Sid couldn't sleep. Pacing his duplex had proved to be disasterous with the new length of his tail put in close proximity with all the bottles there were around. He'd taken one look at all the broken glass on the floor and walked out into the village at night. He could only safely wander so far with that singed psycho wolf on the lose, and though it was kind of cool at first that he could see so well in the dark, he was only reminded of the raging headaches daylight gave him. He kept a very odd schedule to begin with, but the thought of being forced into nocturnal habits by his damn fish eyes depressed him even more than the thought of cutting slits in the backs of his favorite band t-shirts. He still couldn't bring himself to do that, so he was out in nothing but a pair of jeans modified to fit his tail.

He glowed in the dark even more now thanks to all the new scales and the... thingy dangling from the fin on his back felt very odd as it swayed when he walked. He felt like he was walking through a fog, everything felt surreal even without any help from drugs or alcohol. His old friends weren't going to help him, and acknowledging that only made him feel worse. He just kept walking, all his worries and fears nipping at his rubbery heels along the way.

Not knowing where the hell he was going, he finally settled for just sitting down at the base of a tree. Being able to bend his knees without fear of horrible pain wasn't enough to cancel all the other s**t. He conditioned himself to watch the tail, but the fin on his back was a new thing to avoid hitting. He winced as he was reminded about that. Okay, so he couldn't exactly sit back against the tree, but he could sit under it, where it was at least a little darker. Where walking failed, there was always just brooding.

Alec's wheelchair had arrived at his duplex quite promptly, which would've been surprising if he had given a damn. It looked like a regular chair save for the plush-lined spaces cut out of the back for his fins to protrude from while he sat in it. For awhile he'd just stared at it, sizing up the hunk of metal and procrastinating trying it out. Alas, he couldn't spend his entire life in his duplex alone as his stomach had made this noticeable. Amaya's appreciated stash of edibles had indeed lasted him awhile but now that they were finished and his new chair had arrived, he had no choice but to venture out for food on his own.

The moment he rolled out of the threshold he felt like dying. Thankfully no one was about seeing as it was rather late at night but he still felt as if the world was staring at him directly. Swallowing down the knot on his stomach, he braced his arms on the circular handles and rolled off towards the cafeteria.

Or so he'd planned.

You see, a wheelchair is not an all-terrain vehicle and this choice of exotic terrain wasn't making it easy for the teen at all.

He'd curse loudly whenever his wheel slipped on a patch of mud, got caught on a pebble or wound up in the grass. This continued for quite some time until he found himself approaching a peculiar light show in the distance, but before he could get a better look at what the luminescent sight was all about, his a wheel became entangled in a glob of soft soil. The boy cursed again, not bothering to lower his volume to compensate for the time of night and his voice sounded sickeningly more malicious than what was thought to be normal.

The nose send chills down Sid's spine, making new fin fan out just enough to make the lure hit him on the back. The lack of control would have been annoying if not for the sounds of what could very well be Annie in the village. He rose and listened, ready to see just how far he could run. His legs might have been better, but the changes had done nothing for his blackened lung. Good to know he still didn't have much chance of escape if he came to that.

He was confused once he made out a few choice curse words, so he pushed his better judgement aside and moved forward to investigate. The wheelchair came as something of a surprise, but not quite as much as the sharky form in it.

"Alec?" he said.

God he hoped he got his name right. He'd come very close to calling him 'Alan' as it was.

The broad, wedge-shaped head of the young teen snapped up when he heard the ethereal voice from the darkness and he tensed in his chair. Although his sense of sight was very good at pinopointing major details in the scenery at night, people and objects appeared as silhouettes most of the time. This is how the form of the man looked to him at first, the dark outline illuminated by tiny pin point lights aligned along the extremities. Although his arms were poised over the wheel rims of the chair, he knew he wouldn't be able to get away fast enough. The person was unhindered. He had legs.

".... U....Uhn?" He hesitantly responded after recouperating from being choked up. Familiar but not. The sharkboy narrowed his eyes and glared into the shadows. Whoever it was, he wanted them to leave him alone.

Sid took a few steps closer, but seeing the teen was even toothier than he was he left a safe distance between them. He'd seen first hand what animal instincts could drive a person to, a grim reminder he was going to have similar problems soon enough. Nothing bubbled up in his mind just yet, though his tail back in what might have been attempt to... what? Steady him? Propel him? He still didn't know what good it was.

Remembering his changes, and the darkness, he added, "It's me, Sid."

Ha had to squint further to make out the rest of him but was surprised when he heard the confirmation of the person's identity. It was Sid alright but man, he was really looking... awkward. He didn't mean to stare but he did, his changes were too different for him not to take notice. The man's face itself was barely recognizable.

"Uh... ay." He finally grunted, expression washing into blank indifference once again.

Sid pointed with what was now a grossly elongated webbed finger.

"You, uh, need any help?"

He should have known better, especially given the fact he would have vehemently declined any offer for help. It seemed like the least he could do after making the kid push a lame octopus around for the better part of an afternoon. That was kind of ironic now, in a warped way.

