Rule number 1: No harrassing, no asking for Asura or any offspring that Asura produces; behavior of this sort makes me cranky and irritable. Please ask my permission before posting if you do not own a crystal, are not a friend, or are not PaperGhost or Khel.

Rule number 2: This is a roleplaying area only, if you wish to post please do so in character. I will ask you to edit your post if this is done incorrectly or if you make my eyes bleed with chat-speech. I am not a grammar-spelling nazi but I do have my limits.

Rule number 3: Praise the talents of Khel and PaperGhost or be killed in the most vile manner possible. heart Thank you and that is all until someone does something that merits another rule to be added.

Na'ir is a strict Kederi who keeps the rest of the household in line whenever Ourania is away at the Temple. He often flies her to different areas, always muttering to himself about being the resident airplane.

Earlier: A child of the Urn'dele Kederi. A sweet but shy little boy, he spends his time drawing and generally creating things. He enjoys meeting new people, but his quietness and overall stoic countenance make it hard to obtain new friends. His name literally means bright one in Arabic.

User Image

Amaranthis is a .exe with a challenging attitude. She believes that she must be better than those around her or suffer some dire, made up consequences. She does have a softer side, however, which appears when she is occasionally helping Freya take care of the kids in the house.

User Image

Freya is a surprisingly tidy little winged-dustling who keeps order in the house when Ourania is absent. She enjoys quiet time to herself, not a commodity in the place where she resides, but will act as surrogate mother and referee if the need arises.

User Image

Odin is the opposing side of the coin to his housemate Freya, messy, clumsy and still a child at heart, he has a kind disposition and a protective attitude. He tries to bring the shy population of the house together so that they won't be as alone anymore.

User Image

Edward is an extremely shy, uncertain, stuttering example of the household. He does not like to share his opinion, leaving that to his "sister" Nili instead. The green Kiku is an intellectual, and he enjoys learning new facts that he can teach to the younger or at least more open individuals in the house.

User Image

The opposite of her brother, Nili is a fiery example of her species, constantly in fights with others or rearing to fight. She does have a softer side which she displays rarely and only under great duress, but otherwise the bubble-adorned Kiku is all tooth, claw, and rapier-sharp wit.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

A baby fire dragon that requires plenty of attention, Aristarkhos is the main distraction in the house. He is constantly cranky and snarling for attention or food. The only time he calms is after a large meal when he is sleepy, at which time Ourania can actually hold him without fear of being mauled.

Previously Baby Urn'dele Kederi.
Vashiel is a shy little andro who has a very affectionate nature. He loves his fellow Kederi brothers and is easily talked into Raziel's wacky plans because of this.
Raziel is a blobby handful who likes biting both living and inanimate objects. He particularly likes gnawing on Na'ir, whom he views both as competition and brother in arms... err... brother in biting?

Ourania's home has not been illustrious in quite some time, ever since she received her first pet to be precise. The structure lies on a flat plain near a forested area rife with ancient oaks. A network of old, dirt trails pave the way to the house and the only well-worn one is the path from the backdoor to the gardens.

It is a mere two storeys but stretches out long enough, an approximate two acres, to house an assortment of housemates and guests in a semi-comfortable fashion. The exterior is a vision of slightly chipping violet paint and clean (except for the occasional snout/paw print) windows. The house possesses four bedrooms, a small library/writing room, kitchen, living room, a tiny laundry room tucked in near the kitchen and an ominous attic. All floors are hardwood so any 'accidents' are easy to clean. The only exception to this is the master bedroom, which actually has pale carpeting. The living room is mostly untouched, it is the writing room that shows the most recent signs of life. A single desk amidst towering bookshelves is covered in scrolling papers and pencils of various shapes and wear. In the kitchen there is a faint burned smell that tells of failed cooking attempts.

There are three separate gardens in back, one for herbs, one for vegetables, and the last for floral arrangements which hardly ever reach blossoming due to Odin's frenetic love of digging. A short fence around the perimeter keeps the smaller or younger housemates from subsequently ruining her faraway neighbors' yards as well.

Always there is the sound of laughter and music pouring forth from the open windows. Chimes near the front door call to weary strangers, inviting and full of poignancy that can only be half understood.

Welcome to the home of Ourania and her family.

