Mahiri was heartbroken. Completely and utterly so. His mate, his love, had been taken from him in an act of such insensate cruelty, of such violent nature... He shuddered to think about it.

The scent and sight of her blood was imprinted in his memory, but so were many things he valued, like her sweet scent, her voice and her beautiful blue eyes, of which were a gift to their many children.

That was another thing he had to be grateful for. His family. Though he'd lost Bakhti he'd gained eight children, eight lives to care for and eight little lives that had a part of Bakhti's spirit. He smiled weakly to himself.

Today however he was on a search for one of his older children, one of the very few that had actually stayed with him and his mate. Malaika was exceptionally sweet and Mahiri felt bad for leaving her, but she had Auri and Bakhti had to be found...

He wondered a little further, near to the den. This was what he was dreading. "Malaika.." He called softly.

"Daddy?" Even though she was no longer a cub, and had grown into a beautiful adolescent, she still refered to Mahiri as Daddy. It was one of the only remnants of childhood innocence she had managed to cling to, despite all that Mbaya had done to her when she was younger. "Daddy where have you been?"

Malaika emerged from the cave, stopping half way so as not to bring the scars on her back into the sun's light. A concerned look was on her face. Although Mbaya was long gone, she wasn't fond of being left alone. Auri's own family was growing up fast, so she couldn't blame him for spending more time with them than he did with her anymore. She knew why Mahiri had left though, and the fact that he had returned seemingly without Bakhti worried her even more. "Did you find mummy?"

Seeing her pelt, so similar to Bakhtis... And her sweet voice. She was yet to know, and he hated what he was about to tell her, he knew it would affect her terribly.

A few tears dribbled down his face. "Malaika." A pause, his breathing irregular. "I bring some... bad news." His maroon eyes never left hers, as he tried to comfort her somehow. "Bakhti...Your mother..."

He hated this, so much. He hated even thinking about it, so said it without doing so. They were just words.

"She has been killed."

Malaika's face remained blank, and completely motionless, as all the colour drained from it. Her eyes remained fixed on her father, looking for the smallest sign that he was mistaken. She knew it couldn't be a joke, but maybe he was wrong?

In her heart though, she could tell by Mahiri's current state that it was true. She had never seen him cry before, and he had always been the one to dry her tears. It didn't sink in at first, it just couldn't. Her silvery-grey eyes gleamed as tears threatened, but they wouldn't come. She fought them back with all her strength. For once, she would be the strong one, with the shoulder to cry on.

Her legs quivering as she struggled to stay upright, she moved towards Mahiri. A single tear managed to escape, and roll down her cheek. She didn't know what to do or say, so she just buried her head in his mane and nuzzled into his face. It was at that point that her strength failed, and she burst into tears. "How could this happen?" She whispered between sobs, at a loss to even imagine someone killing her mother.

He moved foward to accept her embrace and let out a deep sigh. A sigh of one plagued by greif and riddled with the memory of the truamatic event. Mahiri failed to understand how Malaika could be so strong. She was so sensetive, so caring, and overall, extremely fond of her mother.

Perhaps the news hadnt quite hit her. She was lucky in the respect that the horrible event hadnt been embedded in her memory, along with the smell of Bakhtis blood. Shivering slightly, her pressed his maw into her shoulder gently, holding back more of the tears that appeared in his maroon eyes.

"I'm not sure who she was." He snarled. "But a vicious creature, simply attacked your mother. She was said to be her sister or something, and even carried a cub." He nearly choked on the next few words. "It was so violent. I'm glad you didnt have to see it."

Malaika's whole body shook as she tried to picture what had happened. She imagined a huge, rabid lioness with silvery claws and jagged teeth. It was the stuff nightmares were made of, and it was almost unbearable to even imagine such a monster setting upon her mother.

