What are your thoughts on the Tony's tonight? What screw ups took place (in voting and in dress styles), and who got what they really deserved?

Personally, I think the main upset (which was truly upsetting) was Spamalot beating Piazza out in Best Musical. Man, that hurt.

I wasn't really to shocked that Spamalot won, I was shocked that Light in the Piazza won all the technical awards! I really had my money on Spamalot for all those.

I was really suprised that Alan Alda didn't win... I think everyone was.

Overall, I was very disappoint by the quality of the entire show compared to last years show. The sound was horrible, the performances were not that impressive.

But I definetly had a WTF moment when I realized that Jerry was not included in the theatre memebers that died in the last year. He DID die this season... am I correct? Cus I could have SWORN it was right after New Years.

They did mention Jerry, but it was a poor transition... Some technical crap happened and his name didn't appear on the bottom of the screen, but if you looked behind Jesse at the beginning of his song, you could see Jerry's face on the monitor. sad

Now, I had actually never heard anything about Piazza before now, and wow, I really want to see more!

My thoughts on the Tony Awards. Wow!

Sara Ramirez pulled the front of her gown up how many times? Four or five, at least. That was just wrong.

and how about that salute to Stephen Sondheim on his 75th birthday? Somewhere from West Side Story. Like there aren't any good duets in any of the shows that he wrote the lyrics AND music for.

I was happy that Glengarry Glen Ross won though I had wanted 12 Angry Men to win. Jeffrey Richards, the producer, is a friend of a friend and I've met him several times. Especially while in college when he was the PR guy for a lot of shows I saw while I reviewed them for the school paper.

I will say that because of what I saw at the Tony's, I have no interest in seeing Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or the Spelling Bee. Spamalot looks interesting and Piazza didn't show itself too much, but the song they did was good.

Piazza didn't pick the best song to perform, but from everything I've heard/seen, it's worth as much notice as you can give it. I would suggest seeing Scoundrels and Spelling Bee even if the songs didn't pique your interest, Sernin, if only to have a stronger opinion on it. There are multiple ways to get rather cheap seats if you don't want to spend too much money on a show you're not too sure about. Spamalot is interesting, and it's Monty Python, but personally I don't think quality-wise that it's comparable to Piazza or DRS. I can't say much for Spelling Bee because I don't know too much about the show besides the main plot.

I know! I think she was nervous though...cause when she got up there she sort of acted like she didn't have anything planned to say. I'm glad she won though, after seeing her perform...

Overall I thought the dresses were horrible. Anne Hathaway should burn that thing she calls a gown! eek

I'm mad at DRS now because, due to the song they chose (as good as it was), my mom is now forbidding me to see the show ;_; And I definitely wanted to see it before getting the OCR! *sigh* And is Norbert Leo Butz really that ugly? I was under the impression that he was quite good-looking, but in his DRS get up......

I'm interested in seeing Spelling Bee now, but I don't know if I could convince anyone else to go see it with me, and I'm not going to NY alone.

I agree about the dress Sara Rameriaz (sp?) was wearing. I think she hitched it up about 5 times.

And how in the heck did Christina Applegate get the lead with a voice like that!?!

He actually was included. He was the last person they showed. They just cut before him, but you were still able to see a glimpse of him on the screen from far away. He was shown, though.

What's been pissing me off lately is the time wasted by the host. I remember during the tonys when they would do a little scene from all the dramas. Ever since Hugh (We're on first name basis...not really) started hosting all that time is taken up with him singing. He must have sang three times last night. Long songs, too. Also the Somewhere duet to celebrate Sondheim's birthday must have made Sondheim change the station. It was god awful.

Are you serious? After watching the performance for the Spelling Bee I wanted to see it so bad. The characters are awesome.

I was surprised that after I watched the performance of Spamalot I didn't really want to see it anymore. It's not that it was bad, it's just that it was a let down. I've just heard so much great stuff. Maybe it was an off night.

My favorite fact was that three, count'em, THREE of the people that won a tony last night were a product of Second City. I was so happy.

What I thought was odd was the performance for it. I know Fosse is dead, but come on, doing Big Spender for the first part? One of Fosse's signature pieces? The number compared to what Fosse did with it was at the point of community theatre. The other numbers had things stolen from Bob Fosse. It just really bothered me.

Ugh, that Sondheim tribute! It would have been bad enough on its own, but the fact that that stupid commercial using the same song horribly mangled played EVERY FREEKING COMMERCIAL BREAK make the song even worse! -_- It made me want to give them (the commercial people) negative support (i.e. take money from them instead of give it to them).

Actually, my biggest disappointment was Christina Applegate's singing (not that I excpected her to have a good voice or anything).

The rest *despite the sound* I thought was pretty good. (I wanna see Putnam County now)

For me, seeing what I saw of Spelling Bee and DRS, it made me really want to see them. (not that that will happen any time soon, being where I am and without any money to speak of)

And as far as the Sondheim tribute is concerned, I honestly expected more from it. Hugh didn't seem to put much emotion into it, and the diva looked and sounded like she had no clue what she was doing. And Hugh's dancing song at the beginning just seemed to me to be way too random and unnecessary.
