In alot of books I read I have noticed that the author will just kill off some of the main characters and it really irks me. Do you have the same feelings or are you ok with the loss?

I don't mind. Well most of the time, I guess i should say. It's a pretty good plot device to get your readers all riled up. Someitmes I feel like it's a cop out on the part of the author, sometimes it feels like there really wasn't any other choice. As if it were just something that HAD to happen, the story demanded it.

I guess I should just say that it really depends on the story amd my own personal attachement to the character. If I love them to death and they die off, leaving me only with characters I am ambivilant towards, I may get upset. If it's a character I'm not terribly close to I don't blink.

There is a book I love in which my favorite character dies, but for some reason I never mind it. No matter how many times, or in what mood I read the book. He dies, and it just seems right. It was the appropriate point in the story, it was logical. It just makes sense that he takes his leave at the point. His time came.

In the end, I think that death in books mirrors death in life. Some go when we're not ready for them to leave, others seem to leave right on time.

Of course it sucks when a beloved character dies, but if everyone was always alive and happy at the end of every book things would get pretty boring. It would end up like Hollywood.

When I am emotionally invested I truely resent it, even if I recognize the need.

Sometimes I worry about nameless or named characters with small bits just getting killed off in the name of authorship. Sometimes I imagine them existing somewhere and getting take out all of a sudden all on the whim of an author.

Really, I just raise an eyebrow.

When I watch or read a main character die (In movies or books) I am not really affected like in the Matrix Revolutions with the death of Neo and Trinity, Scarecrow with Gant and Harry Potter: tOotP with Sirius.

Really, it's a love-hate sorta thing. It makes me wanna murder the author, but it also makes the book more interesting, since in almost all stories the main character lives, and odd people like me and my sister are rooting for the bad guys. So, it's pretty interesting when one of our favorite main characters die, although we may cry pout and get very violent with the books...it still has its attractive points.

I have nothing against main characters being killed off--except when it just isn't right for the story. Sometimes, authors seem to just kill characters off for impact, which I don't see as being particularly efficient or useful unless it manages to benefit the storyline in some way.

Or another thing that I see a lot is someone making a character, a minor character, using them in a scene and then just killing them simply so that the author doesn't have to continue writing about the character. It's no longer useful, so it dies. Often, when I see that, I just think--well, why not just not include the character in the first place?

Ugh I just can't stand it I mean why have a main character if your just going to kill him/her. There supposed to be the main one so don't kill them. Its just annoying

Oooh, and I'd like to add, to my former comment--

If the killing of the main character allows the reader to discover further aspects of the plot/concept, it can, for immediate lack of a better phrase, be spiffy. Although this can be rather hard to pull off in a non-cliche manner.

I usually don't think of it as really the author's fault... if a story is good, I see the characters as people going about their lives, and their death is an inevitable part of that. So I guess I don't really get mad at the author... because it's not their fault. Which is silly, because of course it is their fault. sweatdrop

if the death is done tactfully, I think it's good, and I miss the character, but a lot of the time, it seems like the char. was killed simply to be dramatic, or to have an effect on the reader. That seems shallow...and I don't like it.

Tragedies usually end with main character deaths (at least emotional/spiritual deaths). Shakespeare and Victor Hugo leave nearly all worth-while characters 'dead on the floor.' And by the time the protagonist's death comes, you're almost expecting it.
But when the author just springs it on you in the end, it's not cool.

I don't mind it when a main character dies. There are too many happily ever afters out there for me.

If I'm fond of the character, I pause, shed a couple of tears, and move on. If I'm not, I laugh my a** off.

Ahh, killing off the main character... If the guy is a jerk, I laugh at it, especially if he dies in some spontaneous way. if the character is a really good one, then it's crappy, but just a book.

I am gonna write a book one of these days where everyone dies in the end, and a major character spontaneously combusts at a critical moment whee
