Meroko cried for herself. It has been two weeks since it happened, but she wasn't the type to get over her feelings so easily. She knew it was foolish, but it didn’t matter. Izumi was her first...well, the first love she could remember anyway. It wasn’t a serious relationship, but it still meant the world to her. She pampered her new partner, but she still resented him somewhat. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t his fault. Izumi was her only partner.
Takuto followed the weak sobs through the Shinigami courtyard. There were often short breaks, so he needed to rely on instinct to find its source. What drove him was mysteriously nothing. It wasn’t like him at all to worry about the problems of some unknown stranger. Either way, this was no time to worry about the feelings of others. His own feelings had been trampled on.
He had only known her for two weeks, but there was something special about Meroko Yui. From the start, the girl lifted his heart from the dark place he had thrown himself in when he was among the living. She had told him she loved him, and he honestly believed her! It wasn’t fair that she belonged to someone else. That Shinigami Izumi...he didn’t deserve such a loving girl. Takuto had caught them kissing, and he knew he had been lied to. The rejection was too great. Takuto knew that he had to forget her, she was already bound to the yellow Dog Shinigami that she so affectionately called Izumi-Kun...
It was Her...
Takuto approached her slowly. He knew that she probably didn’t want him around. She was crying for Izumi, not Takuto. She would never cry for Takuto.
He knew that, but regardless, he wanted to be there for her. In his guilty mind, he had not given up. He wanted to steal her heart away. Perhaps by being there in her time of need, she would realize how much better he was for her. This was however, only in his secret mind. He did not know of its existence, and he did not know what it meant.
Meroko looked up at him. Though there seemed to be a sense of distance in his aura, a look of welcoming filled his face. Izumi was distance too, but Izumi never looked at her that way. He never looked at her so desperately; like that he needed her...
“Seasons changing,” he said, putting his hand on the cold stone bench, brushing off the snow as though he didn’t see her tears.
“Yeah,” she replied. Her voice was weak, and she probably wouldn’t have needed to reply at all if Takuto hadn’t see her lips move. Though words were exchanged, he still looked at her with a sad smile. It made her feel guilty.
“What are you doing all the way out here,” he asked, breaking the awkward silence that surrounded them.
“Just thinking to myself...you know... everything-”
“About Izumi?” Takuto interrupted. She paused. He knew. Her guilt began to swell again. How could he still look her in the eye?
“Yes.”
“I could...” he choked...” I could tell you to move on or something, but that wouldn’t be right. You need to follow your heart. I know it's cheesy, but when you like someone, you can’t help it. Even if that person doesn’t realize how important they are to you, you have to keep loving and supporting them no matter what..."
Takuto didn't realize his words' impact, nor did he realize that he was telling her the words of advice that he himself ignored at the time. Had he taken them, perhaps things would be different.
“Listen Meroko. Chase after Izumi. You need to. I want you to know Meroko that I-”
“TAKUTO,” Meroko screamed in delight.
“Eh?"
“Look Takuto...the moon!"
She was right. It had hidden itself all night but the clouds had shifted; the two were now sitting under a beautiful full moon.
“Takuto, if it's not too much trouble, will you please stay with me...even just for a while”?
Though she did not want to admit it, his words spoke to her. She had never heard such words she could trust in. She didn't let him finish, but it wasn’t because of the moon. Meroko knew the feeling. If he had continued, she would have surely abandoned Izumi-Kun.
She vowed that after Izumi, she would never love again.
“Yeah, I'll stay," said Takuto. Then he laughed. Meroko didn’t know why.
It was the last time they would ever be this blissful. Everything after that would be a short-lived mistake.

What a great fanfic! It really touched my heart, as if that story was part of the real Full Moon Wo Sagashite. But too bad that won't happen, since Takuto doesn't really pay attention to Meroku. sad wink