Ourania had been busy all that day, organizing books at her workplace and studying summoning runes in between. It was a hard job, supporting herself and her extended family of pets while trying for the right to earn an Elysian from the Temple where she practiced; still, it was not as disagreeable as her previous job as a grocery clerk had been: customers of the food industry were decidedly more unpleasant than those who meandered in a bookstore environment.

So she dragged herself home, a book bound in brown-leather with golden arcane symbols floating in and out of existence across its surface held loosely in her hand. When she arrived at her front door, mumbling vague spells under her breath in order to recall them at a later date, she realized that she wasn't certain what pocket of her knapsack the key to the front door resided in. Ourania sighed, shifting the tome to the crook of her arm so that one hand was free to grasp her backpack while the other sifted through it. She yawned, trying to cover her mouth but lacking the extra palm to slap over it, and as such, spotted the pristine white note tucked into the side of her doorway. Frowning, she set her pack down, placing the rented book atop it, and plucked the note away to read it.
Her brow furrowed at the loopy writing, not recognizing it for a moment before her eyes widened. "Oh..." she whispered faintly as the door opened, revealing an uncertain Na'ir, his rainbow colored hair tousled and his large blue eyes wondering.

"Lady, someone dropped a crystal off for you." he said quietly, an army of three Kiku, all nearly full-grown and wagging their tails, behind him.

Ourania forgot to remind him to call her mother, her brain was stunned into merely allowing the young boy to take her hand and lead her into the house.

It was on her table, glowing faintly with streamers of incandescent color floating around its exterior. Its glow made an aurora borealis against the walls and ceiling, a faint hum emanating from it like the beginning of an aria. It was light and color and sheer beauty.

"What is it?" the little boy asked carefully, looking up at the novice summoner curiously.

But the woman of the house could only stare in awe, and once more utter the soft exhalation of, "Oh..."

The novice summoner had been staring at the crystal for the better part of the day now, rousing only when Amaranthis snapped at her to feed everyone and when Na'ir asked for help with a portrait of Freya he had been working on.

"I can't get the wings right." he complained in an unusually child-like manner, displaying the erased lines from before. "Will you help me?"

Ourania had blinked out of her stupor of watching the crystal to smile at the young boy. "Of course, dear. Hop up on a chair and grab your pencil."

He grinned, obviously relieved that he had managed to snap her back to reality, and went to find his utensil, small feet beating an irregular tattoo across the wood floors.

Ourania watched him go, her gaze slipping back to the Elysian when he disappeared into a room. She still couldn't quite believe that she had managed to qualify for such a privilege, her own Elysian, her own Asura; it was almost too much to bear all at once. She looked at the note again, slightly crumpled from being in her hand since she had first recovered it at her door, and re-read the message.

She looked back at the crystal, finger tapping on the edge of the lacquered table as she waited for it to do something extraordinary. The summoner startled when she felt someone pull at her sleeve, glancing around to see Na'ir with his pencil at ready. She smiled, feeling slightly guilty that she hadn't noticed him immediately, and pulled him onto her lap. "Okay, let's see... you need to make a line this way then curve, sort of like a flower petal..."

The crystal sparkled a bit brighter as the sun began its descent, giving them proper lighting for drawing well into the night.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 14, 2005 4:30 pm

It had been a trying past few days for Ourania and her family, the bills had recently been paid and money was tight. She had managed to entrust the crystal with Na'ir and the rest out the household, though very reluctantly, while she went to work.

It was between serving a haughty, red-nosed little man his coffee and trying to find out where a specific book she had been looking for had snuck off to, that she realized she had yet to pick a name for her Elysian. The bookstore clerk froze while pouring the decaffeinated liquid, inciting shrill shrieks when the plump customer found it running down the table and onto his lower extremities.

After a bout of very serious apologizing and an on-the-house cup of coffee, Ourania found herself sitting near the baby naming section with a pile of books steadily growing on the floor around her. Absorbed in the words, the summoner did not notice the curious looks she received from fellow employees, mumbling under their collective breath about how surprising it was, that they hadn't even known she had been dating. Gossip would quickly spread without the young woman's knowledge, and she would be later be frazzled and bewildered when an elderly lady and her husband asked her how far along she was while making kissy noises at the flat-expanse of her stomach.

