raven sniffed the ground delicately to see if she could catch the scent of any unlucky prey. It had been a little over 36 hours since she had caught anythig bigger than a small rabbit and she was getting a little anxious to get more meat than what the rabbits had been providing her. Her thin, ragged fur indicated that she had been in the desert her entire life. Lifting her muzzle up in the air, she sniffed it delicately in case another wolf decided to sneak up on her. A few moments later, she shook her head and started to slowly walk towards a shady tree.

Hiei flicked the dust off his long tail and lifted his crimson eyes to the distance. He too was starting to loose the luster his fur once and was more lean. Seeing the female he thought of ignoring her but then realized that with another wolf he could catch better prey. Hn, like he'd ask for help. With a snort the oddly colored wolf pretended not to notice her and moved for the shade.

Raven flicked her tail slightly as she caught the faint scent of another wolf. She didn't bother looking behind her to see who it was. She knew most of the wolves here and was very confident in Tsume's ability to chase out any wolves that didn't belong to his pack. Finally reaching the shade, she leaned against the thin trunk of the tree and half-closed her eyes, happy that she was able to find some shade from the hot sun above her. The weather wasn't as bad as it was during the summer months, but it was still hot enough for her to find shade during the mid-day hours.

The dark wolf padded into the shade, his eyes seeming to glow. He gave the female a side long glance before dropping onto the ground and looking around. "Darkness will come shortly." He muttered absently.

She glanced at the other wolf who padded under the shade and narrowed her eyes slightly before pricking her ears up slightly. "There is always darkness," she said in a low voice. Turning her gaze away from Hiei, she gazed in the direction of the Alpha's cave, hoping he was gone with his two sons and mate to go hunting near the edge of the packlands.

He gave a deep chuckle and bobbed his head. "Yes. Always darkness." His tone was low and cynical. He understood. The black bodied wolf crawled closer to the female. "What is your name?"

Raven flicked her tail slightly as she heard him moving closer to her, but she stood her ground. Pinning her ears back against her skull, she lowered her head down slightly and closed her eyes slightly. "Raven. And yours?" she asked him, a hint of curiousity in her voice.

"Hiei." He replied in his cold, bored tone. He shook the desert dust off his maw then looked thoughtful. Hiei scanned Raven over, examining her. She was thin but he could tell she has strength in that form. Perhaps she was a good choice after all. "I am one of the new hunters" He added hoping to catch the female's attention.

She nodded her head, a little curious of why his mother had named the male wolf 'Hiei.' Despite her curiousity, she kept her attention away from him and on the mountain ahead of them. She was the adopted daughter of the Alpha and she wanted to make him not worry about her all the time. He had enough problems with his two sons without having to worry about her, too. Flicking an ear, she heard his comment about being the newest hunter and she nodded her head. "That's good. We need more hunters. Despite us not having anymore pups, since they have grown up, we still need the help of finding food in this desert." She turned her attention away from the mountain and towards Hiei to find him staring at her. Raising an eyebrow, she turned her body slightly and sat down on her haunches. "But that could change," she told him in a husky voice.

Hiei felt his fur raise at the last comment. Was that an offer? He kept his face expressionless but his tail betrayed him with quick flickers of movement. "Hn, children? They get in the way. Now if you're interested in a hunt with me..." He purposely trailed off before getting to his feet. His crimson eyes burning with interest in the female.

Raven canted her head slightly and stared at him curiously. Was he really serious about children getting in the way? With the many female wolves around, they could watch over the pups while the parents were on hunting duty or watch duty. Hearing his question about hunting, she was about to decline when she felt her stomach protest. Sighing, she knew she needed to eat something today or else go to sleep hungry. "I would love to hunt with you. Maybe we can find something other than rabbits and ground squirrels," she told him, her eyes scanning the desert for anything other than the two small prey she had mentioned.

The male stretched and gave a sharp nod of his head. "Yes... I am tired of those weak prey...." He arched his back letting it crack and the fur slowly in a wave go back down across his spine. With a quick paw forward he took off to where he'd last scouted and seen larger prey. A good way to impress the female he was sure. If she wanted a good hunt then he was willing to give it to her. He treked over a large hill a good ways from where they started and stared down.
There. A herd of deer just ready for the pickings. He glanced back at her with prideful eyes hoping to impress the female.

Raven waited a few seconds before slowly following him. She had no idea where he was going, but it involved hunting for something. Flicking an ear, she followed him up the hill slowly, extending her long legs carefully to not overwork herself. As she walked up to Hiei's side, she noticed the small herd of deer and her eyes widened. "How and when did you spot this?" she asked him curiously. There was enough meat to feed the entire pack for several days if they killed off all of the deer in the herd.

He held his muzzle up a bit higher practically beaming. "Hn, I found it while scouting. I was resting when I saw you on the way to tell the pack leader." He stared at the herd to decide who was weakest. "Do you like it?" He questioned with a slight cough.

Raven nodded her head and gazed back towards the mountain where the pack lived. She saw no signs of the Alpha male, so her initial thought was that he was probably either scouting the edge of his packlands or off somewhere with one of his sons. Flicking an ear, she turned her attention back to the herd of deer and she nodded her head again. "This is good news for the pack. Maybe there are other deer herds like this one near the back of the packlands."
