I thought it would be a neat idea to have a thread about interesting or unusual wildlife we members have seen around either recently or in the past.
Since I'm obviously first here ( xd ), I'll give the reason why I began the idea for the thread: I was heading to the barn this weekend to feed the horses and saw a male pheasant on the side of the road. Not dead, not injured, not hit at all, just an absolutely gorgeous bird standing around. I can't tell why he was, but it was neat to see. His neck coloration was so dark that I thought he was a mallard until we passed and I saw his tail and head.Pic of what he looked like. That's essentially what he looked like, pose and everything, except darker-colored because it was raining out and he was a bit wet. I freaked and thought it was so cool to see one out and about like that. I don't think I've ever seen a live pheasant before.

Aw, come on. =D I'm sure you've seen -something- interesting out there....
Let's see... There used to be interesting birds back when we lived in Iowa. The chickadees, some of them, were absolutely huge compared to normal (I swear some were the size of robins!), and there were two red-bellied woodpeckers I loved to watch, especially thw male.

Hmm, 'spose I could tell ye about some of my fox sightings.
I found an earth down near the sewerage works [I know, lovely place, eh?], took a mental note of it and went back with my fox whistle. Crouched down near some long grass and had a bit of a squeak. It took about five minutes max for that fox to get interested; it was one of that years young and hadn't been educated in regards to whistles. He crawled under a barb-wire fence and trotted towards the noise until he was only about eight meters away 0_0 At which point he saw me, stared for a moment and then bolted. That was a good experience.
Last one was about three weeks ago. I was having a wander around a farm early in the morning [about 5:00-5:30] with the .22 looking for rabbits. Crested a bank and saw a fox wandering along the adjacent gully. Ducked down and got against a tree so he couldn't see me easy and got the whistle out; he didn't respond very well to it and just continued to wander around. He was in pretty bad condition; was absolutely riddled with sarcoptic mange, to the point where he didn't have any fur on his tail. He sat in the sun for a bit, had a scratch and dissapeared into some long grass. It probably would have been better to have put him out of his misery; mange won't cure by itself and is pretty agonizing, but the angle I was on was weird and the tree in the way.
Seen some odd rabbits too; caught a 'blue' rabbit [slate grey instead of brown], rabbits with white markings like blazes on their foreheads, and even saw a pure black one bolt into some bracken from a distance. And plenty of evidence to prove that wild rabbits are not the cute and fluffy critters that lots of people think they are. [In reality, they are horrid to one another.]

*Cringes* Mange, violence, and hunting...not everything I wanted to hear about. neutral
Eh, I'll shut up about the hunting, as I myself am not vegetarian and really don't have much a right to say anything.
Mange is a terrible thing. It's sad that that poor ol' fox had it. Animals just don't deserve that. As for the younger fox and such, that's neat. I've never been close to a fox, maybe seen one once.

I ounce saw a peacock climbing a pine tree, actually there were about four of them. One was white (my favorite) and another had a weird call, it sounded like someone was yelling help in a strange way. I also saw and sitting on someones doorstep.

Heh, that's wildlife for you though. They lead fairly rough lives. I hate mange, it's a disgusting and cruel way for an animal to die.

The only time I saw one "wild" was an escaped one from a farm we were passing.
Oh, another cool sighting I thought of! My dad, brother, and I were out at a park one autumn, when a flock of birds passed overhead. They were cranes, though I still can't figure out what species they were, all heading south together, at least 100-200 of them. That was awesome.

Well, that's still almost as good as a wild one, right? xd
Not really a rare or magnificent sighting, but there is one squirrel around our backyard I really like. I can tell it apart because it has a little nick of fur cut out from it's tail about halfway down. =)

Hi, I live in the mountains so I have the pleasure of seeing wildlife all the time, right now we have snow and I was going out to the barn and there was a family of elk in our field. Elk is the milder, we have had a black bear on our front porch. I have also seen a bald eagle now talk about excitement. I'm thankful for the wildlife and nature...

When I was kayaking some summers ago, a harbor seal starting following our kayaking group. The animal swam around and under us, too. It was really cool.

=D Neat!
The closest I've ever been to a bear at our house was a panic a while ago when one was sighted near where we live. That was yeeaars ago. I did, though, see bald eagles when we lived in Iowa. I can't remember if I've mentioned that. The harbor seal thing is really neat, too. 3nodding

THe lifeguard was blowing the whistle because he saw a large black figure under the water. It swam by me while I was pushing a boat and hit my leg! It was a manatee!