But for now, she was busy, seeking to name a creature that had only a crystal for a corporeal form. "This should not be so hard." she mumbled to herself. She found a few names that she rather liked and wrote them down on a slip of paper, tucking it away in her pocket to ask for different opinion's when she arrived home.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"I like this one." Na'ir said, pointing to an exotic name on the list. "How do you say it?"

"GWENN-hwih-varr." Ourania responded, frowning thoughtfully as she lay on her stomach against the matress of her bed, feet kicking steadily in the air as she looked at her crystal. "Do you think it suits her?"

"No." The boy responded, smiling slightly. "But it's a pretty name."

The summoner sighed, rolling over onto her back against the blankets and making a face at the ceiling. "I'll never find a name..."

Odin, his eyes narrowed in rare concentration, was actually looking as though he had an idea. He made a slight sound, and Ourania turned to him hopefully, snorting when the enlightened noise turned out to be a yawn. "You aren't thinking, you're sleeping." She accused, hurling a pillow at him which he swiftly caught and began to chew on. "Don't you dare..." she warned.

Amaranthis rolled her eyes at the activities and feigned boredom while she continued to play with Aristarkhos, who was trying to catch her candy-swirled tail with his mouth. Whenever he came close enough, she'd lift it just out of his reach, smirking at his aggravated reaction.

Nili and Edward were having a heated discussion of meows and snarls in the corner of the room, obviously angry about something. "If either of you draw blood in my room, I'll finish the job." Ourania warned. "The only reason you're in here is to pick a name, just one name!"

Inauro opened one eye to look at the summoner distastefully. She had interrupted his nap on her pillow.

Freya appeared in the doorway, head tilted curiously at the assembly of fellow animals and rampant chaos in the master bedroom, a place that was mostly forbidden to them due to some accidents that had resulted in a change of carpet. She fluttered up onto the bed, peering curiously at the list before her owner and then at the crystal.

"See anything you like, Frey?" Ourania asked hopefully, knowing full-well that the dustling could easily understand her.

The dustling pointed one well-filed claw at a name, making Ourania peer forward to see it. "Fiore?" she asked.

Freya nodded, seating herself regally on the bed and fluffing out her wings.

"That's nice." Na'ir agreed, smoothing down the pink dustling's feathers. "It reminds me of... bright colors."

Ourania looked at the crystal, mouth pursed slightly. "Fiore." she whispered, voice husky with feeling.

The crystal flashed, blinding everyone for one amazing second with a series of rainbow colored lights. The electricity in the house went out at the exact moment, and a stray lightningbolt outside flashed, the rolling thunder echoing to rumble the house but a second later. Ourania blinked, trying to remove the swatches of delayed color from flickering across her retina while convincing her ear drums it was okay to function once more. She looked around at the now mostly quiet family, smiling slightly. "Fiore it is then."

The woman of the house was acutely aware of the fact that she had neglected to return to the Temple for a session of learning more about not only her Elysian but also all that her job as its summoner entailed. Sometimes she felt as though the sky was cracking in fine lines over her head, waiting for the opportune moment to fall down around her and snap her out of this daydream.

She was staring at the crystal now, watching the carousel of colors flicker and mix until her eyes began to burn. Na'ir was old enough now to fix his own dinner and attend to the pets while she was out, but it still made her nervous to leave her family alone with nary a way to reach her. The Temple was near Barton, a few miles away so not within easy running distance. However, she did need to interact with her fellow novices and learn well whatever lessons the master summoners had to teach her.

She sighed, eyes averting to where the Kederi boy sat, tending to Aristarkhos by feeding him bits of meat softened with milk. His wing span was awkwardly situated about the chair while the fire dragon rolled in his lap. His pale blue eyes caught her own red ones, and he gave a small, slightly embarrassed smile which she returned.

She caught the squirming dragon babe, hoping that her stern look was more sturdy than it felt upon her face. "Stop giving Na'ir a bad time, or no one will feed you while I'm away." she scolded, holding the pint-sized dragon eye-level. "Now be a good boy, eat your breakfast, and I'll be back soon, okay?"

The dragon snorted, spirals of smoke appearing from each puckered nostril, but his clawing at her sensitive wrists ceased as he went limp with defeat.

"Thank you." Na'ir said gratefully, accepting the scaly child from her grip. "He was leaving marks with all that moving..."

