Bowie has a reputation as a 'bad' actor - yet I really can't see why.
He was fantastic in The Man Who Fell To Earth, wonderful in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and brilliant in Labyrinth and The Linguini Incident [the latter was held together by his performance]... so whats the beef?
Is it just a stereotypical attitude to rock stars acting, being passed on to David - or am I blind and he's really crap?

Well, actually, most people think he's a bad actor because he usually chooses roles where his characters act like they are catotonic xp

Anyhoo I've liked everything Bowie's been in that I've seen, Jareth in labyrinth scared me as a kid, Andy Warhol in Basquiat was hilarious, and I thought his cameo in Zoolander was quite cool to

I wouldnt say hes a bad actor - however it can be hard to get away from the fact hes david bowie - with some actors its easy to believe they are the character, this is helped by them not being a distinctive character in public life.
Bowie however, is bowie. Hence its hard for him to persuade critics that he is anyone but him.

I love him more than anyone I know, but you are blind and he isn't a good actor.
I will still see ANYTHING that he's in as long as I have access to it, and I will always want him in more movies, but even in his music videos....He just can't act.
He's more of an artist and his "acting" comes off as artistic expression. Which will never be good acting. Look at the videos again, he's just WAY TOO into what he's trying to do that it comes off as unnatural. But he's still the greatest thing ever, so it makes it all better xd

Bowie I think is a rather brilliant actor, maybe it's the bias speaking but he truely shined as the Goblin King, and how about his role in the Hunger and one of my favorites as Andy Warhol in Basquait... I was rather blah about that movie except when William DeFoe and Bowie showed up...and when a friend noted that Basquait is played by the blind guy from Becker. whee

I always thought he was "okay" but I never considered him either good or bad. I don't know, he's kind of an actor anyway, as he is -- so any roles in movies seem kind of forced.

DidymusBrush That could be it. Saying that, the only film I've seen him in in recent years was 'Zoolander' - and the less said about that, the better. xp Oh, come on. The Bowie scene is the entire reason to watch that film! Disqualified!

Although I wouldn't say he's going to win a Oscar anytime soon, he takes risks and does a good job

I don't think Labyrinth was highly praised at all. confused Not that lack of praise makes it a bad movie, really. I enjoy David Bowie acting but I think it is mostly because I enjoy looking at David Bowie. Yes, I am shallow like that. xp
