KOTV News
Tulsa's annual gay pride week is more than a week away, but it's already stirring up controversy. As part of a week's worth events, Tulsa's gay and lesbian community has organized a "Gay Day" at the Tulsa Zoo.

And that has some Tulsa parents upset. News on 6 reporter Ashli Sims says one Tulsa mother of four says she was shocked to see what's happening at the Tulsa Zoo on June 4th. Tulsa's gay community is having a "Gay Day" at the zoo for families and friends of gays and lesbians.

Its one of several events for Gay Pride week. Donna Jones: "That is something that we do frequently on Saturdays is go to the zoo and that's not something I would want to take my children to." Dan Hicks: "I just think it’s very inappropriate to have a gay demonstration at the Tulsa Zoo where young children are and they're not ready for their parents to have to discuss these kinds of issues."

Organizers say the trip to the Tulsa Zoo is not meant to be a demonstration. Nancy McDonald with PFLAG: "It’s not anything about sexuality it’s about family and families enjoying each other and taking children to the zoo."

Zoo officials say they're aware of "Gay Day," but it’s not a zoo-sponsored event.
Tulsa Zoo spokesperson Marnie DuCato: "Where as we're not particularly sponsoring this event, we are a city facility a public facility therefore we do not discriminate any group can come out here if they wish and visit the zoo."

Dan Hicks and Donna Jones don't agree with the gay lifestyle and they're concerned about exposing it to children. Dan Hicks: “And as a parent of three kids I would certainly want to be aware if there's a big homosexual demonstration so I can avoid that event."

Nancy McDonald: “I suspect there are gay men and women with family members and friends who happen to be gay that go to the zoo everyday."

You can find that story here. I was actually trying to find out when the Pride Parade is and that was the first thing that came up on my google search for "Tulsa Gay Pride".

Heaven forbid that people plan a day to the zoo; people that have just as much right as any of the "concerned" parents.

What's next, gay concentration indicators? "Duck and cover, kids, lavender alert!"

Oh, oh! Yes! Can we say "Book bannings"? I think we can.

I'm too sleepy to go look up the story now, but has anyone else heard about the controversy over homosexual themed books in the children's of public libraries?

Oklahoma's already talking about passing a whatever it is they pass that will take government funding away from libraries that stock books like that in the children's section.

God, I LOVE this part of the country! xd stare

Sad thing is I've been expecting an excuse to use that "lavender alert" thing since the Homeland Security system started.

Oh yes, book bannings. They've been trying to do that up here too. The Little Sister Bookstore in Vancouver, and I think Alberta had a little fuss about guidelines about literature in public schools. Canada isn't all the utopia, we're thought to be.

Why, of all places did the conservatives have to be based here? I'm ashamed to say that Stephen Harper (the federal conservative party leader) is a Calgarian.

I miss my freedom and speech. It's not even gone yet, but I still miss it.

I'm still a much bigger fan of the U.S. than, well, every other country.