Alec's biceps flinched as his grip on the wheelchair rims tightened with Sid's honest curtosy. He felt sick all of a sudden, the naucious feeling strongly panging in his empty stomach. He felt a wave of cold run over his body and yet his core was burning hot- and growing hotter with every passing second. He didn't realize he was clenching his jaw so strongly, he might have noticed his twisted expression if he was looking at himself in a mirror at the time.

He said nothing for what seemed like a long time before completely brushing off the offer. "Ye f'get ye cane?" The teenager reached down and idly yanked a gob of overturned dirt and grass from the spokes of his wheel before turning his head sharply to the side and rolling in an indirect route closer to his fellow aquatic man.

The look on Alec's face was enough to make Sid take a step away. The only thing that kept him from retreating further was he had the advantage over the teen and his fused legs. Unless the shark's instincts could drive him to wheel over for a feeding frenzy, he was fine, It was horrible, but it was comforting. That, and he knew damn well he looked just as disturbing.

"The cane?" He laughed lightly. He really didn't want Alec closer after that last display, but he managed to stay put. His tail flicked to one side, violently disagreeing with his decision, and the frustrated grunt he made over it could have misconstrued in any number of ways. "Left it back at my place, yeah."

He could see the dance that was occurring between the two. The fact that Sid had looked bent on retreating as Alec was approaching was probably what pissed him off even more, in hindsight. He held his temper though, patiently wheeling over until he was within a few feet of the man. Despite his attitude, his curiousity still flourished somewhere in his mind and it was for this reason why he hadn't cursed Sid to the next life and been on his way already. He still wanted to see what those weird lights were, they were almost mesmorizing.

"Like a' chris'ms tree..." He breathed when he realized the shiny dots were part of Sid's skin, having never heard of a glowing animal before save for fireflies. And Sid was no firefly.

He sat up abruptly once he realized he might have bothered Sid by pointing out an obvious flaw, looking rther uncomfortable in his seat. "Ye like m'new wheels?" It probably would've been better if he'd avoided the subject altogether, but why? That's what the fish-man was staring at anyways. Him, and his godamn ugly body in a wheelchair.

"Uh, yeah..." Calling attention to the lights indeed made Sid's already gruff voice turn bitter. "It's great."

He folded his arms over his chest, but the webbing on his fingers proved to be thin enough to allow those scales to shine through them. Drawing his fingers together felt even weirder, so he just accepted the fact he was going to glow in the dark no matter what he did and cheered himself up- once again- with the fact he could walk when the youngster couldn't. He may have been a fishy, toothy abomination... but so was Alec, who was even worse off.

He felt guilty for feeling better about that, but if nothing else he had a chance of hiding the conflicting emotions. He wasn't sure if he succeeded, but he tried to keep the conversation going, incredibly awkward as it was. "Better than Billy's," he said. "Not even a speck of rust."

He tried to sound encouraging, but in his current state of mind that proved impossible.

"Ye..." Alec knew his words would result in unpleasant feelings on Sid's part but the truth was he really didn't care. In fact at that point in time, he felt more like egging the poor mutated man on rather than letting the die. Thankfully the youngster had enough sense to shut himself up this time.

The awkwardness of the meeting was hard to ignore indeed. It was always hard speaking to someone who'd just changed, the emotions ran strong and one had to tip-toe about with idle conversation. It didn't help any that Alec was an entirely new man now because of his ordeal... at least he was acting as such.

Recalling why he'd braved the outside in the first place, he wondered if he should even bother offering company to the older man. He didn't want to see or talk to him but he couldn't deny that he was his friend. Breaking away from his mental maze with a growl of his stomach, he looked at Sid sideways in a cold expression. "Ye 'ungreh o' somethin? Wan' teh ge' a bite?"

Sid wanted company just as little as Alec did in that moment, but staying alone would likely be a bad thing, and going back to his duplex would only mean cleaning up. Even incredibly forced social interaction was better than that. "Might as well."

It was about time he discovered how much messier he was going to have to eat.

Alec irritadely fidgetted with the towel on his lap before swinging his chair around in a quick 180 towards the direction of the cafeteria. He was assuming Sid would follow at least at his own pace, not realizing that his changes had made him more maneuverable on land than he ever was as a human. It made him wonder how Sid could've lived knowing he was at a diadvantage; cane or wheelchair, they were both aides and objects that reminded of a constant disability.

He had nothing to say, so he remained silent and brooding.

Sid was cheered a little by the fact he could easily keep up with the wheelchair, and once he realized that he even had to slow down a little to keep from walking ahead in his brief moment of enthusiasm.

The silence stretched, as he couldn't think of what to say to break the tension. Everything still felt surreal in the wake of his own changes, from the way his tail swayed as he walked to the faint light the new scales cast over the things they passed before it was drowned in the light of the cafeteria. He opened the door for Alec, but still had no bright ideas on what he could say to make things even remotely better.

Without thinking, he walked ahead of Alec towards the food. He was, of course, already taking it for granted.
