Listening to death or any other kind of metal, it's hard to single out the bass.

I have known very few death metal bassists to do more that the roots (mainly being simply pedaling E) and hide behind growling distortions and the guitarists, seing as there is usually more than one (also both overly distorted). However, i have seen a few, such as my friend's band Sinner's Prayer, who actually apply music theory and forethought into their bass lines.

Marxist_Revolution_Now If your going to play death metal you have to get a 5 string. Eh, 5 strings are convienent, but you dont need one. I think there should be more good death metal bass players, the guitarists get incredibly noodley, fast, and heavy parts, bass players can get the same if they wanted (or were good enough) to do that stuff

i do agree there are alot of death metal bands whose bassists play just the roots, but some of them who i don't know if you would call death metal but have death metal influences like the black dahlia murder, lamb of god, through the eyes of the dead, at the gates they seem to be able to play along with the guitar pretty well

Not really, playing fast like you do in death metal, the B string becomes distorted and sounds terrible. The low B should be used more to accent the darker riffs and chords.

I play death metal on my bass and overall all you need to know is double picking and have some quick movements for some songs, also a lot of it is basic and straight forward but the bass DO NOT hide behind any guitar!
Me and a friend have his amp and mine equal while playing and anyways some tricky bass lines in some metal, check out of the ashes by symphoney x (symph, spelled wrong)

guys you don't seem to know a lot about bass if you think that any body who plays any form of metal with a bass and is a pro just slams E. The bassist for children of bodom is a mad man. Deth Klok's murderface gets his crazy fingers on in every song. ect. every one who plays metal is tallented if they are signed. most of the time the bass is playing the same riffs as the guitar is that's why you cant hear it. and five string is the way to go with metal because diversity is the key. maybe even a six.
