If you want to contribute to this journal, like you have ideas for the storyline or whatever, either PM me or post in the store and clear it with me first. I still get last say on how it goes.

<> ~ In that same vein, unauthorized posts will be promptly deleted, and the perpetrator will be given a warning. I'm not totally unreasonable, though. We'll probably work something out if it's part of the story. Two unauthorized posts and the Black List Gremlin comes for you.

Last call: my shift is finally over. I’ve felt kind of strange this evening; I have been quieter; more contemplative during this evening’s duties. Maybe because it was a slow day, or maybe because what that drunkard said to me early on this evening really did ring true.

The man was not a usual – they typically know to curb their tongue when I tell them they’ve had one too many. He wore the uniform of a common army officer, but his insignia and sour attitude marked him as a guardsman for the new Reagent. This, of course, already struck a raw nerve for me, but I did my best to ignore the bad memories and go about my business.

He came into the bar steamed about something, which is always a warning sign for me, and proceeded to get completely sloshed. I stopped him before he passed out or picked any fights, but by then he was loudly ranting about the politics within the castle – one of my least favorite subjects.

“You’re an ex-toad, aren’t you?” he slurred, mistaking me for a member of the late King’s green-caped police/militia. “You remember how safe the streets used to be. How no one had to lock their doors, even here in the Trade District. But now the city’s in turmoil, nay, all of Angaiâth!

“The King is dead, our “marvelous” new Reagent has no idea what he’s doing and sits on his hands most of the time, and you toads have been picked to shreds by him so that he has a big enough swarm of guards that he can sleep well at night. Meanwhile the rest of you were left out in the dust to find piss-poor jobs like, say, Bouncer for the Three Coins Inn, (here he was referring to me) and the whole city is falling apart with nothing but a handful of vigilante scampering around to keep the peace.

“All this because our “oh so beloved” and hopefully dearly departed Ex-Captain of the Guard was too busy with the castle’s maid to notice the King being carried off and filleted by the Mad Witch and her scum. That b*****d better be rotting somewhere for what he has done.”

I quietly ushered him out the door and insisted he go home, a most unusual reaction on my part given the extremely rude things he was saying. In my younger and more arrogant days, he would have been a bloody heap on the floor by the first few sentences, but this time, I did nothing. Maybe because I’ve grown accustomed to the drunken ravings of my customers, but it’s more likely because he was right: it was entirely my fault.

Now in retrospect, I wonder what he would have done if I had told him that I was the Captain of the Guard, Kosshi, and now a down-and-out bouncer for a seedy little tavern in the Trade District. Would he have laughed in my face? Ranted at me some more? Drawn his weapon on me? Sometimes the hardest reaction to read is that of a drunken man.

The part that really bothers me is that most of what he said was true, except for a few important details. Yes, I did have an affair with the Maid, but we made public our feelings and we were going to marry soon thereafter. Even the King gave us his blessing, but the news was washed under with the crisis of his capture and no one remembered. What’s worse, my beloved, whose name was Dotsu, was captured along with the King. The other important and mostly overlooked detail is that there was a very strong combined effort to retrieve the King from the forests of the Mad Witch and her forces. It was not just a search party in the woods; it was a full-scale battle. Many of the old guardsmen were lost in the botched rescue, and the King and my fiancée were killed in the attempt.

The Reagent, upon assuming the throne, spun the news of the death so that it was my fault and unceremoniously kicked the old guardsmen out. Removed from rank and destitute, we all had to go somewhere. This is where we ended up.

Despite our setbacks, I am proud of my guardsmen. If there was one thing I taught them, it was this. No matter the circumstances, we must always press on. We all must do our part to keep this world safe. For me, this means I must return to the streets and keep the peace.

It’s what she would have wanted.

You overhear a lot of gossip from low-lifes when you work as the bouncer for a run down tavern in the middle of the most wretched part of the city. Every night I hear it, and every night at 3 AM, once my shift is over and all of the drunks have been shooed out, I step out on the streets again, ready to make the city I live in just a little safer. It's the least I can do anymore.

Tonight's lead sounded particularly interesting, and just may have been something big, but as I look at the trinket I got tonight as my quarry, a simple playing card, it looks as if it was just another false alarm.

I overheard these two gamblers in the corner talking about a new grand prize down at the local gaming hall. Apparently the Thieves' Guild brought it in from an Apprentice's training mission this week, and supposedly it was stolen from the Mad Witch herself!

Stage I: Card

This is Kiera in her first stage of development. She doesn't look like much more than an ordinary playing card, except for the faint whisperings and hazy images of her that Kosshi sees in his mind.

The dark skin, the short tousled hair... the willowy figure... OMG it's odd just how similar she looks to my girlfriend. She's another fellow Gaian, in fact, she introduced me to Gaia in real life. I think I'll use that similarity in my RP... fufufuu.