Struggling to swallow the lump in her throat, she lifted her head and leaned slightly away from Mahiri, her eyes desperatly searching her father's face for answers. "Couldn't...couldn't you stop her?" Malaika had always seen Mahiri as invincible, and someone that would always be there for her. But in a way, the current situation brought back memories of what Mbaya had done to her. Mahiri had arrived all too late then, and maybe this was the case again, although she hoped and prayed that it wasn't.

Tears dribbled down his white face, clinging to his fur. Maroon eyes peered from dark chocolate muddy pools. Holding Malaika close he hushed her gently, half in an attempt to comfort himself. "I wish I could have done something, Malaika..." Maybe he should have, but no, he protected his children, he did the right thing, though one of his poor sons was blinded. Rage was rampant within him, but showed only as tears for the moment. "I had to protect your brothers and sisters.."

A smile broke out on his maw, but was tainted with sadness. "All eight of them."

Malaika didn't like seeing her father cry, as it was so unlike him. Obviously it just couldn't be helped in this situation, which made her fight harder to fight the tears back. She would be strong for her dear father, as he was probably hurting more than anyone right now.

At the mention of her brothers and sisters, Malaika's strength faltered a little. She had totally forgot that her mother had been pregnant, and now those poor cubs would grow up having never had the chance to know her. And there was eight of them, so he would be very hard for Mahiri to cope. Of course, he wouldn't have to cope alone. The golden lioness managed the smallest of smiles. "I'm glad that they are OK. I just wish..." She trailed off, again not knowing what to say.

He let out a rugged sigh, maroon eyes drifting shut, he still held his daughter close in comfort. Eight, eight new tiny lives to protect, eight lives he was sure Bakhti would have died for. He didn't exactly know what Malaika was going to say next, but he wished so many thing, he wished that something had gone different, he wished he could have fought off the lioness, he wished he had known what to do.. But this was how it had happened, and there was no going back, never.

He had to look foward, he had to stay stong. For his family. He wanted Bakhti to look down on them from the stars and be proud. He would know which star was her, he would simply look for the brightest.

During the solemn silence that followed, Malaika wondered how they would ever cope with eight young cubs. It then occured to her that her father hadn't mentioned where the cubs now were. "Where are the cubs? Did you move them to somewhere safe?" She was sure the answer would be yes, but regardless, she actually really wanted to see them.

"Yes, of course" He spoke softly, head held aloft suddenly as he thought of the eight small forms. "They're beautiful." He knew Malaika would want to see them, and he would love to take her, maybe it would ease the pain a little or take her mind off things. Eventually everything would be okay, but the pain before the healing was maddening despair. A weak smile spread across his face as he promised his angel one thing. "It'll be okay.."

When Mahiri said that everything was going to be OK, Malaika believed him. "I believe you...it'll just take a lot of time." Saying that, she moved to lean into her father, nuzzling her head into his thick mane. When she lifted her head, she herself managed a small smile. "Can I see them, please?" She was sure that it would be painful to see them, especially those that resembled her mother. At the same time though, she was sure that it would comfort her to see that they were OK.

He knew how brave Malaika was being, and opened his maw suddenly. He wanted to say that her mother would be proud, but he couldnt bring himself to use the past tense so quickly. He still felt as if his mate was here.. Somehow, somewhere, just lost and without her family. Shuddering gently he agreed with his daughter. It would be fine, eventually, it would be okay, it would have to be, he would be okay, for the sake of his family. At her question he nodded sweetly. "Of course you can see them, they're not far from here, being guarded, of course." He smiled shakily. "This way?"

[We can just say they went to visit the cubs from here? Sorry this has been such a LONGGG RP D:]

Malaika tilted her head as she saw that her father was about to say something. When it didn't come, she didn't nudge him to see what it was that he was going to say. Most likely it was something to do with her mother, and so for now, it may have been better left unsaid.

"I'm going to miss her daddy..." With that, she followed her father to where the cubs were, her heart completely broken. It would probably take her entire life to get over such a huge loss, but with her mother living on in her new siblings, she was sure that things would get a little bit better over time.

(( xd I agree. heart RP finished. ))
