OK, here it goes. some books say that there thesame thing but others say there really different. I am starting to get confused cause i am tryhing to study to be one(just don't know what one i'm going to be). Please help. It is very confusing to be reading a book that has to do with wicca, and it say's that there one in the same and witch is just a nickname, But then theres the books that say its toataly different. All i know is that i'm starting to get confused. I beliefe in karma and the three fold law, and i believe in the "Do what thou will, an it harm none". Like i said I am confused.

Yeah, as he said. Wicca is a religion. It INVOLVES witchcraft, but again, witchcraft is just practicing magic.

What books have you been reading? (not in a sarcastic way). Some Wiccans call themselves witches, but not all witches are wiccans. Kind of like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

I hope I didn't confuse you with that. What the others said is right, as far as I know. Wicca and Witchcraft are not one in the same, though many Wiccans practice Witchcraft, by doing spells, etc.

Alrighty... Wicca = Religion. It is a pagan religion, earth based and all. Wicca is not more than fifty years old. Witchcraft = System. It's not a religion, it's just a system, just practising magick. You can be a witch without being wiccan, and a wiccan without being a witch. You can be a Wiccan Witch however... Or a pagan witch and what not. Hoped that helped! 3nodding

Hmm.. I would say that in the religion of Wicca, you can practice witchcraft... but you don't have to be Wiccan TO practice witchcraft.
That's how i view it! 3nodding

Through my research i have found the following difference:
Wiccans follow the wiccan rule.
Witches follow no rules and have no regard for the rule against self-gain and the wiccan rule.

wicca also involves magick

but witchcraft involves using spells without the wiccan rule. (there are many books in which i found this information. and on an offical wiccan website as well...anyway....yea...go look for this information. its all true. and to the person in charge, try doing some more research. (only a suggestion))

...Yes. We get it. Thanks captain obvious? Sorry if I am coming off as rude, but your last statement was rather precocious and unnecessary. Whichever "person in charge you are referring to," I think we understand it just fine.

Don't double post. Edit your previous post.

A magic user need not be a witch at all, either, if you want to get specific, kiddo. Some people who like to use magic without a religion can call themselves many things. Anything from witch to ceremonial magician to wizard... a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet, remember.

Well, I didn't really understand the first post much, to be honest. o_O; But from what I got out of it, you want to know the difference between Wicca and being a witch? Or were you asking basically about magick? (Yeah, I'm pretty slow) I'm assuming by witch, you mean a person who practices magick. Sorry... am just trying to get this all straight. >< So...I went to my bookshelf and dragged out Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. Hopefully what I post will help you out? ._.

On magic:

"It's common knowledge even among the masses that Witches practice magic. they may have misguided ideas concerning the type of magic perdormed, but the Witch is firmly linked in popular thought with the magical arts.
Wicca is, as we have seen, a religion that embraes magic as one of its basic concepts. This isn't unusual. In fact, it's often difficult to discern where religion ends and magic begins in any faith.
Still, magic plays a special role in Wicca. It allows us to improve our lives and return energy to our ravaged planet. Wiccans also develop special relationships with the Goddess and God through magic. This doesn't mean that every spell is a prayer, nor are invocations differently worded spells. Through working with the powers which the God and Goddess embody, we grow close to them. Calling upon their names and visualizing their presense during spells and rites creates a bond between Deity and human. Thus, in Wicca, magic is a religious practice.
I've defined magic a number of times in my books. Surprisingly, this is a difficult task. My latest, most refined definition is:
Magic is the projection of natural energies to produce needed effects.

Something to the extent of Wicca vs. Witch (language):

"Much disagreement concerning the exact (and original) meaning of the word "Wicca" presently exists. ...
... Therefore Wicca could be used to describe the religion itself (a loosely organized Pagan religion centering toward reverence for the creative forces of nature, usually symbolized by a goddess and god), as well as Practitioners of both sexes. The term "Warlock," though sometimes used to describe male practitioners, is virtually never used by Wiccans themselves. Though some use Wicca and Witch almost interchangeably, I prefer the older, less-encumbered word Wicca, and so use it almost exclusively."

Again, this was taken from Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. Hopefully this did not confuse you more. xD
