. He had been there for the birth of the twins, and the revival of the pride, Kiva's return, the birth of his first children... So much had transpired over the days turned to weeks turned to months, turned to years.
But, now that Theluji and Tulivu had moved on, and the pride was alive and thriving again... He found himself feeling withdrawn from the bustle of every day life, life mundane and repetitive. His view of himself had gone into question with Theluji's disappearance. Without her, was he supposed to just go back to the lifestyle he led before? Did that guy still exist? He couldn't perform his duties and be a healthy addition to the pride so long as these questions remained.
So, he'd said goodbye to his family and friends and set out on a sort of soul-search, hoping that in doing so, Kiva would help him find the lion that he was to be, or at least help him find peace before he completed his part in the cycle, and returned to the Earth and heavens.

It constantly seemed to be Shiri's luck to wander across lone lions on her casual strolls about the very edge of the pridelands. Though she had grown more used to it with age, there was still a part of her that screamed with frustration at the very site of anyone nearby. Habits she developed early on in her childhood were nearly impossible to break and slowly, the femme took a few nervous steps back. As she prepared to turn her head and leave, she thought for a moment why, as a grown adult, she would flee. With a slight sigh, the inner turmoil came to a stop and the female continued, disregarding the male nearby.
Easily the grass-colored lioness could have passed by, using her quiet nature to go unnoticed, but as she walked she could not help but notice a familiar expression on the male's face. He seemed lost. Feeling a pang of familiarity hit, the lioness' ears lowered and she attempted to continue on. Finding her feet were unable to move, Shiri only watched further, beautiful green eyes transfixed by the male before her.
Even with just a few glances, Shiri could tell that this male was much older than she. By his stature, size and fur this was clear to her, but what truly gave it away were his eyes. Shiri breathed out, allowing the cold air form a slight smoke as she did so. Those lost, old eyes... Shiri spoke in thought, looking at him with eyes so similar it was frightening. Shiri was a new adult, but she was wise beyond her years, jaded with situations that should not happen to a cub as young as she had been.

A scent drifted his way... it smelled..... oddly familiar, but very old. The nose never truely forgets a scent, however, and he was certain that he'd come by it before.
Ghostly bright eyes shifted to the approaching female, gaze coming into focus on the young and pale marked figure's dark striping. The green eyes, the orange coloring, now Matifu knew where he'd seen it before. A long time back when Ororo was still just a cub, he'd taken his son for a trip out here near the Pridelands and they had come by this female when she was that same age. Matifu didn't recall her name by now, of course, and found it ironic, a soft smile coming to his muzzle with a faint chuckle. They seemed to be the exact same age, this female and his second born son. He doubted if she'd remember him though. They hadn't really met back then but in passing.
He was thankful, then, that he hadn't gotten so old that his senses weren't gone yet. True, his mane and pelt were paler than in his younger days, but he still had the frame and muscle mass of a hunter, having grown into the role and maintained it to the very day he relinquished it for his travels. It did him some good to see a familiar face, even if there wasn't a name attached to it yet.
"Evening, I'm not disturbing you, am I?"

Unlike Matifu, Shiri did not recognise the male. Perhaps when she was younger she did not care too much about seeing lions twice and so did not bother learning much about others, or maybe she had been too caught up with Matifu's son at the time. Whatever the case, Shiri found an interest in the male's expression and seemed to be captivated by it. With a strange glint in her eyes, the female continued to slink by slowly.
As Shiri had nearly broken her gaze and managed to pass by, she heard the male's voice speaking. To her, she wondered only for a moment for there were no others around the two of them. Lifting her head in embarassment for being caught, she looked to him slowly, as though she might be worried about being reprimanded. Reminding herself that now she was an adult, she stood firmly on the ground and gathered herself enough to finally speak. It would be nice to speak to another that night for the many nights before had been ones of lonesomness.
The typical Shiri would have been frightened away at the thought of a conversation, but the newly matured lioness was pleased to see that her antisocial tendencies did not scare away everyone. She was glas to know that she might be interesting enough to speak to, despite a complete lack of a story to tell.
Taking only one step forward towards Matifu in a way to show respect to her elder while speaking, the lioness finally did so, "Most certainly not. I am pleased to have company this night.." Her voice was hesitant, but this would be a habit she would likely never break. A part of Shiri always wanted to pull away from others, despite her clear need of companionship and love.

"Then I'm glad I happened this way," Matifu chuckled, glad to find that he wasn't an unwelcomed or disturbing presence. He peered sideways at her then, though, with his ghostly blue eyes... suspicion in his gaze, a harmless curiosity. "You seem very familiar, miss, might I have your name?"
Of course, he was sure that, one: He wouldn't remember her name after all these months, if he'd ever gotten it, and two: She was the same cub from before, but he wouldn't come outright and blurt that out, on the off chance he was mistaken.