"So I noticed..." Ourania replied, looking at the welts across his bared legs where the dragon had, accidently or not, buried his claws or scraped his armored hide against flesh. "I have some ointment in the cabinet, wait here for a moment..."

She went to the bathroom, pausing to lean against the basin and look at her face in the mirror. Was she forcing her family to take on too much at once? She was already away for work, could she be away for summoning as well? The pale woman bit her lip, feeling pressure building in her throat and behind her eyes. She wanted this to work out so badly, she wanted to prove herself able, but she didn't want to do so at the cost of her family.

She took a moment to breathe before shifting through the medicine cabinet to find the prescribed ointment. If it continued to be this terrible, the only thing she could do was speak to one of the master summoners about finding another, more worthy individual to bring the female Elysian back. The thought caused an almost physical pain in her breast, but she was walking out of the bathroom limits now and could not afford to appear weak in front of Na'ir.

The Kederi looked up when he heard her footsteps across the floor, his expression questioning.

"Couldn't find it for a moment." she croaked out, frowning and clearing her throat. "Here it is though, I'll put it on."

She unscrewed the cap, taking a small sniff of the pasty concoction before spreading it on her fingertips and running it across the red scratches on Na'ir's legs.

Ourania stopped when he chuckled, a sound coated in melted sugar, and looked up in surprise. "What?" she questioned.

"I'm not a child anymore, Lady. I can put bandaids on my own scrapes; furthermore, I can sense when you're lying to me." his voice had always been low, even as a child, soothing even when he was accusing.

She frowned, concentrating on applying the cream to his legs. "Lying? About what?"

"You're upset." he said simply, allowing her to look away. "You think we'll fall apart or worse without you around."

She sighed, rising so that she could look down at him. "That obvious, hm?"

"There's hurt in your expression, in your movements, I've been with you long enough to pluck the emotions from the veil you throw over them."

He always spoke as such, even when the subject was personal. Ourania supposed it would unnerve most people, but it just made her smile faintly, and feel the returning pressure of tears against her eyes. "Do you think I'm unfair? That I should be more trusting? Your race grows out of adolescence at an alarming rate, Na'ir, but that doesn't mean that you weren't just recently a child..."

"Then it is me you don't trust, Lady?" he questioned, stroking the crimson scales of a quieted Aristarkhos.

"Of course I trust you!" she snapped around a sob. "I just... I don't know..."

"You're scared." he replied softly, gathering the dragon in his arms and placing him in the small bed they had constructed for him. "You don't think you can handle so much at once. You don't think I can, either."

Ourania looked down as he continued speaking to her, wondering when they had managed to switch places and he had become the adult in the relationship.

"You are a good summoner, Ourania, you just need a chance to prove it. You are also a good provider, and a good mother-figure to run to for comfort. Don't doubt yourself, and please, do not doubt me either. I can keep things from dissolving while you're gone."

She glanced at him, shock on her features.

"Did I speak in error?" he questioned, brow furrowed as he ran back through what he had said.

"You called me by my name. Not 'lady' or any other title, but Ourania."

His face relaxed and a small smile tugged at his lips. "Yes, I know you had always preferred mother, but it felt awkward to say considering... you were always the person to go to when things went awry, but I had..."

He couldn't find the words, so she put a hand over his mouth to make the straining cease. "It's alright, Na'ir. I knew you never really considered me your mother... it occured to me when you were but a boy. And I do trust you... I truly do, it'll just... be so hard to leave you all, even if it's only for a while."

He removed her hand, cupping it in his own. "Understood, Ourania. But know that I will do all that is in my ability to keep things in order here while you are gone. And go you must, otherwise Fiore would be very disappointed to find her summoner so entangled in the motherly aspects that she couldn't bloom to her full potential."

"You should be a poet, Na'ir." Ourania said, smiling slightly. "Thank you... I do feel better about it; I should have spoken to you earlier."

"Yes." he released her hand with another one of his slow grins. "You should have."

Ourania cleaned her face and changed her clothing, picking up Fiore and calling for an assembly at the door.

"While I'm gone, Na'ir's in charge. If Na'ir is absent for any reason, you will go down the ranks to second in command Freya, and, failing that, to Edward. Hopefully all three will remain at their posts so that it won't fall to Amaranthis..."

The candy-colored .exe snorted, extending her tongue to show how distasteful she found the fourth rank.

