What music inspires you? Whether it be particular musicians, genres, or songs, we could all benefit from this sort of swap.
I've found that I can't listen to orchestral music while I'm trying to get work done. I play the violin and love it to pieces, so if I hear a song I could play... my fingers itch for my bow and strings rather than the keyboard. sweatdrop
While I'm writing, I like to listen to peaceful and soothing music. I also tend to listen to some bittersweet tunes, since almost everything I write has a bit of a bittersweet or ironic edge to it.
Here are some of my favorite things to listen to while I write:
Details - Frou Frou Actually, I used the song "Flicks" as inspiration for the nanowrimo novel I started last year! I might use the song again... Coldplay More peaceful, bittersweet music. I've loved them for many years now. Hopes and Fears - Keane Give Up - The Postal Service There is no saying no to The Postal Service. *_* Nightsongs - Stars I like all of their music, But Nightsongs is my favorite album of theirs. Wolf's Rain OSTs - Yoko Kanno Though I doubt many on this site are hard-core anime haters, whether or not you appreciate animation shouldn't stop you from listening to this great and beautiful soundtrack. Speak For Yourself - Imogen Heap Same vocalist as Frou Frou, but with a more synthesized, upbeat sound. Silent Hill OSTs - Akira Yamaoka These have such beautiful, touching, tragic, and creepy songs. I don't particularly recommend the first soundtrack, but I strongly recommend the second and third soundtracks. Katamari Damacy OST Some of these songs are just gold. Exodus - Utada Hikaru A lot of people hate this album. I am not one of them. It has a great sound and mood to it.
And some songs in particular: Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World Tru & Set Yourself On Fire - Stars Where The Streets Have No Name - U2
Obviously I have a lot more music I like than this (I dig rock and orchestral things and dance music as much as the next... uhh, music lover). But these are great for writing, I've found. A grey, rainy day also helps bunches. 3nodding

Surprisingly, Techno music is the most inspiriting for me, so recently I’ve been downloading new stuff and trying not to listen to it until November.
I think the main reason is because the simple and highly catchy beats are very addictive and make it so I don’t want to leave the computer, so I just stay up and write at night. Also because since most of my techno songs don’t have too many words it makes it easy to just push it to the back of my head and use it as background noise xd

Aahh, when DON'T I listen to music? ~
I cannot write to English lyrics unless it's a song I've heard so many times that my comprehension of it has transcended the spoken...err, sung word. I prefer movie soundtracks with a definite mood, preferably noble or battle-inspiring. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ranks high on my "music to inspire writing" list, as does The Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack and Final Fantasy 20020220, a live recording of a concert consisting of music from Final Fantasies I-X. Everything else -Mozart, Beethoven, other Final Fantasy soundtracks, other games, etc all work for me. Perhaps the only English music that I can write to is Kamelot and Metallica.
Songs:
-The Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack- The Battle Only the Beginning of an Adventure Evacuating London ...The whole damn soundtrack up to the last four tracks.
Hymn to the Fallen - Saving Private Ryan soundtrack(I think) (HOLY s**t!)

I love to listen to Emo, Acoustic, or Rock. It usually depends on what part of a story I'm on...if it's more GRRR I'LL BITE YOUR HEAD OFF/I"M SAD TO THE POINT OF KILLING (sorry hehe caps) I'll listen to more Emoish Metal bands. For a more so softer normal mood I listen to Acoustic or Rock. Though some Acoustic and rock could be used for the sadder moments.
Some great awesome bands are: -A Perfect Cricle -The Academy Is... -All Time Low -And Then I Turned Seven (great for sadder parts) -Black Flag -Blink 182 (just cuz') -Boys Night Out -Brand New -Breaking Benjamin -Chiodos -Coheed and Cambria -Death Cab for Cutie (I prefer their older works, but they still rock) -Disturbed -Dragon Force -Eighteen Visions -The Fall of Troy Lalala so many more cept' I put up a lot. hehe.

* What I absolutly can't listen is songs with some kind of text in it, like some songs of Moulin Rouge or Meat Loaf, O_o;; then i HAVE too listen too the text and then I am not focused on my story
anyway, I mostly just listen rock for it
Also techno and R&B don't work, cause then my story gets a bit negative xD I know really weird but it happens (no offense too techno and R&B listeners)

They Might Be Giants is highly inspirational, but a lot of classical helps me write . . . or anything in Japanese, since I can't understand most of it, it's easy to just push it to the back of my thoughts.

And here I thought I was the only one who finds lyrics distracting when I'm writing. rofl
I like classical or non-english lyrics when I'm writing, but sometimes I'll just listen to whatever hits my mood at that given moment. Since I like everything from Enya to Eminem, there's a lot of ground to cover.

I can listen to any song, though if I'm having trouble writing, I notice the songs I don't like. I play CDs that I like all or most of the songs on. I've played Sarina Paris three times in a row, because it's easier than switching. If I'm alone, it's no problem- I don't listen to the music. If Dad or Mom is around, they expect the CD to end eventually.
Let's see, I have, in and around my CD player:
Enya- A Day Without Rain ATC- Around the World (I think. That's the song I bought it for.) Sarina Paris- Self titled, I think. Hate the last song, ('I love you', sung over and over, for about six minutes), but I like all of the rest. Celtic Myths and Legends; which supposedly has songs from LotR. Pure Moods I and II. Jimmy Buffet All American Rejects

Lyrics are too distracting for me as well, so I listen to movie soundtracks and classical music. 'Musical Evenings with the Captain' and the soundtrack to Peter Pan were two CD's that got played a lot last year.

Anything that blends into the background. Like jazz or ambient electornica. It kinda let's me see my story in a movie form.

Let's see...I tend to listen to LOTR music sometimes when I write, when nothing else seems to fit. I also listen to "German Techno" from Super Troopers if there's an entertaining fight scene I need to work on. Everything else, though, is rock or metal. No sappy songs for me! lol
