we were workin on interpreting this one part of the Great Gatsby in American Lit, nd it was talking about how Jay saw himself as the son of God, and we started to talk about Jesus, and one thing led to another.

When Jesus died on the cross, did he go to hell for three days before he was resurrected?

Proof:
1)The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

2)Technically hell doesn't exist yet. It won't exist until Jesus comes back to Earth. Right now all we have is Hades, but people are constanly calling it hell, so that became an improper synanym for it.

3)The Catholic Church believes Jesus went to purgatory. The Bible says in some places that he went to the place with the tortured tormented souls. I found a couple bible verses but I won't post them here. Not yet anyways.

4)As of right now, I think Jesus went to Hades for three days before he rose again, but I just wanted to get other opinions.

That is a good question. The truth is, we may never know. I don't think He went to Purgatory, because that place doesn't exist. It's more likely he went into either Paradise or Hades. Wherever He went, I'm sure He told everyone there to follow Him so that they could be saved. My personal opinion, He went to Paradise and got them to follow Him and now, when a Christ follower dies, instead of going to Paradise, we go directly to the Throne Room of the Almighty Jehovah. He may have had to go to hell because He took on the sins of the world, but He certainly didn't stay there. In summary, I think we'll just have to wait to find out what happened. For now, we should do what it takes to prevent people from rejecting Christ, thus awaiting their destruction.

1st Peter 3:18-20:

Christ also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely home to G-d. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. So he went and preached to the spirits in prison- those who disobeyed G-d long ago when G-d waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood.

According to these passages in 1st Peter, Y'shua (Jesus) died and went to hell where He preached to those who had died before Him.

We know that Y'shua(Jesus) took the keys of hell and of death away from satan when He died:

"I am He Who Lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hell and of Death." Rev. 1:18

Take what he said right before he died on the cross to the theif. He told him "You will be in paradise with me this day." *not quoting from bible but from memory... i can look it up later since i'm at work and can't*. Regardless, Jesus told the theif that he would be with him that day in heaven. And yes there is a hell and it is even now been put into place. I have heard arguements for both sides of this arguement, but since hell is a place that is absent from the presence of God, having God (Jesus) go there would make it no longer hell. So, the question then becomes, if Jesus did got to hell was it still hell? I am not asking that question because well I really seriously believe that Jesus went to heaven. I do believe that he opened the door to hell before rising from the dead.

I do not think we will ever know on earth, until Christ comes back and we can ask him... no one was with him when he died and so that three days of him being dead no one really knows what happened and where he was. I theroize that he was in heaven, paradise. Why else would he tell the theif that he would be with him in heaven that day.

actually, hell does exist. hell is where all of the unsaved souls go, and in the end, all of hell will be thrown into the lake of fire.

You should really rephrase it. Yes, Jesus did have to go to hell to retrieve the keys from Saten, but then he came back. He didn't stay there.

I went to a Babtist school for 7 years and never noticed that. Of course, they where good at hiding (leaving out) things that would make us question some scriptures.

If the Bible says it then it should be true. neutral Hm...

*gathers notes*

I have studied this subject before so hopefully my memory will help me out here. On the 3rd day Jesus descended into Hell and then he ascended from the dead. The interpretation of the passage is base on 1 Peter 3:19; "He [Christ] went and preached to the spirits in prison." Now according to the book of Luke, Chapter 16. The place of the Old Testament saints was known as "paradise" or "Abraham's Bosom". Jesus went there and proclaimed freedom and set captivity free. And let the Old Testament saints who were waiting there into paradise, into Heaven. He preached across the great gulf that separates paradise from hell and proclaimed that God's word was true. That the prophets spoken the truth and the Messiah has come and there judgment was secure. They were going to be judged eternally.

Important Verse About Abraham's Bosom: Luke 16:19-31