"I'll be home soon, probably around dinnertime; hopefully you'll all be able to scrounge up lunch for yourself." The novice summoner paused uncertainly before continuing. "I promise that these lessons won't last long. And I'll take some time off work so that you guys will see just as much of me. I just... hope that you won't be angry."

There was a silence, dominated by heavy consideration that made the fine hairs on the back of her neck stand at attention.

It was Amaranthis who spoke first. "Why on Gaia would we be angry? No bitching or crappy cooking? I say good."

Outwardly, it was a rather rude comment, but Ourania could sense the compliment hidden underneath, and smiled when everyone else nodded in solemn agreement.

"Fine then, Na'ir will be cooking for you from now on, and I know how much you all love his cooking."

She left to a chorus of groans and an agitated "It's not that bad!", laughing under her breath and giving an adoring stare to her crystal.

"I really hope this works." she murmured to the Elysian, feeling lighter at heart when it winked in agreement.

Quote:
Ourania entered the outskirts of Durem just before it was officially afternoon, crystal hidden inside a knapsack at her side in case she happened upon any thieves on the way through town. The novice summoner wasn't certain that Elysians could, in fact be stolen, but she would take no chances.

She stopped to examine the buildings for a moment, always amazed to see the towering monstrosities reaching ever upward as though grasping for the heavens themselves. Ourania could recall trying to peer at the tops as a child, leaning back so far that she lost her equilibrium and fell to the ground. She shook her head, grinning in rememberance, when a scent reached her nose and made her mouth water.

She found the little cafe after following the smell of bread and pastries for a few blocks, backtracking when the wind tricked her and carried the aroma down a different path. It was a surprisingly small building, made of old red-brick and wedged between two skyscrapers that made it even more insignificant by comparison. It had a handpainted sign that was chipping slightly at one side where water-damage had been done, but it still clearly read Shade's Cafe in old swirled letters. She tilted her head curiously, frowning thoughtfully at the odd title while wondering if that was the original owner's name.

She looked into the open glass windows, sighting instantly the assortment of baked goods and pleasant old-world ambiance the interior supplied. The floors were all wood, much like her home, and there were small tables set up with vases of hybrid flowers. The counter had a display of muffins, breads, and danishes that looked as enticing as they smelled, and before the summoner knew it she was in the cafe, peeking into the glass case to see what it was she wanted to feast upon.

Ourania ordered herself a strawberry danish along with a cup of sparkling water to wash it down. She sat outside in the vintage tables as she ate, admiring the artistry of the architecture and muttering the miniscule facts she knew about the city to Fiore.

"That building over there was actually built in tribute to the first summoner, one whose name was lost throughout the centuries. It was actually a temple before it was industrialized... I think its a bank now..."

She felt a sense of sadness from her crystal, potent enough to make her lose interest in the last few bites of her exquisite danish. "People forget, I think, they forget and move on without learning anything. The summoners were important because they could bring about the advent of your kind, but as you vanished from this plane, so did they."

As the words left a numb sensation on her lips, the summoner was left to contemplate her silent companion's feelings. She watched the bubbles in her water catch the smog-filtered sunlight and wondered when Fiore would have a form more suited to interaction.

The novice rose, depositing a tip on the table for the waitress to collect before continuing on her way through the city.

Quote:
It was a long, winding path from Durem to Barton Town and Ourania's feet were beginning to feel it. She stopped once to sit on the side of the dirt trail and rub her aching soles, muttering to herself all the while. "They need some sort of public transportation to town." she informed her Elysian as she stood, slipping the sandals back on and continuing on her way.

The smell of Durem, primarily exhaust and a debatably clean populace, was fading in the distance and the sun was at its highest point in the sky, making her shadow shrink down until it sought refuge directly under her feet. She wiped her brow with her spare hand, eyes narrowing to see if Barton had come into view yet. She saw the smallest tendril of smoke, possibly from a home, and sighed deeply; she shouldn't have dallied in Durem for so long, now she was behind schedule and Na'ir was still alone with a household of hungry pets.

She walked on, ignoring the burning of blisters forming while cursing her choice of shoes. She focused on objects on the trail, waiting until she was astride them before picking another small thing to help propel herself forward. Before long she sensed eyes on her, and looked up to see a small girl watching her from the outskirts of a town. It took a moment for her to register the fact that she had finally made it.
