why is cloud the main character and not zack if zack was the one visiting tifa and cloud was the guy in bad guys clothing

Uhhh....what? Zacks dead. Hes very dead. He didnt even know Tifa except that she was the tour guide. Hes just a naturally friendly person.

what i mean is why in the game do you meet zack if he is dead and if that is true then why does cloud and aeris talk to him

Um, I'll try to answer any questions...
First off, not 'bad guy's clothing'. That was the uniform all Shinra, low-level grunts wear. Zack was a member of Shinra's fighting unit, SOLDIER. They weren't always bad, and Cloud didn't always hate them.
Okay, now. Zack dies several years (I think) before the events in the game take place. He, at one time, dated Aeris. That's why they knew each other. In fact, he was her first love. Zack and Cloud became friends under unknown circumstances. They didn't grow up together; Cloud was from Nibelheim and Zack was from Gongaga. Whatever the case, that's how Cloud knew him. Besides being dead, Zack couldn't be the main character because he doesn't have enough of a fight. Cloud was the, well, loser of this whole mess; other than dying, Zack did exactly what he'd wanted with his life (he was one of the best SOLDIER members). Zack didn't really have anything to fight against. He wouldn't have made a good tragic hero. His story just isn't depressing enough to be FF main character material. Plus, his parents are alive. The whole story is that there's nothing but Tifa's memories to prove that Cloud wasn't merely created in some lab, because both his parents are dead. Zack couldn't fill that place, because you even meet his parents in the game.

Zack is only involved in the story to the point of filling a void in Cloud's, well, clouded memory. In fact, it was Zack's memories that Cloud uses to replace his own before recovering his memories in the lifestream with Tifa's help.

Poor Zack. At least he got some screen time in FF XII: AC. How did he die anyway? Just got hit by something on a random mission or something?

After the Nibleim incident where Sephiroth burned it to the ground, Zack helped cloud escape from a green chamber thingy in the mansion. After they get 2 the outskirts of midgar, they were jumped by shinra grunts. They assumed cloud was already dead, when Zack tried to fight them off they pumped him full of lead. He went down like a warrior. (hidden cutscene in shinra mansion basement after ultima weapon atteacks Midee )

from the events of last order and the cs' in the game i will shorten it
last order sephy = bad yarrr hurts clould and zack lots cloud is a reg soldier didn't make it to 1st class but fought with sephiroth and sephiroth runs away (for a reason unknown to me) hojo takes them to the masion basement and uses cloud as a "sample" for jenova zack and cloud escape to the outskirts of midgar where zack is killed by shinra solders and cloud is left for dead he makes his way into sector 7 with zacks sword where tifa finds him at the station where she takes him to her bar and introduces him to barret where he then goes on to blow up reactors (start of FF7) he forgets his past but remembers it later~

Nibleim incident => sephy runs clould zack taken to basment clould gets +4 in mako (w00t)
in a few years = zack and clould run away! zack dies sad clould left for dead and finds tifa