With her muzzle facing the dark night sky, the young adult smiled as the male asked of her name. Though she was a loner through and through, it was pleasant to have company. And the smalltalk was always comforting. "Shiri..." She said quietly, her voice trailing off as though she was deep in thought as to what else she might be able to say.
Turning her gaze towards Matifu, the lioness seemed as though she tried to read through him and figure out just what it was he found interesting about her. Although she kept herself busy with the night sky, she could feel the male's eyes piercing into her. He was watching her and where the young female might have been disturbed at first, this night she was amused.
"Do I remind you of someone?" She finally asked, a playful smile on her maw.

"Yes, actually.... you remind me of a young girl that my son and I once briefly met. I'd imagine she'd be your age by now, and just as lovely I'm sure." He charmed with a gentle grin, in an uncle-type manner.

Shiri listened carefully to what the elder lion was saying to her. Glancing in his direction, she tried to look him over for some type of memory. As much as Shiri hated company when she was younger, she often remembered every face that she met. Not being able to place a paw on just who he was, she figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, "..Dare I ask the name of your son?" A faint smile appeared on the female's maw as the two continued to speak with one another. As he complimented her, her cheeks flushed a deep pink. Shiri would never grow used to being complimented like that.

"I don't mind at all," He smiled softly. "Ororo'lisani is his name, though by now he's an adult as well."
He merely grinned softly again as she grew flustered, kneading the ground with large paws before settling down.

Shiri smiled when the male answered her. Sadly, the name did not seem familiar. She would think later about all the lions she had come across and see if the name would come up in her mind. Still smiling, the lioness looked out towards the sky and asked a second question, "If I may ask, what pride.. if you belong to any, do you belong to?"
The lioness was unsure if these types of questions went unasked among other lions, but she was curious. The pridelands seemed tempting, but truly, she never really knew of the others. Perhaps she could find a smaller, less intimidating pride.

"I was born and raised to the Unity Walkers... Ushirkino Watembezaji, though these days I wander anywhere but. It will always be my home, however. If you should ever happen by, let them know Matifu sent you, they're sure to welcome you." The gentle giant replied with a rumbling purr.

Shiri nodded. She had never heard of the Unity Walkers before, but she kept the name in the back of her mind in case she might ever stumble across that pride, or others from it. "I appreciate your advice. In the case that I am not welcomed into the pridelands, I will be certain to find that pride and speak with them.." Shiri smiled and looked around. The sky was growing darker and soon she would need to find a place to rest.
Before she said anything, Shiri was proud of herself. As a cub, it took such a great effort to remain in the company of anyone else. She kept herself distant as though becoming closer would only result in them leaving again. This time, however, even if they never met one another again, she had a wonderful conversation and company for a time.
Releasing a deep breath, the lioness smiled and returned her gaze to Matifu, "I should probably be off.. I hate to cut our conversation short, but the life of a rogue requires shelter each night in order to remain protected.."

The male's ears perked as the lioness spoke again at the end of the topic of his origins. Nodding quietly, he thought to suggest with a gentle rumble.
"Allow me to walk you there. It would hardly do for me to let you go alone during nightfall, not in good conscience. I believe I came by an aclove not far from here, that would make a suitable shelter."
He rose to his paws again, a massive lion by any standards, but with a heart of gold beating within his white painted chest.
"I'm not ready to settle for the night yet myself, so I'll be on my way once you've decided if it's suitable or not, but, the choice is yours, dear Shiri."

During her many other meetings with lions and other animals, Shiri had never been offered company when finding shelter. When the male offered, Shiri smiled warmly. He was such a gentle lion, the lioness was glad to be in his presense that night. He gave her faith in others and cheered up the sadness that she refused to show.
Smiling as she spoke, the lioness' voice came out quietly, "I would enjoy that. I appreciate your offer.." Shiri began to walk towards Matifu as he rose, and made her way at his side. She hadn't realised just how large the male was, but at his side, this was obvious. Though there was no romantic interest in the lioness' mind, it felt nice to be at the side of a large male and Shiri hoped that sometime in her life, she might find someone to walk eternally beside.
"I am sure it will be a lovely spot.." She continued, surprised that the male had been willing to find another if Shiri did not approve. The resting spots in which Shiri often stayed were not always the safest in the roguelands, though oftentimes, they were all she could find. If this spot was worthy of Matifu, Shiri thought it would be the perfect spot for her.
