I don't know, I thought this would be knid of a fun thread. I mean almost everyone who spends all their time writing dreams of one day having their work published.
Or maybe that's just me. . . .
Well, I always wondered. If I ever, by some magical twist of fate, actually did publish this story, what would the cover look like?
And I made one up.
My novel is called "fire thief" and I always pictured a image of my MC in front of an unlit candle. A quirky smile on her face. Whe you turn the book over to the back cover you would see the back of her and in one hand behind her back a small flame cupped in her hand.
Like she had stolen it?
I just wondered if anyone ever thought about it. If you have what does yours look like, in your mind? Do you want you work ever published? Is it just a dream, or do you want to *actually* try to get it published?

The writer rarely has any input as to the cover design... that's usually the publisher's domain.
However, it's still fun to try. :3 A lot of writers happen to be artists too... so let's give it a shot!

Being a comic artist writing a novel... of course I drew a cover. I haven't finished it yet because the stupid voice in the back of my head is demanding why I'm counting my chickens before they've hatched... I have a rough sketch of my cover with my WIP post of my story on Devinatart: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/42844776/It feels a little bland. I think I'll put another character into the picture.

Mine would probably show a person as a collage of other people, both male and female, like magazine cutout type things because my MC is a shapeshifter. But then again that has little to do with the actual plot. xD See, I have no idea.

I was just thinking about this a few hours ago. Personally any story I manage to finish and revise, I'd like to try and see if it'd get publish. So, if this one manages, then awesome.
After circulating through a few ideas I think I like this one best. A little blonde boy sits near the bottom of the book cover, smack dab in the middle. His knees are drawn to his chest and his face is hidden. Three tall shadows of three different shapes (a curvy female, a slim male, and a muscular male) and three different colors (dark purple, dark blue, and dark red) stretch out from him, each in different positions. The background is pure white. On the back there's an animal on each corner (white tiger, black lion, yellow wildcat, red wolf). On the spine there's a rose on the top and a lily on the bottom and title in between.

All very interesting ideas, I esp. like GhostlyMaiden's. For my cover, I would love to see a small girl with shoulder-length purple hair in the foreground of the cover, and the smouldering riuns of a city in the background. Somewhere in the ruins would be a shadowy woman with long flowing hair, her arms up in supposed victory. On the back cover would be two teenage girls, one with green hair in a braid and the other with wavy teal hair to her back; a tall man with blonde hair, arms crossed, would be between them. There would also be a fox boy popping his head from one of the corners of the cover, his expression ^_^ and giving the peace sign.

Mmm, covers, eh? I've thought about these quite a bit, actually. I have two cover designs, depending on whether I want to push the serious/angsty/gory half of my story, or the stupid/funny side. They don't mix very well.
COVER 1: A young boy, about 17, with light brown hair and thick glasses, wearing jeans and a gray hoodie, is holding another boy, younger, with pale skin, long shaggy black hair, and dressed in general emo style. I'm not talking about a loving embrace, it's more of a clinging-to-each-other-for-survival-because-they're-scared-as-hell type thing. Both are completely drenched in blood, splattered all over their clothes, smeared around their mouths, etc. Background is generally dark, shadowy, and ominous. Yay.
COVER 2: We see a scattered pile of Polaroid photographs. The topmost, central one shows an ice cream truck with the Good Humor logo crossed out and "Dangling Elk Incorporated" spray-painted on the side. A tall man with long dark hair in a ponytail is sitting on top of the truck. A shorter woman with long, kinky, bright orange-red hair and eclectic, colorful clothes that would take too long to describe is leaning against the hood of the truck, grinning happily. The aforementioned kid with glasses (minus the blood splatters) is leaning against the side of the truck, and the dark-haired kid is sitting on the ground. Other photographs behind this one include a close-up of a kitten, a cheese danish, the red-haired woman holding a handgun, the long-haired guy holding his hand up to prevent his picture being taken, a goat, etc., etc. General random funny stuff.
Yeeeah. Totally don't match up at ALL. XD I'm thinking about drawing one or both of these at some point.

mine was originally going to be from the POV of just one person, but the other characters wormed their way in...
Cover Idea 1: the MC who starts the ball rolling, Genji Natsuhara. Tan, has long, medium blue hair, parted on the right, and pulled back into a low ponytail. he wears a faded green army-like jacket, a black sleeveless t-shirt under it, khakis and brown lace up shoes. with him is Kanae Shin *points to her own av* only the coat has yellow lips that are trimmed in gold on one side...and Takuma Nekasa, who has shaggy brown hair, wears a white labcoat with a light blue polo shirt under it, and brown pants and shoes. he also has glasses.
Spine of cover 1: Chiharu Natsuhara, short, with reddish-brown hair, glasses, wearing some kind of oversized sweatshirt and jeans, has a chignon. She's walking towards the back cover, but is looking over her shoulder like she's looking at Genji, Kanae, and Takuma.
Back of Cover 1: Gawl Kudo, dressed similarly to Genji, only instead of a black sleeveless t-shirt, he has a funky string tanktop that has a bright red triangle on the front. his jacket has a bright orange patch on the left sleeve, and his hair is shorter than Genji's, and is blackish-blue. With him are Kouji Suzuki, who looks similar to Kanae, only he has longer hair, which is more of an emerald color, and is pulled back in a high ponytail. He wears black pants, black shoes, and a black tanktop, but over the tanktop, he has a yellow coat similar in design to Gawl's. Near him is Ryo Tanaka, a blonde who bears some resemblance to Takuma. Ryo has black shoes, black pants, a white long-sleeved T-shirt, a red cardigan that has thin white stripes, and a black hat that resembles a beret, but isn't a beret.
Cover Design 2: Pictures of all the afore mentioned characters, mostly silly things, like Haru and Gawl with squirtguns, Kanae getting sprayed in the face, Gawl eating, Takuma trying to dodge the camera, etc...

I had so much fun trying to draw my cover last year. I imagined a rose poking up out of a sand dune. ^o^ I ended up liking a photomanip I did better. Just cropped up and flipped around a picture of the gobi desert, but I looked pretty cool~
This year, I'm thinking a blood-splattered wall covered in heiroglyphics. I'd buy that if I saw it at Borders, wouldn't you? x3

Hmmm, for this year's novel, I definitely want a sunrise in it somewhere, since the title is "A Wish for Dawn". However, it's a bit of a pun, since the love interest's name is Dawn, so she'd have to be on the cover as well. Dual meaning for the win. XD
So probably a really pretty, sweet looking girl, watching the sunrise. Dawn at dawn. XD [/geek]
However, I don't want to mislead the readers into thinking it's a mushy romance, so I imagine I'd find a way to include some of the crazier aspects of the story into it, to. I'm just not sure how, yet.

Um... Mine would probably be a girl (my main character) hugging a large demonic puppy. Or something like that XD
