I was just wondering... why do some people believe Halloween is evil? I can understand the reasons for thinking it has to do with devil-worship when it comes to dressing up like devils or witches and stuff like that, but I know it's NOT evil. I'm totally okay with dressing up as those things (I do it myself a lot). Just... why??

I gave this as a reason in another thread:

People think it has to do with the devil or something I think. But its my favoret holliday and im christian. biggrin xd
it has nothing to do with the devil 3nodding its the time of year when the viel is its weakest and the spirits run amuk, I find it Ironic that I said it has nothing to do with the devil when I am being the devil this year xd

Right.

I too am Christian and yes Halloween is my favorite holiday.
You're right about the spirits thing. To quote from the movie
Hocus Pocus:

Quote:
"It's the one night of the year when the spirits of the dead can return to earth."

Honestly, that's not evil. If anything, it sounds kinda happy when phrased that way.
The thing is, if you look at mythology and other religions, death is associated with the Underworld, and that is sometimes associated with Hell. Which, of course, is ruled by The Devil. So there you are. 3nodding

... but I want some other ideas and explanations. Also, are there any websites that covers this topic?
I'm asking, 'cause it's something I'd like to read up on. I don't know how to do a search for this kind of thing without getting websites that are convinced that Halloween is evil. I just want websites about why they think so and the real truth about it and all that stuff.
Can you guys help me?

well, ill give the whole reason to why people think it is associated with evil.

its called catholics, the holiday was originally a pagan holiday but when the crusades happened catholics changed it to suit their religion, with that since you are supposed to dress up to make it so that the spirits are more comfortable they changed that so that it was to blend in with all the spirits so that they would not kill you, and also the main god for this holiday was Pan, whom was the greek god of nature, whom was a styr, thats where the whole idea of the devil came from, they had created the devil in his image so that people would not worship him.

sorry if I offended you in anyway, but it is the truth 3nodding

Personally I think that people have learned that if you put fear in people that tehy will abolish whatever it is. I thik that the Religious people dont like it because it doesn't show your "true self" and didnt like it so they called it evil...Almost like The Water Boy and his momma. "Benjamin Franklin is the Devil"...yea dont think i spelled it rite but o well. Basically Same Concept...If i offended ne one by this im sorry it just a personal belief

They're simply misguided. It is our purpose to guide them on the right the path.

Yeah, I know they're misguided. But I'm just wondering where their ideas came from.
Those are some good suggestions, by the way.

i am sorry i do not see where you say that most of it was for evil ...it was made to look evil by the christian faith to make the people they were FORCEING to become christian not follow the old ways at all ... in many ways the old ways are still here look at a number of christian and cathlic habits , and you will see alot of old ways ... the cathlic and christian church changed the named of gods and suck and turned a number into saints and a bunch in to deamons and devils i wish people would do their homeowrk on this before talking about it . romens had a festival this time of year also , so did teh greeks and the amarican indians , i do not see how a harvest festival and remebering those that are not here to enjoy all the fun is evil do you ?

Excuse me!? I'm sorry, you are SADLY mistaken. Here's your answer: People like little miss aerith5 over here. From what I know, Halloween was called All Hallow's Eve, or something like that, and was the Celtic New Year's Eve. Also, as for the dressing up part of it, people disguised themselves as spirits so the evil spirits wouldn't harm them, and people handed out treats to make the spirits go away. Because the Christians or Catholics or whatever were just OH SO PICKY that everyone had to be in THEIR religion, that they thought of ways to make it seem like every other religion's holiday's were evil and invovled worshipping the devil. It's also because of them, we barely know ANYTHING about the Mayans and such. Because THEY burned all the Mayans texts!

Pre-christian it was called all hallows eve and Samhain, commonly
pronounced "sow-enn" (sow rhyming with cow) is said to mean
"summer's end" and is one of
eight pagan sabbats, or holidays. It is often considered the most
important date in the pagan calendar, and it marks the beginning
of the spiritual year, it's usually celebrated on or near the evening
of OCT-31. It was originally a celebration of the final harvest of the
growing season among the ancient Celts. It was also their new year
celebration. On this day pagans honor their ancestors and people they
have lost. At the same time, they look ahead with renewed spirit
for the coming year.
Contrary to popular stereotypes and misconceptions,
modern pagans do not worship the devil, cast "evil" spells, or practice
animal sacrifice. The celebrations for Samhain
are as individualistic as pagans themselves.
Activities range from solitary, reflective walks in the woods,
to ancestor rituals, to community feasts,
some also hand out candy as if it where a gift to there ancestors.
the time of Halloween is a major Sabbat and a celebration for everyone,
it is not harmful, and has nothing to do with the devil.

Hope that Helps
and to each his own
Halloween is great regardless!

Actually it's not evil at all no one really knows where Halloween came from , but this is what I've been told:

The real holiday that ossociates with Hallowenn long ago actually took palce on November 1st and it was called Saints day [not evil at all] and people wanted to start talking to the saints so the night before they would do stuff which brought up the wiggi boards [spelling wronge] years later it lead up to people dressing up and going out for a gift whcih lead to trick or treating.

Well since Halloween is the one day a year spirits can come back to earth after crossing over I guess people that are afraid of ghosts think that the ghosts from hell come back and will hurt them which they think makes Halloween evil.

Actually Halloween came from the holiday All Hallows Eve. It was celebrated on October 31st by having a huge ball that people wore masks to. There were acrobats above everyone's heads. There were jugglers and all kinds of things like that.
